You can't be a protected wild animal, you can only live in a protected area. He was in a preserve, but the guides the dentist hired lured Cecil out of the protected area. The hunters are currently facing charges for doing this, as that is illegal.

But shooting a lion outside of a preserve is legal if you have the right licenses. And this guy spent tens of thousands of dollars to receive them.

The only reason he isn't facing charges is because he hauled ass outta there.

Afaik Zimbabwe is trying to get the guy extradicted to face criminal charges.

I hope he goes to a Zimbabwe jail if that's at all possible.

I heard them 100% Mother Africa schlongs are pretty long.

Actually when you think about it.

Even two days in an African jail as a white American would be hell on earth.

Idiots really need to stop taking photos of themselves with exotic animals, stick to white-tailed deer.

I'm almost more upset by how much money he had to spend on such a stupid sick hobby to begin with.

Hopefully he loses all of it.

I'm trying to find some clear link to post either way and am not coming up with anything. Yes, Zimbabwe is stating they want the guy, but they say it is because it was an illegal hunt (which it was, since the lion was illegally lured out of the reserve). I've not been able to find anything to either support or disprove the dentist's claim that he did obtain the proper permits, only that his guides who he paid the money to have been arrested for luring the lion out of a protected area.

If the forms really existed and the dentist can claim ignorance of the lion being lured, I'm not sure what kind of case there really would be. I did see that US wildlife law experts say there is no violation of US or international law.

I'm talking about the photo.

You want to hunt exotic animals? Fine, just don't take a photo of it.

If that's true then case closed.

The idiot should stay out of Africa for the time being and probably go change his identity or something.

Seems people are mostly upset about the concept of trophy hunting. This particular case gets into a mess of permits, and who did what, but lions, elephants, hippos, etc. can be hunted legally. My dentist has the head of some kind of wildebeest or something in his lobby. This is what wealthy people do for fun, get over it. I'm not a fan of trophy hunting but I doubt the practice is going to go away - Zimbabwe is a mess and they need the money.

Leave the guy alone ffs and let Zimbabwe figure out what laws were broken.

Or to me so I could fly to Otakon and also for Otakon.

With the 55k it costs to poach a protected lion I could do that a bunch of times.

You know how much money Zimbabwe could save if it didn't have to fend of poachers and ivory hunters all the time?

I dare say the absence of trophy-hunter permit fees is negligible in face of the maintenance costs.

I come from a state where subsistence hunting is a normal part of life. I've eaten plenty of game meat too. But I was outraged when I heard the story of this cowardly dentist. It really embarrasses me that he's an American. Stupid trophy hunters.

Yeah, a true hunter cares just as much or more about conservation than they do about trophies.

Heh, that's awesome.

If only the idiot decided to hunt a wildebeest then he wouldn't be lamenting his spot in the limelight.

When you shoot an animal it should be with a camera not a gun, take pictures not trophies.

I doubt he'll get jail, but banning him from ever hunting in Africa is most likely to happen. And the fact they all bailed means even harsher punishment. Of course, when they all strolled up to Cecil and saw the collar, I highly doubt even if he had a heart of gold he'd tell these seasoned African guides, "Welp boys, we done f*cked up! Let's go turn ourselves in." They'd probably guide his ass six feet under at that point.

What does one have to do with the other? Trophy hunters, however people may feel about them, aren't the same thing as poachers. Paying for a permit from the government isn't equivalent to hunting an endangered rhino to sell its horn to some Chinese guy hoping to absorb its horny powers.

Great place for a rich bastard dentist who contributes to the gradual extermination of an entire species to live in for a while.

Yes, a well-off, law-abiding, tax-paying, American dentist should have his livelihood taken from him by an internet mob and then be railroaded into an African hellhole because dead animals make people sad :-(((
