Is there anything in the description of the planet that gives away what resource the planet has the most of or consists of? I don't have my console in front of me or I'd check.

The guide has a section dedicated to this.  As I said earlier, that's why you get the guide for this game... to minimize farming.

I have to say I really miss exploring the different terrains of planets. Yeah the mako thing really kind of sucked and drove very annoyingly.. But if they could have fixed that .. or maybe have you scan the planet from space then drop down in a drop ship to a few smaller, explorable areas or something.

In theory, I assume I'm going to like this sort of mini-game. Time is not a factor for me when I play a game. Perfectly willing to do everything, even if it takes 100+ hours of insane boredom and only five hours of hellaciously awesome action.

I actually like scanning less than I liked the Mako. Though I think my annoyance with the whole scanning process would be greatly mitigated if there were some sort of fog of war mechanic to let you know where you had already scanned. I'm kind of OCD about these things, and the idea that some tiny speck of planet went unscanned drives me nuts.

On a related issue, does the scanner upgrade actually do anything for PC users? The scanner speed is pretty much determined by sensitivity in the PC version anyway.

Sounds like you get more resources per scan, so you wouldn't have to speed as much time on a planet. So pretty much, you get more resources for the same amount of time it already takes, since it doesn't take that long anyway. I'm glad I have on the fly sensitivity on my MX518, crank it up for planet scanning, and then lower it for the game. Now if only I could figure out a macro to make the document switch button the scan action. Then I wouldn't have to do anything but move the mouse and left click.

I just remember that video interview with Casey Hudson describing how you rotate a planet and "tease out" resources and anomalies. He made it sound so interesting.

In reality, it sucks, is boring and takes no skill... just wastes your time. Why did they leave a broken and unfun mechanic in the game? Development leadership of this game was poor. Art direction was fantastic though.

The Scanning speed does not increase with the scanner upgrade you simply get more resources from scanning which make you need to scan less, however imo the scan speed is far to slow and covering a planet can take up to fifteen minutes where on the pc version, all i had to was increase the sensitivity of my mouse all the way up and i was able to whole planets in 30 secs avg by quick scanning and going back whenever i see a major spike, increase the speed by about five to ten times because it takes far too long to scan a planet.

Actually, the scanner upgrade dramatically increases the speed of the scanner on the 360.  If you don't notice it, then you are definitely not scanning thoroughly.  Top to bottom without it, maybe 20 seconds while holding scan.  Top to bottom WITH it, probably about 7 seconds while holding scan.  (a comparison based on what I have observed while comparing my wife's save to mine, not timed exactly)

The scanner upgrade is wuite helpful but ive got ocd and must check every gd square on a planet if im going to scan it. I honestly would have prefered an option to automate the scanning like it takes 5 minute to scan the whole planet or something at least that way I could do something else.

scaning is good in principle, but in practice...boring. Planets have too many resources, and theres not enough probes, 20 probes on one planet? You almost have to go fill up your probes after every planet, maybe every two planets, very tedious since you have to go all the way back to the fuel depot. your scanner moves toooooo slow, even after upgrading, terrible.

you know what i hate? how the scanner will say "depleted" there will STILL be like ten scans left. after doing only like five planets im sick to death of it. the real kicker is thats you almost HAve to do them. at least in ME1 you could just skip them with no problem.

It's annoying, but hey, I will take this over randomly driving around in the Mako until I find a random, un-marked mineral vein on my map. At least when scanning a planet you don't have to climb nearly 90 degrees up a mountain to get the minerals :)

Also note that you don't need to strip anywhere close to every planet. You only need x amount of resource y to get every upgrade in the game. I dedicated a relatively small amount of time to doing nothing but scanning in the beginning of the game, right after Omega, and then never scanned again for the rest of the game. If you wanted to spread the scanning out, scan only the rich planets and stop after rich turns to good or moderate. I think Bioware made a great decision in having a ridiculously overabundant amount of resources available.

Scanning is better than Mako but...

Less boring is still boring.

I'm not sure if this was already answered, but what is the significance of the meters corresponding to each mineral when you're in scanning mode? They don't make any sense to me, because even though my Iridium meter is maxed out, the number will still go up when I harvest additional Iridium. Anyone know what the deal is with the meters?  Are those your overall quantities of the minerals, or do they change on a planet-by-planet basis?   If they're overall quantities, why can I continue to harvest additional, say, Iridium, when the meter is maxed out?

My best guess is that it's the amount of resources on the planet, but that doesn't make much sense, because you would think the bar would go down, not up when you mine it.

I actually really like the minigame.  Of course I'm playing on the PC and the scanner moves as fast as I will it.  Honestly the annoying part is the limited probes, not the minigame itself.

The PC versions scanning speed is based on the actual sensitivity of your mouse because I played with 200 dpi and scanned with 3200 dpi and scanning at that level took secs not minutes

I really liked driving the Mako. It was very easy once you figured out the controls and how to plot your course with the mini-map. The best part was that I really got the feeling that I was exploring strange planets and discovering things.

I really can't believe that Bioware replaced the whole exploration part of Mass Effect with planet scanning. It's a major step down.

It's to gauge your resources so when you have only 1k or 2k, it's be near empty. But once you get beyond 25k the graphic is full and remains full even though you can continue to get more resources.

If your idea of fun is vacuuming or mowing your lawn, you will love scanning for planet resources. It's not a mini-game, it's a chore. There's absolutely nothing fun about it.

Sorry, I disagree... Scanning is much more fun than the Mako as far as finding minerals goes.
