Because it doesn't mean a whole lot to me. I'm not being negative here, I just don't get it. Was I just not paying attention?

Shepard is the only character we experience the N7 program with. Noone else seems to have it, until James applies way into the third game.

It's some sort of Human special forces? like Marines?

I mean, NPC's barely mention it. There are no N1's or N2's running around that are subordinate to Shepard, no N8 superiors, no special perks or skills related to being N7. It simply doesn't come up much.

And now it's going to appear in Andromeda, why? Maybe they'll show us why N7 is supposedly such a big deal?

How do you think it should be represented?

Maybe make it an optional class spec? Skills and training only available if you choose that spec? Although then you'd need alternatives that are equally interesting.

http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/N7

The wiki gives some useful information, but it seems not much of this came through in the game.

The training might be fun to go through, but AI  doubt they'd go there. Too complicated. It would seem cheap if they just handed it to us though. With Shepard it was understandable, but this is a new, possibly somewhat untrained PC.

I agree, it doesn't mean much to the setting of Mass Effect at large. But due to N7 marketing from the prior trilogy, it is practically iconic of Mass Effect considering that they plastered it on nearly every promotional tool.

A better question would be, what does N7 mean to EA and Bioware's marketing team?

Just a combination meant to sound cool, it works.

Personally, I don't want to start out as another space jarhead.

N7 means Mass Effect. I mean, that's about it.

N7 doesn't even really mean Shepard to me. "Spectre" means Shepard more than N7 does.

N7 actually means a lot to me when it comes to how I perceive Shepard. N7 indicates the best of the best of the alliance military. You don't reach that point without both tremendous hard work and tremendous skill. N7 is the difference between Shepard being an just an accidental hero and Shepard being the right person in the right place at the right time.

In terms of the future of ME, I suppose the significance of N7 is only a matter of nostalgia. I am a little concerned about the next protagonist being too much in Shepard's shadow, which is partially why I like the idea of being able to choose a non military background. I think the next protagonist needs to stand in some way starkly apart from Shepard.

It means the best training, the best equipment, the best assignments and they expect the best in return.

Wasn't aware the N7 designation was a philosophical ideal that's meaning differs depending on perspective? I thought the N7 designation was merely an alliance military rank given to those who have achieved the highest level of training in the special forces, in short it is merely Shepard's little mary sue badge letting everyone know how super special and awesome he is.

Looks like an item identifier on a menu.

"Yes, I'd like the T8 and uh. . .one N7 please."

"Would you like to make that a combo?"

"Sure."

There's been no confirmation, as far as I know, we play as an N7 trooper. It's been said, trailer dude doesn't = the main pro. Just a place holder. There is no N8, N7 is the highest rank, shown in link. We also work with N7 Engineer, Lee Riley, as well her N7 squad on Cyone, again in the link.

I find the N7 emblem cool, I'm considering on getting a tat of it. Though, I'll probably wait till Nov. 7, just for the hell of it. The N7 training sounds like a way to weed out, snot nose kids from the men.

N7 is love, N7 is life.

Seriously though, Mass Effect is a big part of my life.  I love the Alliance, and if it was real, I would join and hope to be accepted into the ICT/N7 program.  I favor Cerberus more, and I'd probably join them if they approached me first.

Would be nice if the classifications got broken down a bit as we do know that N5 and N6 classifications exist.

FYI: Anderson is an N7.

It's hard for N7 to actually mean anything when it has no context. No one ever really tells you what it means and Shepard never talks about it. It's supposed to be analogous to SEAL Team Six or something like it, right? Well we never see an N7 team in action and Shepard never talks about what he did as an N7.
All it is is a visual marker for Shepard, like Batman's bat logo on his chest.

What does N7 mean to me?

First it meant Shepard and everything he stood for.

Now I have this T shirt with the N7 logo on it and it's just....collecting dust in my closet.  Letting entropy eat away at it, like the pile of ash that is now Shepard after he threw himself into the magical space beam/touched two magic orbs/shot a cylindrical tube of death.

So ... it signifies paying the ultimate price for the safety of the universe? That's pretty awesome!

Nope.  It means dying in the stupidest manner possible to appease two writers' megalomania.

Also, I didn't play Mass Effect to save the universe.  I played it for the characters. Which was the focus of Mass Effect all along.  Until the last 10 minutes anyway.

I don't mind it, but then again, that's because I generally have more in-common with military types than civilian types.

I agree though, I would never want to be a Marine. Naval Officers are just better.

I personally think we should have a more 'military' system, with more of a 'military' background.

Then again, BW has never been good with its portrayal of the military, and given a lot of the fanbase's... predilections, I don't think they'd want a real military type either. It wouldn't appeal to SJW sensibilities.

Hm, yeah, still sounds like what I said, actually.

And Shepard wouldn't be Shepard without the drive to save the galaxy/universe, a responsibility bequeathed upon them in a railroaded moment of sacrifice in the very first mission of the trilogy.

You CAN save the universe without cowtowing to a massive plot hole, aka Starbrat AND not killing yourself in the process.  That would have made for some more varied endings at any rate.
