As Corypheus was introduced in DAII:Legacy, I'm curious if another character from that DLC will make a return - Malvernis.  And I'm curious just what this character is.

http://dragonage.wik...geforn_the_Foul

http://dragonage.wik...he_Lonely_Vigil

http://dragonage.wik...n_the_Wasteyard

The trio of associated codex entries imply that 'it' was a lethal threat to 'the Stone'.

There seems to be similarities to both the taint and the profane, as far as consuming and/or corrupting lyrium.

It also appears to command a 'Calling' mechanism.

Instead of being destroyed it was imprisoned by dwarves in an orb (possibly using red lyrium? "Chained in lyrium stained with the blood of a hundred warriors").  Perhaps it could not be killed?

That it turns into a spectral dragon when fought is an intriguing twist.  I'm thinking this is a unique skill (?).  Although it's a shaky connection at best, my first thought is of the 'criminal' mentioned in Ancient Elven Writing.

Could he/it be a forgotten one?  Something 'else'?

Please forgive my tenuous grasp of the lore >.>

Any thoughts?  There's a lot of interesting loose threads with this character.

I think Malvernis is a type of naturally, but very rarely occuring thing in dwarven history.... if they only knew.

My theory is that it is the accumulation of "Gangue" which seems to be the corrupted/not purified part of The Stone. if The Stone is Lyrium and Lyrium is alive .... then what of it's corrupted "gangue"

It seems that Dwarves had a role/job to do in fighting off/ cleansing the Gangue of off The Stone:

The Stone has a will that surrounds and directs; she guides even when we are willfully blind to her influence. But she is not pure. The Stone bears a corruption as old as balance. For the dwarves to prosper, the gangue--the waste and unstable rock-- must be cut away. But like the Stone, the gangue also has an influence. Each of us must face this, must carve the worst of ourselves away, but theLegion of the Dead bears a unique responsibility. Only the fully adorned of the Legion can face the gangue, can cut into darkness that afflicts the raw Stone. She encircles us, and we must protect her, here where darkness meets light.

--A Legion of the Dead inscription, undated

The Gangue is also referenced in one of the Hissing Waste/ Tomb of Fairel quest where a magister believe it to somehow be demons bound into lyrium, while the Dwarves had a superstitious belief about the Gangue:

- Demons bound into the rock! How did the ancient dwarves manage it without mages? (Binding runes? Subtle properties of stonework? Investigate!)

- "Gangue" carved into walls. Could be translated from Old Dwarven as "Stone waste" or "Impure spirit-of-the-stone." Dwarven superstition, saw demons as "impure" spirits of rock?

I believe Malvernis may very well be an extremely powerful "gangue" and impure spirit of the Stone

There's still so much that we don't know about Dwarven history, but in my opinion Dwarves and the Stone had a mutually beneficial /symbolic relationship .... which ended for some reason. Just like the Elves, the "Dwarves forgot the Dwarves"

Thanks myahele! I had not been thinking of the 'Gangue', it makes a lot of sense.

Quick tin-foil ramble!

Since DAI I've been leaning towards the theory that the Dwarves and Lyrium are somehow byproducts of the Titans being sacrificed in order to create the Veil, and perhaps simultaneously imprison the 'creators' and 'forgotten ones' in their respective realms. This would render the dwarves as caretakers of their Ancestors, which fits the dwarves view on the Stone. I don't think the dwarves could refuse this duty as the Stone would compel them.

The gangue sounds quite a bit like red lyrium.  Could it be the manifestation of chaotic aspects of the Titans?  Or perhaps an outside entity infesting or 'hijacking' their remains (normal blue lyrium), such as Malvernis?  Might the Titans have become tainted (wherever it originates from - again, connected to Malvernis? or the Elvhen pantheon, forgotten ones, etc.) and then had to sacrifice themselves in order to prevent the destruction of Thedas, relying on their descendants (dwarves) to clear away the taint?

In any case, Malvernis is described as turning dwarves into 'slime', while the taint turns its hosts into darkspawn.  So that contradicts somewhat a link between Malvernis and the taint.

What color slime does Malvernis turn it's victims into?  Green? >.>

So hoping the Titans will be touched on in Descent!
