Still can't get the controls right

How do I tell a companion: you take care of that one over there.
Also it just seems intuitive to me to click where I want to go. I know intellectually that will make the character get the sword and swing at the air. But it's so hard for some reason to acquire the muscle memory for this game.
I also don't understand why the followers ignore everything unless I'm in tactical mode. What is the point of pausing? In DAO and DA2 (and Kotor and ME1&2&3) I would pause, select what I want everyone to do, and unpause. That has no effect whatsoever here. Why is this game so weird to control?
Please I would like a clear, short summary of the controls for dummies.

I have a PC and play on Casual or Normal difficulty, Single Player, so these suggestions may not help you. However, here goes..........
Left Click mouse to select the enemy to hit, then hold the "R" key to keep attacking. When that one is dead, Left Click to select next enemy. If you have a close fighter (swords/dagger) you must use the "W" key to move them into close proximity to actually hit the enemy character. For me, this is really difficult, -- that's why I tend to stick to Archer or Mage in Inquisition.
They do have a pretty decent tutorial written up on the Forum about using the Tactical Camera to direct your character. Read it and try out it's suggestions -- it will help, but I still can't seem to get it to work consistently, I'm still doing something wrong. Also, I hate to micromanage every move by every character! I sort of got around the micromanaging by looking at the individual character record and, following another posters suggestion on how to get the other characters more independent, I changed the setting so they would "follow" themselves, that way the character interface seems to generally select the best fighting option and enemy. Maybe that would work for you?
I really miss the click to move, too. I've found that for moving, if I hold down the right mouse button to point the direction I want to go, and the "W" key to move forward, it works good for navigation -- but it winds up tiring my hands and wore the ink off the key on my keyboard! I really miss the click to move, or click to select my target, but these workarounds helped me finally play the game, and enjoy it. It really is a great game! And beautiful.
Another thing you might want to try is changing the keys to do the things you want to do so they match other games that you've played -- for instance, I switched the search key "V" to the "TAB", and the "SPACEBAR" to pause as it was in Dragon Age Origin, the change for Pause really helped me a lot - a little thing, but it seemed like a major improvement. Good luck, and have fun!

Click to move is just a pain and unnecessary clicking. i use mouse look and G for auto move instead. No clicking or holding required. In tac-cam you have click to move and click to loot though.

You can target enemies by clicking Tab, as well as right-clicking. You can also change target by clicking Tab once more.
If your companions are doing nothing in combat, you should check their behavior and tactics setting under Character Record.
To get them to attack a specific target, just target that enemy and click "Attack my target", oooor:
To decide what your companions should do during combat, you can enter tactical mode by pressing T. Then you choose one of the companions by clicking their party frame, and then you right-click the enemy you want your companion to attack. The enemy will then get marked by the companions frame where it says "Attack". Tactical mode can be used both in pause and real-time. You can unpause tactical mode by either clicking the hourglass in your actionbar, or by clicking left-ctrl.

Customize your controls to what u might be more able to get used to. I did this with my mouse....but my mouse is a naga so i can do pretty much every damn thing with it. But if u dont have a gaming mouse then customize the hell out of whatever makes u feel more comfy.

The way I think it works is that the dominant button, the left, is for actions that you want the game to do. Close the codex entry, select the ability you want to use, choose a spot on the map to jump to, etc. The right button is stuff you want the controlled character to do within the game, i.e. attack, loot, read.
Getting used to the controls took me a tremendous amount of time, because, for a rightie like me with virtually no experience with video games, it seems counter-intuitive.
Stick with it for a while and don't rush yourself. It tries your patience but is fun once you've practiced and experimented a bit.
