My promotions are fairly low, and I've been able to survive Perilous matches with just decent (but not spectacular) gear and only 2% HoK (I have better now though...). I find that caltrops at choke-points very helpful, kiting (a lot), and staying close to your barrier dispenser (provided they're not right out in the open). A lot of it is just positioning, keeping near cover so you're not being targeted by 6 archers yourself and use those caltrops so that you stall those melee guys.
Or stand behind your tank so they get all the aggro but not you ![]()

Whatever class you play you have to manage the enemy aggro. If your a tanky character like Lego then you can charge in to the middle of the fight. If your character is squishy then make sure your not that guy. Biggest problem I see with new archers is they run to the front and do a longshot hitting a lot of enemies, generating a lot of aggro and trying to survive by running, dying constantly. As a arch stay in the back and wait no matter how tempting until that Katari or Lego starts the fight and draws enemy aggro. Then you can start shooting and all the enemies will not converge on you. Once you see the enemies coming to you focus on them and use caltrops, also circle as you shoot if your in melee range and can't run away, keeping the enemy in your caltrops. They will take continuous damage and will hit you less as long as your moving. The Hunter can use stealth and loose aggro. Remember when you shoot and hurt the enemy then they will come after you unless they are targeting someone else. SO use this to your advantage and also try to find bows with heal on hit (HoH) like the bow of cruel redemption. It helps a lot in the beginning. HoK only works if you kill.
^^^Golden advices right here.
Archer is big aggro magnet. With strong bow you might be able to take enemies down before they reach you, but if you have something weaker, they will get to melee range and surround you quite easily.
You will really benefit from staying behind as much as possible, not only you are unlikely to be the person who opens the fight, but the more distance between you and enemies, the more time to react, to kill them or to retreat.
If you have leaping shot, save it for enemies that will make it to you, no reason to waste it on something that is afar.
You just really have to pay attention to what´s coming on you. Especially shadows and assassins like to pick archers and when you are shooting from distance you might fail to notice they were in the group you just attacked, while they are already cloaked and on the way.
Once you have good Hok and good bow, it will get much better.
If you are caught in elemental Dot(fire or lightning), you are just screwed :-D

I just added KO /bomb for the first time with this Promote.
It seems to be unavailable for a lot of the time? No cooldown timer filling up, plenty stamina and yet can't throw it?
What am I missing? Ended up in the fade twice last night when I was expecting it to save me on W5 just standing there pressing the damn button with nothing happening (I was hosting too)

Archer abilities have the nasty habit of locking up sometimes. As far as I can tell it has something to do with getting interrupted during the animation. They will lock up for 5-6 seconds unless you use another ability.
This is usually a death sentence for me when my Leaping Shot locks up while three Terrors play pinball with me.

I can relate to OP, so far I've gotten real crap drops with regard to bows. Granted I've only been playing about a month now, but I'm struggling pretty hard with the Archer (and to a lesser extent the Hunter, but only because Stealth.) I'm up to 284 Prestige, and have started grinding the promotions in earnest just recently. The bow is Bow of Cruel Redeption (Rare/177dps/+9 Crit Chance/+27 Crit Dam. Bonus/1% HoH.) Not the worst in the world, but far from playing with the big boys.
I've dropped somewhere north of 150K gold on chests, and this is the best I've gotten so far. Are better bows strictly gotten from match drops or have I been the RNG's little bish? I've been hard pressed to get my hands on decent bows or one-handers. Daggers I've been lucky on (Silkdart and Tongue of Serpents), greatsword (Starfang) and staff (Yavanalis). I do have my Jade Ham, and that's just pure awesome. ![]()
Archer is using Caltrops/Leaping Shot/ES/Evade. Caltrops are great for choke points/threshold control, and I've gotten decent at timing my Evades (have actually had Red Lyrium Commanders do their "Pounce O' Death" at my "Hidden Step" shadow after I leapt, which I found endlessly amusing.) And being an old school MMO player, I've done good at aggro management. There's a few things that are the bane of my existence, like those little stealthing shank bastages that can send me from full to dead almost immediately. Long Shot was okay, but wasn't quite working for me in my rotation, although from reading the above I may have to reassess my position on that.
I suspect I need a lot more HoK/HoH than I have, which isn't a lot at this point. Any other tips (especially about getting my hands on better weapons) are most welcome. Thanks. ![]()

284? Wow I'm going to need a prestige party. I'm at....8....
I've been splitting them up. Going to do 5 on archer, 5 mage, 5 reaver to cover all my bases.

Ah, we may be talking two different things here. Prestige is the "score" you see when you pull up the leaderboards. Not sure with all the XP glitches I've heard about whether it's an accurate gauge of anything anymore. Promotions, where you essentially "reset" your agent and get a point in one of the three abilities, is another animal altogether. And I'm about on par with you...only done 6 myself so far, but I'm poised for doing a bunch soon (have about 5 or 6 agents at or near 20.)

Dude, play Keeper (w/barrier) until you farm better gear. (If possible farm perilous for gold/items)
It is almost a running joke to see an archer, with beginner armor and a bad bow, in the fade by the end of act 1.
Archers is one of the best classes by far with proper gear:

Auch!

Remark: Mark of Death must have run out on those screenshots

1 good Lego and you can Archer all day long....
1 good Lego and 2 Archer 1 Duelist(or another Archer) enemies won't survive long enough to gank you.

Unlike other archer abilities, Knockout Bomb will not override your auto-attack. You need to stop attacking for a second before throwing your bomb. It's probably just easier to use Knockout Bomb after using another ability.
I have also found that not using Longshot (since it isn't even that great anymore) greatly increases survivability due to far less aggro being drawn, and it frees up another ring slot.

This is not a bug. You have to wait for your shooting animation to end before you can use KO and there are several frames at the tail end of shooting that seem like you are doing nothing. Ever get frustrated that it takes you a half second to move after auto-attack? Same issue.
Basically, you need to remember to pause (cease attacking) just before you want to use KO otherwise it will be greyed out. KO won't animation cancel like some other skills (spike trap).
damn- ninja'd again.

Well key to the archers leaping shot damage is :
- Cheapshot, sunder targets armor
- Pincushion, 5% extra damage/hit for 10 secs
- Looked like it hurt, 10 stamina from critt
- "Mighty offence potion"
So basicly with each leaping shot: Removes armor, Increases damage, restores stamina
My build is for dragon hunting (it is not the best for survival). Other builds here may be much more useful for you, since I got a 100% critical chance.

I have had great fun and success with 'Evade' or 'Knockout Bomb' builds as others have already mentioned for survivability, there is some great tips in this topic from other users. Just experiment around and try a lot of builds, since builds need to be tailored for your promotions and gear. Don't worry if you do not like a new build...... you will be promoting soon enough. ![]()

Is there any way to make this class not suck? I've prestiged three times and I can't seem to find good jewelry/armor upgrades but there has to be a way. I mean, it's getting painful to play this class at this point.
Get a good weapon.
Get the best armor.
Get HoK (from ring, grip, or weapon property) and/or HoH (weapon property).
Get the right abilities.
The higher tier armor upgrades are mostly extra damage though. Which would also come in handy.
I doubt it's my build, since I have looked up builds for the archer and this one makes the most sense.
Upgraded armor doesn't up your damage at all, it reduces the physical damage you take. Armor upgrades come in mostly *defensive* varieties, though some are a mix of offense and defense.
What exactly is your build? Just because you think it makes the most sense doesn't mean it's actually good.
I would suggest playing as a ranged archer until you acquire a better bow.
His bow is fine for Threatening/Perilous. Not the best, but more than adequate.
What about my build? Should I switch it up to what the other guy said or can I make this work? I don't like the idea of flanking fire much because I'm not always behind someone.
If you have Caltrops in your build at max level then that worries me. Mark of Death is godly. Something like Evade or Fallback Plan can be used if you're having severe survival problems.

Finally got a purple bow that doesn't suck so hard. "Longbow of the Griffon" Lvl 21, 147dam, +11%AP, +42%Atk, Fires 3 shots when attacking. With a Master rune in it, it's up to 184dps, I can get 194 with a Supreme, which I may do. Sadly no slot for a grip, but it appears most (if not all) purples lack slots.
I do miss my paltry 1% HoH with my other bow, so I'll have to be a bit more careful until I can score a ring or better armor. The new bow hits quite a bit harder it seems. Plus the BQ ("Badassery Quotient") on the model is right up there. My first time out with it I managed to score a streak in the mid-30's, so it seems to work.
So I'm slightly less discouraged now with my bow agents. ![]()

Except those demons ganking you then stunlocking you if you are not careful ![]()
I run NM with Explosive Shot, Long Shot, Leaping Shot, Mark of Death, Hakkon Bow and 100% Base Critical Hit Rate. I confess I haven't been in a group of 4 archers. 3 was the most. (Reaver is still more fun though up close and personal)
That reminds me.....I see everyone with the damned 2h .....and it just won't drop for me.
