i got to say, i enjoy the planet scanning! i don't get why all of you are hating.

Maybe because we want to play a game and not fall asleep. Maybe because we want action and not move a circular texture over a 3D globe. Maybe because we thirst for the story and not for the launching of probes.

Just sayin'..

I literally just fell asleep twice trying to thoroughly scan one planet for resources. Could that stupid scanner reticule move any slower? :crying:

out of all of the complaints, this is the only one I 100% agree with. The PC version one is much faster, but I almost passed out when I seen how slow it moves on the 360. I feel sorry for the 360 only owners. It is torture.

But maybe they can fix it with updates...

i can see some of your point... I found one planet that i shot 20+ probes into and it still said its resources where "good"

I just started and i have almost fille my meters for all the resources!

I remember finishing ME1 with max credits and nothing to buy... it seems they "fixed" this problem by giving you all sorts of stuff to spend money on...

not the most elagent fix, but i like collecting stuff :) space hamster FTW!

I like the scanning too. I didn't think I would like it at first because I actually liked driving the mako to look for minerals and was sad to see that feature removed. As many above me have said, the scanning is abysmal until you upgrade so do it immediately.

I'm letting my son do the planet scanning, since he's not allowed (too young) to watch the rest of the game play.

Ya gotts to learn to delegate.

:)

Heh-heh! I thought that the ship AI could do the scanning quickly and easily, but child labour is always the most economical way.

It's just good husbandry. (+4 renegade points)

Here is a easy was I learned how to scan planets.

1.) Get Miranda upgrade for the ship. (( Need to talk to her ))

2.) Now when scanning the planets use both thumbsticks pointing right to get to the right side of the planet.

3.) Use the left trigger and keep tapping it, don't hold on to it, and when you see a spike use the right trigger.

Heh the Scanning doesn't become nearly as painful once you get the hang of it and learn to prioritize instead of strip minning every single planet you found, its still a bit dull, but I had worst

But I think it would have been greatly improved if there was some colour mark after you scanned the place

I don't have a problem with it. I like it better than driving a make over 20 hedged mountain rocks for 5 minutes.

A good tip is also to outright ignore any nodes with a 2-3 square signal for a single ore type (it's not worth the probe) and always aim for the larger veins. An exception to this would be element zero, since it can only be found on specific planets. The problem with scanning isn't only the fact that it can become tedious for some people (you have to consider the fact that you have to go through it on more or less, every playthrough) , it's also a worthless feature once you have procured more than ~200k for any ore type (this is where you wish you could sell the ore), since you won't be spending that much overall and to the best of my knowledge there is no achievement tied to it. I'm going to be the first to criticize the mako, the repetitive landscale on certain planets and the 90 degree slopes, but I do not feel that scanning was the answer to the issue. Introducing a hybridized system or even improving on the initial one, might actually feel less tedious and provide a feeling that you are actually doing something that has some degree of substance and not just being forced into it for the sake of upgrades.

Is there anything in the description of the planet that gives away what resource the planet has the most of or consists of? I don't have my console in front of me or I'd check.

My strategy is to rapidly pull the left trigger while I move around. It speeds it up enough for me.

THIS. Guys, if you're dragging the scanner around, you're doing it wrong. It should take 5-10 minutes TOPs per planet. It takes me 3 minutes sometimes to deplete one.

Well there hint from time to time, some planet are refer to has being mine for its element (thought you can find some of the other element), but its not really a common feature

OMG ARE YOU PEOPLE SERIOUS.. sorry, had to caps.

*Don't* drag the scanner, TAP it for a short time (1-2 seconds tops) and read the mineral scanner info. If you people are spending hours on a this minigame, again, you're doing it wrong.

its fun. dont hold the scanner down, just press it quickly while moving. if you see a reading or feel a shake, slow down and now hold the scanner on.

Yup. I have my 360 connected to my computer so I play music while I take 10-15 minutes to scan a solar system :) It's a nice break.

I only did one planet dragging the scanner around until I realized how to really so it, so it's not like I wasn't dense as well :P

Need moar Ezzo.

I've only toyed with the scanning. It's not bad, but what I really wish was that they'd give us a vehicle that managed to be both bouncy and sticky so we could drive across the impossibly jagged and cliff-filled surface doing the scanning by hand.

(end sarcasm)

The Scanning speed does not increase with the scanner upgrade you simply get more resources from scanning which make you need to scan less, however imo the scan speed is far to slow and covering a planet can take up to fifteen minutes where on the pc version, all i had to was increase the sensitivity of my mouse all the way up and i was able to whole planets in 30 secs avg by quick scanning and going back whenever i see a major spike, increase the speed by about five to ten times because it takes far too long to scan a planet.

I just scan in an area and move on to the other side of the planet.

and to answer the above posts, sry for dbl post, but skip-scanning is a technique for doing it faster but will fail on some planets because the spikes on these planets are in an incredibally small area and by not holding it down you will miss these grail spikes, the people who holding aren't doing it wrong just because they don't it like you, they are actually scanning a planet, in the spirit of the how it works, where you guys are playing blackjack with the scanners and hoping to win big, these can be described as a tortoise and hare approach, both have advan. and disadvan. and neither are "wrong."

That's the only reason I got the guide... to limit the amount of planet gathering time I'd have to spend.

On a related issue, does the scanner upgrade actually do anything for PC users? The scanner speed is pretty much determined by sensitivity in the PC version anyway.

That's exactly what I did in Mass Effect 1.  I saved all the mining crap till the end then did all the planets in a nightmarish 10 hour OCD-fest.  Thank god for the custom soundtrack feature.  Now if they would only make Last.FM work in-game, it would be the perfect solution to combating RPG fetch quest busy-work like this.
