I don't get it. It happens every time. Fans all act as lemmings proclaiming games that aren't out yet as greatest games of the year. Happens every bloody time. How on earth can Fallout 4 be any good, when it's not out yet and no one has played it?

Wait for the game to come out. Plus it's a Bethesda game, odds are that it will be full of bugs.

*shrug*

Well, with XCOM, if they keep half of the original and improve on the rest, they're bound to be a solid contender.

I've never played any in the series, but from what I saw in Let's Plays of MGS: Ground Zeroes, it's just your regular stealth action game.

Why are people nerdgasming about this franchise?

Ground Zeroes was just a small taste with a very limited arsenal of weapons, gadgets and tricks that will be in Phantom Pain, to be honest I was a little disappointed with the lack of equipment choices in Ground Zeroes that limited tactical flexibility as well, if it was supposed to be a demo to Phantom Pain then I believe more should have been done to sell this angle, but that being said Phantom Pain does look to be delivering that and more, besides the gameplay in Ground Zeroes was extremely tight and well polished and despite the limited equipment options there was still more than a few ways to complete the mission and accomplish your goals.

From what we have seen Phantom Pain does look like it could be quite good, looks like it could potentially knock Witcher 3 off it's perch which would be quite a feat considering how rare it is to see a game of it's caliber let alone 2 in the same year.

Does it have something special about it? I mean, it obviously has to, to have such a fanbase, but I have no idea what so far.

The storytelling is incredibly complex and intricate, it touches on a lot of interesting subjects, as it discusses philosophy, nuclear war, the information age we live in, asking questions like "How much is a human being defined by its genes?" where in the sequel it asks "How much is a human being defined by information/by history?", in regards to the overall themes that drives each entry of the game. They are all tied together in that they each carry a similar message about 'passing information, genes, things that define you, on to the next generation' while delving into discussions on nuclear war with a vaguely anti-war outlook.
They all carry a seemingly implicit parallels to Nietzsche's philosophy, here and there, specifically "The Eternal Return of the Same".

Looking passed the engaging story, the gameplay is excellent and it's the small details that strengthens it; You can find so many details, both in optional codex conversations about the story, or all the gadgets you have at your exposal to infiltrate enemy bases can be used in various ways. Sometimes you'll discover a gadget's use which you probably didn't use before, sometimes you'll find new items that can utilized in certain situations to escape them.

Metal Gear is unique on that whole front.

It has changed alot from game to game with MGS3 beeing the best of them gameplay wise.

Story, yes -- Gameplay? Not so much. The stealth is complex and well done but the overall controls, aiming, are definitely not the best. That awards goes to Peace Walker.

All in all, I'm not as big on the franchise as I used to be before Guns of the Patriots, but the Phantom Pain is starting to resemble Peace Walker in terms of gameplay which has dragged my interests back. The only other games (among the actual newly released ones I've played) I could see as contenders for my favorites of the year would probably be either that one, Bloodborne, Life is Strange or Her Story -- I've mostly been playing older games as always.

MGSVPP is likely the last Konami video game ever, who want's to bet it's going to be the most spectacular failure in a very long time, they fired everybody working on that game so that it can get pushed out without any quality control work done to it.

I expect it to have great gameplay as per usual by Metal Gear's standards but an empty sandbox that is going to get old and tiresome very fast like your average sandbox. Its story can't be worse than Peace Walker, hopefully better, as it is coming full circle with the events of Metal Gear 1 now.

I always found that Metal Gear was a bit cheesy, with an amazingly ham-fisted moral message to be quite honest. I don't hate the very fact that it exists like some people, but truly I never got what made it so popular.

I like it because it's so utterly batshit insane. The plot is stupid, the characters are stupid. the world is stupid and that's why I love it. Both the main series and the rising spinoff.

Why do you say that? The only game I feel was stupid was Guns of the Patriots.

Vampires, old men who heal via photosynthesis, everything involving psycho mantis. It makes no sense but that's what makes it fun.

Persona has High School children summoning demons by shooting themselves in the head, Mass Effect has floating jellyfish etc etc

Disregarding the weak explanation for Vamp's abilities, everything is explained within the game in detail -- It relates a bit to the discussion I had in regards to Metal Gear, revolving around the concept of "hyperrealism" mixing factual knowledge with that of fiction in such a way that they become indistinquisable from each other. I'll dig it up some other time -- I don't see how it makes the characters stupid, however, they are all generally well rounded and neatly characterized.

There's a difference between being quirky or stupid.

Fallout of those two easily... TW3 isn't even game of the year to this point.  It was good, but with a dull story, average combat, and lacking in character and interaction, it just wasn't great.  Batman is already above it and, if the next 4 chapters continue as the first, I'd put King's Quest above it easily.

My reaction when people call TW franchise the best thing ever.  Different tastes.  TW3 was good, but nothing special.  And I'd say Batman was only slightly better and still nothing special. Neither were Dragon Age level like last year.  Fallout is the clear front runner for this year's title.

Laugh all you want.  I loved the game, found the depth of lore to be outstanding, if too subtle for some to get, and the main quest story to be satisfying. Just because you didn't like DA, doesn't mean others didn't find it nearly on the level of Origins.

But the, given this childish gif response, don't know why I'm even bothering with people like you.

Having never played one of Bethesda's Fallout games, I can't really speak to their quality, but if they are anything like their other offerings, I don't think they should be given the same level of acclaim as the Witcher franchise, particularly Wild Hunt.

Crafting a large open-world isn't particularly challenging when it is bereft of narrative and memorable characters. Wild Hunt is larger than Skyrim and populated with engaging quests, a tight storyline, and hundreds of carefully crafted npc's with their own extensive backstory.

I would hazard a guess and say that Bethesda games reach a larger audience because the protagonists are always a blank canvas for the player to project themselves onto. With the Witcher franchise, you either dig Geralt or you don't.

At any rate, I don't think CDPR's games are as niche as they once were. Wild Hunt sold over 4,000,000 copies in its first two weeks, and its aggregate review scores are stellar.

Then don't mock just because someone doesn't find TW3 to be anywhere near DA level, even DA2's level.  It was a good game, but DA is just better in my opinion.  At least TW3 wasn't as average as the first two Witcher games. I still shake my head in wonder that people think those two games are the holy grails of gaming... even Dark Souls has a better claim and it doesn't have much of one at that.

I am sick to death of fans of CDPR/Witcher and their attitudes toward DA and other RPGs in general.

Jeebuz now it's worse than DA2? Wow. Anywhoo, TW3 has some disappointing faults, I won't deny that. But I was uninspired by Todd Howard's emphasis on customization in the FO4 demo. What Bethesda really needs to work on is rolepaying and narrative, not turning Fallout into a sims style game. I'm a big fan of Bethesda but they really need to shake things up.

DA2 is highly underrated in my opinion, especially since the DCL(specifically Legacy) revealed lore that helped to less Act 3's rushed and confusing "why is this happening" feeling.  The first two acts are amazing and the characters and the rivalry system were great.

Compare that with TW3: dragging main quest, lackluster antagonists, rushed and terrible climax sequence (final battle and post battle), characters that weren't as engaging, lackluster character interactions (more Kaer Morhen drinking scenes... that was amazing and shows that TW had potential they didn't fully reach), a rather rigid playstyle given Geralt is more or less a set character, and sidequests I didn't find as "amazing" as others did.  Now, Skellige I enjoyed, but Novigrad/Velen was just a long slog at times.

I'd give TW3 an 8/10 while DA2 gets an 8.5 from me.  I executed better for what I look for in a game: great characters, wonderful interactions with those characters, being able to alter those characters, and a lore that is still building and absolutely fascinating.

Again, some may like TW more, but it isn't an objective fact that it is a better game or franchise than DA.  If I had to choose one to lose forever, it isn't even a contest.  The Witcher never stood a chance in those regards.

Are some of you people insane? How can Fallout 4 be the best rpg of the year, when it's not bloody out yet?
