Everyone probably has their favourite Dragon Age character whether it be a protagonist, companion, NPC, antagonist, MP character, novel character etc. But why do like this character?

Is it their ideology, personality, combat skills, attractiveness or something else? (I am not sure if there has been a similar topic before. I know there has been a "who is your favourite companion" thread but I have created this topic to focus on the reason for the favouritism)

I'll start off... my favourite character is Vivienne. The reason why is based on a number of contributing factors which includes:

  • Indira Varma's voice
  • An example of a Pro-Circle character and I tend to agree with most of her views.
  • Vivienne's banter (in particular with Iron Bull and Sera)
  • Stylish companion
  • I like her quirky speech mannerisms such as "my dear" and "darling".
  • I also like the fact that she isn't everyone's cup of tea :P

Morrigan would be a close second because of Claudia Black's voice

So who is your favourite character(s) in Dragon Age and why?

a vivienne lover?! I thought everyone hated her. ;)

I've got a couple for different reasons.

Solas because:

  • He has a seriously interesting back story
  • He has unique views on the fade and magic use, it's refreshing to get such new insights.
  • The romance, those kisses where he pulls away but then goes for it anyway. Oh I shouldn't but I should kind of thing.

Dorian because:

  • well he's damn hot for one.
  • That pure sass.
  • The romance and that repeatable kiss scene.
  • the fact that he stood up to his father!
  • and that style.

Oh ok if we're including origins and 2 then Alistair and Anders win hands down, out of all DAI characters too.

Alistair because

  • He's a clown and it amuses me.
  • He's so sweet and courts your warden.
  • i love it when he calls Morrigan a total ******.
  • He will not forgive that a-hole Loghain (and neither will I)

Anders because

  • He is hilarious in Awakening.
  • His back story is very interesting.
  • He's a complete rebel!
  • he is again a sweet romance.

I know a lot of people hate Anders but I love him and I wish he'd show up again...although I highly doubt that's likely as most players stabbed him.

From DAI my favorite is Cole.

I like to hear his comments. The things he says are very revealing, not just about others, but about life in Thedas in general. The voice actor is amazing too in showing emotions in a subtle way. Great backstory too.

Anders because

  • He is hilarious in Awakening.
  • His back story is very interesting.
  • He's a complete rebel!
  • he is again a sweet romance.

I know a lot of people hate Anders but I love him and I wish he'd show up again...

Same =( Anders is my all-time favourite, FML.

The Architect because:

-He looks creepy but badass.

-He kept his word on clearing the Deep Roads.

-He has a calmed personality regardless what's going on.

-He maybe is not so clever on planning, but he knows a big deal about the taint. (at least he didn't need a magic elven orb to stand on a fight).

-He is technically a living legend, alas with some amnesia.

Duke Prosper because:

-He knows Qunlat.

-He has the biggest Wyvern ever seen.

-He is affable at first, but his answers to sarcastic Hawke are great.

-He is clever and he fights well to be a noble.

-His beard :v

Yavana because:

-She is wise and powerful.

-She has the biggest Dragon ever seen.

-She is kind and unlike her sister and mother she doesn't need to use mocks or jokes.

-Her outfit and staff looks badass and she is already beauty.

-Her legends are really interesting and her nickname is really cool.

I know she's dead on most of worldstates, but Witches don't die that easy and she is unharmed on my worldstate, so, I hope see her again.

Alistair.

He's funny, he's a bro, he cares about people, he's dumb enough to make you laugh - but not dumb enough to make you facepalm, and he's a chill king if you make him one.

Anybody that hates on him is just jealous 'cause they've never licked a lamppost in winter.

All my favorite characters have one thing in common: they're sleazy d-bags. Mother Petrice, Gamlen, and Servis are all just self-serving assholes with little redeemable qualities. They're a blast to watch in action and I love how blunt and full of themselves they are.

Morrigan, Merrill, Leliana, Cassandra, Flemeth, Sera, Vivienne, Sten, Varric (DA2) Isabella, Josephine, Loghain, Cole, Shale, sarcastic femHawke...

What?

Only one?

Seriously?

*waits*

No, really... just one?

*waits some more*

Well, sh*t.

Okay.... Morrigan, because Claudia Black.

You need more than that? Her evolution as a character from the moment we encounter her in the Korcari Wilds, to the moment she helps in the fight against Corypheus.

Aw, don't pick on Carver, he's still what, a teenager? You know what Mark Twain said about teenagers and barrels. Give him a few years to grow up in the Wardens.

Josephine:

- A great example of a strong female character who doesn't need to fight to achieve her goals.
- Ideals normally match mine, even if she might try a bit too hard to keep everyone happy and sometimes is willing to questionable means to achieve her goals (ruining a marriage as an example).

- Insanely loyal to the Inquisitor and the Inquisition.

- Generally polite, tactful, hygienic, cheerful and good-hearted.

- A great partner to have at a party considering I'm ridiculously socially awkward, but she can help break the ice quite easily.
- A perfect romance; breaks overly cheesy moments with humor; avoids over-dramatism if your heart's in a good place; follows my views regarding a relationship.

Cole:

I don't think I even need to type out reasons for why Cole is probably the best character to ever exist in DA universe, he's so unique and compelling and his DA arc is one of the best in the game.

Honorable mention to Bethany because she never gets any love.

Nathaniel Howe will always be my favorite Bioware character. I liked his very dry humor, his intelligence, his ability to grow and change, his story arc, and the fact that there was still so much potential on where Bioware could have taken him. It's a shame they didn't because Nathaniel had possibilities.

The glommed part of his story line for Sebastian and turned a completely cool dude into an Character that just made me yawn.

 *One favorite per game.

Loghain: I am a sucker for old war-dogs, and Loghain has a really rich character -- lots of backstory and strong opinions -- even for the limited screen time.

Isabela: I genuinely fell in love with her towards the conclusion of her romance.

Vivienne: never mind the novelty of a mage NPC with some semblance of sense and accountability (and vouches for the Circle to boot!), Vivienne fits the image of what I see as "ideal" in any person just about perfectly: smart, wise, cunning, powerful, fashionable, well-connected, ... really checks all the boxes. Nobody is perfect, but hell if she does not come close. ^^

I appreciate all the replies so far (hence the trigger happy liking :P) and there have been some brilliant explanations!!!

Edit number 2: I tried to multiquote again and it made a mess of the whole post so I've give up in trying :pinched:

I'll just go back into liking from the side-lines again but keep the favourite characters and "reasons why" coming :)

With Vivienne being by far my favourite character in the whole DA series, you've took a lot of my reasons from the get go, OP. So imagine your reasons for loving Vivienne are also on my list. Because they are.

- I love her depth.

- I love how said depth isn't blatantly there on the surface and you have to actively read between the lines to really see and appreciate it.

- I love how most claim she's this monstrous, heartless see you next Tuesday, and yet she is one of the two companions, (the other being Varric), who actually approves of you saving everyone in Haven.

- I love her reforms as Divine Victoria, (as well as her outfit and tarot card).

- (Speaking of tarot cards), I love her default tarot card. It's my favourite one in the game.

- I love both her approval and disapproval content, though I rarely see the latter.

- I love how she's Indira Varma. Deserves to be said twice. Rest is spoilered for GoT spoilers and rantage.

Spoiler

I'll try to pick one per game.

Zevran: I didn't like him at first, thought he was an untrustworthy sleazebag. But the more I took him in my party and spoke to him, the more I realised he often made me laugh and feel happier. I really like his combination of easy-going humour and cynicism. He's got a horrible past, and some unscrupulous methods, but still has a good heart. He objects to almost all of the more cruel choices, and particularly hates it if you harm children or elves. Hell, if you let the demon in Honnleath get Amalia, he gives more disapproval than Alistair. I really enjoy his romance too, because of the focus on building up trust and friendship.

Isabela: Similar to Zev (since I never learn!), I made snap-judgements before she joined and didn't really bother with her. So she ran off. I invested time in getting to know her on my second PT, and learned that not only does she have the good sides of Zevran (that light-heartedness, humour), she's really kind. Her interactions with Merrill are just pure gold, and she has such strong feelings on what's right, even if she tries to brush it off. I was also surprised at just how wise she can be (such as in her banter with Anders about the concept of justice). Her self-confidence, acceptance and focus on the present (rather than the past) is really quite inspiring too.

Cole: This is a tough one because I haven't played DAI as often, so I haven't settled on a definite favourite. Cole is perhaps tied with Cass. I really love him though, because he's compassion personified. He wants to help people, offers rich insights into lots of characters and places. He's had such a struggle from Asunder through to DAI and his character can take two very distinct paths that emphasise different aspects of his nature. I find spirits fascinating anyway, so it's amazing to learn more about him. I like finding out about the 'strange things' he's done in Skyhold, even his manner of speech is very endearing.

Edit: I will say that Cass is a prime example of where I finally learned to have an open mind towards characters I'm iffy about, instead of leaping to conclusions. And it really paid off, I love her!

Solas because:

  • Gareth David-Lloyd voiced him to perfection.
  • He is incredibly eloquent.
  • He values wisdom and judgment.
  • He has a fascinating backstory.
  • He is interesting: his character seems to be rather grey but we know that he is essentially good.

Alistair because:

  • He's cheerful and charming.
  • He really, really loves my Warden!

I sort of like almost everyone. Often it depends on my current mood or the Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor I play and through all those playthoughs my list of favourite characters changes. Not much, though... there are few characters whom I grown to like...

Varric

 - he's mostly the voice of reason

 - he cares about a lot of people and doesn't hesitate to help them

 - he's not a fanatic or power hungry creep

 - he says funny things

 - he writes books

Cole (human path)

 - he's complete stranger to the world, but he's trying his best to learn

 - he doesn't lie or deceive others

 - I like his growth through Asunder and DA:I

Blackwall

 - he has done something terrible, but he regrets it(!) and even though he has chosen deceit he is trying to do good, to set right what he can and doesn't dwell in the past whining about it in some dark corner (I admit I kind of forgot to recruit him in my first playthough and only read about his personal quest, so this might change after I finish this one)

Morrigan because I find her character rather interesting and Claudia Black is amazing

Isabela because she reminds me of a more extreme version of someone I was once friends with.

Allistar because he's a sweetheart

Bethany because she's the little sister I never had.
