So explain the Jedi. it seems to work in their world of space Magic. Why not ME's? *shrug*

In the Starwars space magic galaxy (far, far away) lightsabers reflect laser beams. A regular sword does not deflect a bullet, or an arrow. In the ME universe the N7's wielding these swords do not even have the skills to deflect bullets, if you try it in multiplayer, it wont work.

I'd like to think that they wouldn't be using regular swords in a time of Reapers and aliens. Head canon and all. Lol

Also, how do we know what skills some of them do or don't have? We've only encountered what? 2 or 3 N7s total? They don't necessarily need to DEFLECT space bullets. That's what stealth is for.

We cannot say for sure what they can or cannot do but to the best of my knowledge, most N7s  were not specialised for ''Tactical Cloak'' level stealth, the only N7s who are truly stealthy are the Infiltrator Shepard and the N7 Shadow Infiltrators. Of the N7s encountered in the game we know atleast that they don not reflect your bullets back at you, this is probably caused by their inability to do this, yet, again I cannot say for sure.

This deserves some extra attention.

N7 was originally just meant as lore fluff telling us Shepard was really badass - in the last 2 games N7 became really important to the games because some marketing guy walked in and said "People are really stupid and forget what is what - so we need to provide them with some symbol they can associate Mass Effect with".

Are you really debating the usefulness of swords in the ME galaxy, based on the usefulness of "laser" swords in another setting?

That´s like asking why we didn´t use gridfire to rip Reapers apart, ships in the Cultureverse can do that.

Not exactly what I meant. But I'll throw something else out there. Vibroswords. 'member those?

As I said earlier bullet deflection isn't necessary to throw in ME, too much Star Wars, but that doesn't mean a blade wouldn't have its uses. People seem to be fine with using an omni-blade all day without talking about how ridiculous it is or how illogical it is in futuristic fictional setting. It can't deflect bullets either and its not meant to.

I would never ask that. That's just silly! Actually, I have no idea what gridfire even is. *kanyeshrug*

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this yet, but I'm pretty sure the codex mentions at one point that N7 is the only designation of that program which is allowed to be worn on a uniform. That's why we don't see anybody wearing N1 or N2 logos.

The problem is most of those "uses" are practical purposes not combat, so carrying around a bulky, meter+ long sword that isn't very useful for anything but killing someone who you already snuck up on (and who could just as easily be killed by a much smaller and more easily concealable knife, garrote or silenced pistol) is hilariously impractical, especially if the kill you are making is relies on you not being percieved as a threat. Rifles or other longarms are better at literally everything if you aren't worried about stealth, even CQB ranges where it is much easier and requires much less less free space to simply bring a muzzle to bear than it does to swing or thrust a blade with any kind of force. It's why no modern military uses a sword for anything but ceremony...they're useless.

The omni blade is much more practical because it takes up no space if you already have an omnitool while maintaining all the uses as a traditional metal blade, and is likely more efficient at those tasks as well. Other options not subject to damping attacks or power loss would be something smaller like Tali's bootknife, or the bayonet attachments one can use on ME3 shotguns (assuming they're detachable). But this is ME3, and rule of cool takes precedence ergo space ninjas (whose swords you can even shoot and break, showing how ridiculous they are).

The wikia about omnitool weapons:

"Although melee-combat applications for the omni-tool are almost as old as the device itself, the feature was largely unused prior to the Reaper invasion. The need to take on multiple husks in close quarters forced the Alliance to develop ways to enhance the tool's offensive capability.

The most common melee design is the "omni-blade," a disposable silicon-carbide weapon flash-forged by the tool's mini-fabricator. The transparent, nearly diamond-hard blade is created and suspended in a mass effect field safely away from the user's skin. Warning lights illuminate the field so the searing-hot blade only burns what it is intended to: the opponent.

More technically adept soldiers frequently modify their omni-tools to maximize stopping power through electrical, kinetic, or thermal energy. Some troops integrate their weapon with their kinetic barriers, transforming the omni-tool into a wrist-mounted bludgeon; others fabricate flammable gases, held in place by a mass effect field and ignited upon impact. All prove deadly surprises for opponents who expect a disarmed Alliance warrior."

If someone wants to melee you (husks, abominations and dragoons ), it might be usefull to be able to defend yourself in these close-quarters, without having to wear a shotgun to blast their behinds off. You could say the same for banshees, brutes and phantoms, but they can easily end you.

I'd definitely accept a smaller blade as a compromise. But katanas are way more fun. Practicality be damned!

IMO N7=Shepard. Unfortunately, I don't think the trilogy did a very good job of establishing N7 independent of Shepard. The N7 logo immediately makes me think of Shepard not the Alliance, and I'm not sure if that's a good thing.

I could simply reply "apples and oranges", but since you quoted my sentence which read "but having soldiers SOLELY use a sword?" after several paragraphs exposing the benefits of melee weaponry in modern and future warfare under certain circumstances as an adjunct to projectile weaponry - I will respond directly to your question.

The Jedi dont solely use lightsabers. There's your answer. The force itself is their weapon, and a very powerful and effective one at that.

They would be equivalent to a Biotic that doesn't use a pistol and instead just uses an omniblade.

Additionally, Star Wars Jedi-Sith warfare is compounded by the fact that everyone chooses to use a light saber. They literally decide to bring knives to a gunfight. Probably some honor bullshit reason I'm sure. As someone else pointed out, lightsabers can deflect shots, which is useful as a defense. But really, if you can predict what your enemy is going to do before they do it, a laser weapon should be just as if not more effective than a light saber in the hands of a Jedi or Sith.

A laser weapon in the hands of anyone would be unstoppable, since lasers fire at the speed of light. Even the most Force-tuned Jedi or Sith couldn't stop them in a fair fight. But laser weapons don't exist in Star Wars, plasma weapons do.

It is commonly, yet incorrectly accepted that blasters fire laser-beams. Google ''Star Wars laser weapons'' and you get the plasma Blasters.

Lasers are not necessarily unstoppable. A man-portable high capacity laser is very dangerous, but a low-capacity one is about as dangerous as a torch.

Shepard , God of the Milky Way > N7 > Wet tissue paper > new born child > Spectre

The problem is that Shepard wasn't really anything beside Shepard.

They were N7 at the start of the series but were becoming a Spectre at the same time. So we didn't got to see much of that. As a Spectre they worked a total of ONE case. So we didn't got to see much of that either. As a cerberus agent, they were give complete control and a less xenophobia crew. So we didn't really see the real cerberus. And in mass effect 3, they were a shotgun ambassador thingy A.K.A Shepard dealing with Idiots.

OK rant aside let's get back on topic.

The N7s are the Best of the Best in the alliance so having them lead a mission into another galaxy would be logical. Gameplay-wise it is hard to represent, due to balancing, but If we are a N7 again i would love the MP N7 class from ME3 it would give our character a more unique feel compared to our team mate or enemies.

But Shepard was a Spectre so Shepard would be infinity greater then Shepard.

The first thing that comes to mind is "Mac Walters" when I think of N7. There's no logic behind that, so don't read into it.

Just as 007 = James Bond, N7 = Shepard, at least as far as I'm concerned. I'm not terribly interested in seeing any other N7 characters.

But what if they were born in London?
