I've played the game a handful of times and possibly will do more.

What's been your favorite race/class/belief/romance combo?
I think mine probably was my mage dalish elf who believed in the old Gods, not andraste, who drank from the well as it was an elven temple and Morrigan can do one. Romanced and fell in love with Solas, was utterly heart broken when he left her.
Also liked my mage romance with Cullen, I think I played her as a fairly strong believer of Andraste - but it felt a bit out of place as she was a mage.

I've only done a male human mage with Cassandra. He has faith in the Maker, Andraste, and the Chant, but he is also a learned man of knowledge and wisdom. He requires proof of certain things. So he did not confirm or deny that he was saved by Andraste. He took a position of not knowing for sure either way. That is until after Here Lies they Abyss, in which case he told the world the truth of what happened. But in the end he still genuinely believed he was chosen by the Maker to stop Corypheus and repair the veil.

I haven't tried other romances with other characters, but of the ones I know about, I don't think they can quite compete with male human mage x Cassandra, especially since her attraction to a male human mage is canon.

i've had one male character who was an elf again, and romanced Dorian. I was flirting with Cass to start with though, I do love her. I've had too many mages though i'm not sure if I could play mage again. We will see.

My favourite character has been a human mage who favored a circle system that was fair on mages.

Having the arcane knowledge perk enriched this characters interaction within the game very very well.

He sided with the Templars, promoted Barris, romanced Cassandra and worked to put Vivienne on the throne.

Also believes in the Maker and uses his maker given powers to help those in need.

^Same here.

In my opinion, I think a male human mage fits the story best in terms of involvement with the events, romance, and storyline options. For example, when Jospehine asks about your parents there is an option in one of the following dialogue choices for the mage where you can then describe the Ostwick Circle and their templars. You can basically set the history of the Ostwick Circle playing as a mage.

Also, sentencing Erimond to tranquility, and Alexius too if you want. I think you need to be mage to tranquilize Erastenies too.

There are also mage specific options in convincing a certain mage in the Hinterlands to join the Inquisition, and Solas' personal quest has an option to say you studied a similar situation when you were at the circle.

I almost did that, but since there was no option to specify to Josephine that the templar I fancied was female, I chose to go with the "some turned to stone and watched". My mage also had scars on his face. A reflection that Ostwick's history wasn't always so spotless and dull. In fact it was quite sharp.

After 14 DAi playthroughs (or around that anyway) my favourite one was playing a female human mage who doesn't believe in any Gods at all.

- Female human mage

- Described Ostwick templars with distrust "they turned to stone, cold if a mage was being mistreated"

- She has a scar on her lip, which I headcanon as happening at the circle (she's rather sarcastic at times so I guess she sassed the wrong templar).

- Doesn't believe in the Maker (being a mage she feels the Chantry teaches that she's more animal then human), or any Gods at all really (spirits!)

- Dislikes and distrusts the chantry because of all its politics and power-grabbing.

- After all that she does train to be a knight enchanter due to preferring being in the thick of battle on the front lines.

- Romanced Cullen, but still disagreed with him about templars, the chantry, the Maker, even spirits.

- Enjoys being quite the flirt, luckily Cullen doesn't mind since he never mentions her flirtatious nature in-game so it obviously doesn't bother him at all. (I miss the jealousy chats so much! wish they hadn't stopped that)

- sees Dorian as her Soulmate and closest friend.

- very smart and skilled mage, knowledgeable in the arcane and always learning.

- Has connections to the shady underworld very early, even though it requires a perk I like to believe my sassy mage was breaking a lot of rules at the Ostwick Circle.

- Sided with the mages (ally), continually says mages should be free since you don't need magic to hurt an innocent and training can be done outside of the gilded mage prisons (Circles) just as easily and successfully as inside them (my Inky's thoughts, not mine)

- Recruited the grey wardens, and anyone (and everyone) that she could, "I'm always looking for new allies. Introduce me".

- Got to yell at Cory-pory "I don't believe in Gods!" when he mentions he thinks that she wants to be a God too.

- Loves the Avvar mages, and how their society handles magic and training.

ok, I'll stop there before I write an entire novel about it. But that's a little background to my favourite, and personal canon+headcanon, playthrough

So far, my favourite is my 'canon' dwarf rogue. She did not believe in the Maker - or much of anything else - and spent the first part of the game wishing she could run away. (She'd have tried, only she figured Cassandra and Leliana wouldn't let her get more than thirty feet.) Since she couldn't run away, she drank a lot, flirted with everyone, and picked the sarcastic response whenever there was one. It was like the snarky sidekick accidentally became the star of the story - which is, of course, exactly what happened. Her romance with Blackwall is also dear to my heart - I think it's the most fun when the Inquisitor undermines his attempts to put her on a pillar by cracking jokes and is in no moral position to judge him. I'm just itching to play my Cadash again when more DLC comes out.

So far my other Inquisitors have been 1) qunari mage who romanced Dorian and wasn't sure if he was the Herald or not 2) human warrior who believed she was chosen by Andraste and romanced Josie and 3) elf mage who believed in the Creators, drank from the well and romanced Solas. I enjoyed the qunari and the elf, but found the human pretty boring. I've still got four more characters planned, one for each race, so I can finish all the romances. (Although playing as a human was so dull that I'm wondering if should make another elf for Cullen instead. On the other hand, maybe being an ex-Circle mage will be more interesting?        )

I really only have done human mages with Cullen, mainly because of little comments in regards to the circles (both having lived in circles of course) and the chat in Haven about the circle mage's journey (male or female get this one I believe) I liked, even though my main character was rather snippy about it. I know a lot of people who prefer elf with him so it's more what you like playing I guess. Elf got one really sweet one-line from him just after first kiss but one line wasn't enough for me to prefer elf+Cullen more then Circle Mage+Cullen where I felt had a lovely little story going for it. You do tend to get a little more romance dialogue, or rather slightly different dialogue at times,  if playing a templar or a mage romancing him, other then that there isn't really any difference, and certainly it's only little bits of dialogue, nothing major so it doesn't really matter. Long-winded reply there, sorry.

tldr I personally preferred the circle mage Cullen romance. Though elf mage would be similar (just without the Circles chats) anyway.

I still have romances to unlock tiles for in the keep :( , only experienced 4 of them in 14 playthroughs which is.. rather sad.. I'm a creature of habit I guess :D. I would love to actually get past Skyhold playing a dwarf though. Also means I need to finish 4 more playthroughs, dedicated to different romances. ack! lol.

OH GOD I just noticed I used YOU'RE instead of  YOUR. I've just woken up...maker forgive me V_V grammar nazi's are coming.

Easy enough for you to edit, and I admit the misuse of 'your' made me click on the thread.

So my favorite is my canon Inquisitor: Dalish Archer believes in Elven Gods, did not like being called the Herald of Andraste, kept telling people he had no idea if he was Holy, just trying to get through the day. Made friends with all his companions, he's a charming guy, but no romance.

Mine is based on a dopey joke, essentially.

See, my Warden was a manipulative self-serving brute. (after discovering the enormous amount of friendly fire damage a mage could do, I decided that my main Warden would essentially be Palpatine  ), and since Hawke, who's also a mage given how mage-centric DA2's plot was, and male, since I prefer Nicholas Boulton's performance over Jo Wyatt's I also decided to make the Warden an elvish woman: that way she's both unrelated to Hawke and easily distinguishable from him (neither the same race nor gender).

Since I didn't want to roll "Sociopath mistaken for a Hero" twice in a row and the sarcastic script has by far the best lines I went for a snarky mage Hawke.

Then came Inquisition: after two members of oppressed communities (elvish mage and Apostate), I decided to roll a human rogue who's a devout (but not into showboating his piety in public: one Sebastian is enough) Andrastian who sincerely believes in Noblesse Oblige (and therefore went for the Archer/Assassin combination, because nothing says "honorable knight" like a guy who excels at murdering people from a safe distance).

And so, here's the joke:

The protagonists of the Dragon Age so far are The Good, the Snark and the Bully.

Told you it was a dopey joke.

I'm not even bothering to unlock all the tiles through the game. Keep is bugged enough to not register most of your choices.

So I just switched off spoilers.

Also liked my mage romance with Cullen, I think I played her as a fairly strong believer of Andraste - but it felt a bit out of place as she was a mage.

Nothing weird about that, I'd guess most Circle mages are Andrastian to some degree, since it's ruled by the Chantry. Even Andrastian mages can still be anti-Circle (see: Anders).

Anyway my canon: Female Lavellan who's the clan's First and is a big believer in the Dalish pantheon. She barely knew who Andraste was (aside from the historically freeing the elves thing) before the Conclave explosion, and butted heads with Solas often early on over her culture's validity. Long story short, things happen, blahblahblah, and by the end of Temple of Mythal (where she took the Well because lost ancient elven knowledge, and Abelas said Mythal had been murdered anyway like five minutes before that) her faith had been entirely destroyed. And then her maverick elf boyfriend broke things off when she was at her most vulnerable as a result of that crisis, and left for good at the very end in spite of promising things would be "made clear," leaving her with major trust issues. And the visual symbols of her former Dalish identity gone to boot.

It was great.

Human warrior, sword-and-board focused frontline leader with a broad education and workaholic tendencies exacerbated by a case of PTSD from the Conclave explosion and the fall of Haven. She's a devout, open-minded Andrastian who when in doubt will put serving the needs of the people first ... including, eventually and very reluctantly, accepting that they call her the Herald as a much-needed symbol of hope, though she does not encourage it. For her own part, she's terrified both of it being heresy and of it being true, because both implications are a tremendous burden on top of all her worldly responsibilities. In the end, she more or less came around to a view similar to the one expressed by people like Cassandra and Mother Giselle, i.e. "the Maker put you on this path for a reason". As an asexual, she finds strength and emotional fulfillment in deep platonic bonds, especially with Cassandra (who quickly became like a sister in all ways but blood) and Cole. The concept of an embodied spirit is as fascinating to her as his unfettered kindness is both humbling and endearing, and with his and Solas' help she learned a lot about the Fade and its creatures in ways she never expected. Her greatest fear is falling to corruption as so many other people, causes and organizations have.

I have a canon/favorite for each class.

Rogue: Female human DW assassin, Andrastian but not devout, romanced Cullen (quit lyrium), freed mages, Celene saved, Gaspard executed, Briala exiled, Florianne dead, Wardens allied with Inquisition, did rituals at Temple, let Morrigan drink from Well, hardened Leliana as Divine

Warrior: Female dwarf SnS champion, believes in the Stone/Ancestors, romanced Iron Bull (Tal-Vashoth), allied with Templars, Celene and Briala reunited, Gaspard executed, Florianne arrested, Wardens allied with Inquisition, skipped rituals at Temple, drank from Well, Cassandra as Divine

Mage: Female Qunari KE, agnostic, romanced Sera, freed mages, Celene saved, Gaspard exiled, no resolution for Briala was mentioned, Florianne arrested, Wardens allied with Inquisition, don't remember about the rituals at Temple, let Morrigan drink from Well, Cassandra as Divine

My fave is my first, a male Trevelyan KE who romanced Iron Bull. He's fine with being called The Herald of Andraste, although he does not believe he is.

He's ambitious, likes The Game, flirting with anything that moves, loves fine things, gets along with Josephine, likes to get as many allies as possible, let Morrigan drink from the Well because he thought it'd be too dangerous to drink himself without knowing what would happen.

The mages were his allies and he wanted them to be free! And would have liked for softened Leliana to be Divine, but she told him about his plans too late, so Cassandra was elected instead.
