If you hadn't said it I almost certainly would have; I love those games.

A couple other random ones:

- Jagged Alliance 2: The best turn-based strategy game I've played, and with tons of personality to boot. I have to admit, though, that the learning curve for this game is quite steep; it's not for everyone.

- Papers, Please (see avatar): I didn't think it was possible to turn bureaucracy into a satisfying game mechanic, but this game proved me completely wrong.

- The Curse of Monkey Island: The best example I know of for how you do comedy writing in a video game.

- Ninja Gaiden II (NES): The Ninja Gaiden series pioneered the 'cinematic style' we see in so many modern games; the cutscene/fighting format of the series persists basically unchanged in most any AAA title you'll find. II is my favorite of the series.

Plenty of games can be recommended, but the one game I feel needs to be played by every gamer at least once is The Last of Us. Simply a brilliance in storytelling, gameplay mechanics and setting just take this game experience to a whole other level. The emotions and thoughts that one gets when playing this game just have to be experienced to be understood.

Personally I didn't like it at some parts.

At other parts I saw a lot of missed potential.

And at a few parts I felt like turning off the PS4.

But I'm aware I'm in the minority with that opinion.

It's a game about a mass-murdering lunatic swallowing all the inhabitants of Dreamland.

And people had a problem with Hatred.

*Red dead redemption*

Will sell soul for PC remaster.

Seriously.

Rockstar plz

After the great Walrus Wars of the 22nd century, Rockstar will give us a sloppy port.

That is probably one of the last games I would put on such a list, I don't think the game is horrible and it certainly has high production values but it is nothing special in terms of both gameplay and story. I do get quite sick of hearing about how brilliant and emotional the game is because a child we barely got to know dies at the start of the game and the main character starts sobbing uncontrollably at the loss of their child, of course this is going to strike a nerve with most people who aren't psychopaths (especially parents) but it is also an incredibly cheap and shallow way to illicit emotion from the player, it is the equivalent of what the fart joke is to comedy or the jump scare is to horror, and if you are anything like me and see through the ruse and see exactly what the developer is trying to do it just looks extremely pathetic. Besides I never found Ellie making fart noises in an attempt to whistle to be all that endearing either.

Gameplay is nothing to write home about either, highly polished maybe but not much beyond your standard cover based shooter, take cover and shoot back at the enemy when they aren't shooting at you, stealth never really moves beyond the basic elements of stealth based games which is throw item to cause distraction and sneak past when enemy investigates. Basically gameplay boils down to a bunch of linear set pieces not unlike the Uncharted series with the occasional semi-open area you can scrounge for supplies in.

While I don't think The Last of Us is a horrible game I have come to resent it due to the pretentiousness of it that draws out the pretentious hipster fanbase who will attach themselves to any game they think liking makes them look cool and cultured, they did the exact same thing when Heavy Rain was announced and now that they all moved onto the Last of Us the game and it's producer are widely regarded as a joke, what will happen to the Last of Us when the next pretentious game comes along?
