I noticed surviveability in this game is pretty low.  For an archer it's absolutely horrible.  My reaver stands a better chance obviously, but it's still pretty hard to survive until I gear up a bit better.

But archers all around just suck.  They have certain situations where they seem to do a lot of damage but there's also a lot of situations where it seems I can't get many kills (final hits) and I get hit once or twice and I'm dead.

Is there any way to make this class not suck?  I've prestiged three times and I can't seem to find good jewelry/armor upgrades but there has to be a way.  I mean, it's getting painful to play this class at this point.

It's a matter of gear and promotions. The archer gets very awesome. Also, upgraded armor helps a lot with survivability. I recommend you get that before you dismiss him completely.

How many promotions?  I can level up easy enough but after a while I'm going to need to farm higher level dungeons for better gear.

The higher tier armor upgrades are mostly extra damage though.  Which would also come in handy.

I doubt it's my build, since I have looked up builds for the archer and this one makes the most sense.

Well he's a damage class so a lot depends on the weapon you have

He used to be very good sniper but then they nerved Longshot (replaced it with Fulldraw, but that feels very awkward for a beginner I think)

Either way you can use Opportunity Knocks to leech of of more powerful players

The promotions are less important than the gear. HoK and a decent bow should help you stay alive and do more damage. Again though, the upgraded armor makes you take 100 less damage per hit, so it's kinda important. And I don't mean armor upgrades, I mean the craftable armor.

My promotions are fairly low, and I've been able to survive Perilous matches with just decent (but not spectacular) gear and only 2% HoK (I have better now though...). I find that caltrops at choke-points very helpful, kiting (a lot), and staying close to your barrier dispenser (provided they're not right out in the open). A lot of it is just positioning, keeping near cover so you're not being targeted by 6 archers yourself and use those caltrops so that you stall those melee guys.

For me archer is the weakest class for pugging nightmare and he makes Necromancer look tanky by comparison. Archer relies on getting killing blows to regen stamina to continue doing damage. I've seen some pretty good archers but overall archer is the biggest noob magnet. To survive as an archer you need to have a good team that can do damage, so that means you play with reavers and players you know are overgeared/overpromoted. I would suggest you try to avoid playing archer if you see a lobby full of tanky characters like legos and arcane mages because they will never get agro from you and you will die after a couple Longshots and then you will have to watch them whack at it for 45 minutes.

I actually prefer Hunter over Archer for nightmare because at least he can survive due to stealth.

Oh, I see.  I already have that on both reaver and archer but they still get killed pretty fast.

Longshot, longshot, longshot. That is the Archers money, use it in combo with opportunity knocks and LeapingShot and he is very deadly

If you have low cunning I would try this: http://da-skills.net...0,011,00100,000

You can switch out caltrops with Mark of Death to kill the bigger guys faster. Now as with other classes gear is important, very important. A high damage bow of course, if you have it. Leaping Shot for when enemies get close to you, longshot from a distance and just rinse and repeat. You can use ES to stagger and knockdown, caltrops to slow at chokepoints. Try to stay in the back and you should do fine

Is hunter better?  I like archer's damage but sometimes it just doesn't seem like enough for the amount of damage he takes from all sources.

The only reason I don't pick a rogue class (which they all seem 100x more powerful than archers) is because I absolutely hate rogues no matter what the game.

If you're just starting out, most classes will be challenging till you get better weapons, craft better armor, get better accessories, and a stock of potions, all which take time to gain. The more you play, and promote the characters, the easier the game gets. It's a slow progression of playing, buying, salvaging, crafting, rinse and repeat.

The archer is one of the funnest characters to play IMO.The build in ThatBruYouDK's post is similar to how I spec him,I would suggest taking Mark of Death also for some bonus damage.

Also, what bow are you using, and what level is it?If it's not a very high level bow then I see where it could get pretty frustrating quickly.

Whatever class you play you have to manage the enemy aggro. If your a tanky character like Lego then you can charge in to the middle of the fight. If your character is squishy then make sure your not that guy. Biggest problem I see with new archers is they run to the front and do a longshot hitting a lot of enemies, generating a lot of aggro and trying to survive by running, dying constantly. As a arch stay in the back and wait no matter how tempting until that Katari or Lego starts the fight and draws enemy aggro. Then you can start shooting and all the enemies will not converge on you. Once you see the enemies coming to you focus on them and use caltrops, also circle as you shoot if your in melee range and can't run away, keeping the enemy in your caltrops. They will take continuous damage and will hit you less as long as your moving. The Hunter can use stealth and loose aggro. Remember when you shoot and hurt the enemy then they will come after you unless they are targeting someone else. SO use this to your advantage and also try to find bows with heal on hit (HoH) like the bow of cruel redemption. It helps a lot in the beginning. HoK only works if you kill.

Biggest learning curve for archer is how to handle aggro because you will have all the mobs beeline for you. Can you stand your ground and kill off advancing mobs? Or will you have to retreat and channel mobs through LoS? You have to be aware of what you can handle and what tools fit the situation and that comes with experience.

Oh, and spike trap is wonderful and underused.

I would suggest playing as a ranged archer until you acquire a better bow.Buying the 2k chests will probably be your best bet at getting one.Once you have a bow with around 150 base damage like the Griffon,Punched by the maker, cruel redemption...you'll end up tanking with him,and having fun.Higher equipment is crucial for stepping up to higher levels.

my build is very similar except I use perceptive instead of flanking fire and dance of death instead of looked like it hurt.

oh trust me lol I've been looking.  I don't buy 2k chests until I have about 10k+ gold then I spam them chests all day.  I keep getting baller axes and daggers but nothing else really.

What about  my build?  Should I switch it up to what the other guy said or can I make this work?  I don't like the idea of flanking fire much because I'm not always behind someone.

The description of flanking fire indicates that you have to be directly behind the enemy to get the boost, but this is not so. It boosts your damage with at all angles except for directly in front of the enemy. Basically as long as they aren't looking at you, you get the damage boost. Also I recommend getting both Looked like it Hurt and Dance of Death, though priority goes to the former. Get your crit chance as high as you can with passives, gear and cunning promotions, and the archer can shoot all day.

Should I create weapon upgrades that have health per kill or leave that to just the rings?

If you don't yet have a heal on kill ring or an excellent bow, it's probably best to follow your strongest weapon.   Use your best tools->Class in order to farm as many matches as possible and open tons of chests.  Eventually you should end up dropping the nuts for another class and then you have genuine options ....

Get the heartstring bow( 1%HoH and 22%HoK), craft a grip with a lot of crit chance, and get the opportunity knocks passive. Spam long shot, and leaping shot when the enemy is near.

I'm loving this bow with long shot and superb crit damage rings.

Another build worth trying is the 3 Shots + Evade.
Without all the great gear Evade gives you high manueverabilty to get out of trouble. Don't bother with upgrade, and go and get Easy to Miss. That'll get you LLIT so don't bother with DoD.
Now I'm not saying this build is elite but it is an alternative you might find suits your current situation.
