What does one have to do with the other? Trophy hunters, however people may feel about them, aren't the same thing as poachers. Paying for a permit from the government isn't equivalent to hunting an endangered rhino to sell its horn to some Chinese guy hoping to absorb its horny powers.

Take a look at this thread and then tell me again you don't see the connection.

Not all trophy-hunters are poachers, aye, and not all poachers are trophy-hunters. But equating those to an economical pillar Zimbabwe needs is nothing but self-serving argumentation, no better than firearms lobbyists arguing that in order to prevent gun crimes, you'd need to arm people as a preventive measure.

It's ultimately just fueling the problem, which is the needless killing of animals. And I will emphasize the word "needless" to close this argument. Any moral concerns aside, trophy-hunters don't add anything valuable.

[...] law-abiding [...]

I'm pretty sure that particular quality has been discussed at lenght already and is not looking in favour for the individual in question. So, your point was again?

On a serious note.

I'm glad this has blown up to the way it is.

More people need to know that this stuff is wrong.

And from the thousands who will forget about it the next time a big story comes up.

I am sure a hundred will carry on to help out.

ffs.

Just thinking about living in a world without animals like Lions, Rhinos or Gorillas makes me sick to my stomach.

And don't forget the monkeys...

Interesting how nobody even noticed the Rhino he killed earlier. Rhinos are on the endangered species list.

Yes, a well-off, law-abiding, tax-paying, American dentist should have his livelihood taken from him by an internet mob and then be railroaded into an African hellhole because dead animals make people sad :-(((

Yes.

Exactly.

Well **** him for that too.

That's a suggestion to his hopefully future fellow prison inmates btw.

Not really though.

Prison rape is stupid.

Still.

**** him.

A good prison beating.

Now that's smart.

Or a pirate beating.

And don't forget the monkeys...

Who'd want a Barbary Ape on their wall?

Not even the Barbary Apes like Barbary Apes.

I think many people take notice of all the animals that are being killed. At least I do. The only reason Cecil has gotten this much attention is because he was sort of a "celebrity" and the way in which he was lured out of the preserve and killed.

I hope something good comes out of all this. For example, like mentioned earlier, Delta airlines banning transport of certain animals. Things need to change. If people do nothing, nothing will change.

I'll go out and say that's it a bit hypocritical to condemn one person for the killing of an animal and then imply violence in retribution to be fair.

No one said anything about killing him.

Just beating him up and taking all of his money.

And that's fair.

Its also abit bizarre  that people react with this much anger and demand that something is done about it (which in itself isn't a bad thing), and at the same time completely ignores that children die of starvation down there every hour. Puts people's radars in perspective, really. If the amount of energy spent on fueling the lynchmob thats after the dentist *******, could be spent on feeding the children down there...

It actually hasn't been "discussed". Most of this thread is full of platitudes about hunting and has little to no substance about this particular incident and the specifics around it. Everything I've read on it would put more of the responsibility on his paid guides.

Calling for him to be thrown is some shithole African prison and to be raped and murdered over an animal isn't discussion, and it speaks nothing towards his innocence or guilt - it's just mob mentality.

As for the permits, it's not a pillar of Zimbabwe's economy I'm sure, and I never claimed it was, but it's a revenue stream I'm sure they'd rather not be without since Mugabe has been a disaster for that country.

He broke the law in Zimbabwe. Ship him down there and let Zimbabwe judge him. Plain and simple.

I'm sure people are aware of that too.

You can't be angry at everything at the same time.

I can't be angry at everything at the same time.

But that's more a media thing.

Well it's not hypocritical until we kill him...

I would be lying if I said I wouldn't laugh heartily if I heard the guy would be facing prison time and subsequently had a couple unfortunate dates with a wall or something.

But that would just be me exhibiting proxy animousity by misusing a distant occurence to excert my anger on a person I never met over a general issue I take offense to. That'd be just me being of weak character and ultimately just as wrong. What I truly want, emotional reactions aside, is to have the responsible persons being brought to justice and for the world to wake up and finally do something to prevent such crap from happening again.

At the very least he would by tried as accomplice. Just because he may not personally have lured the lion outside the preserve, doesn't mean he's not accountable for the situation to whichever punishable degree the ongoing investigation deems appropriate.
