Any good SmashDept and SmashGuard videos?  I'm looking for tips on how to play this pair.

As Marksmad said, the gold and platinum solo threads might be a good place to start.

Prestacious' themed challenge group has some phoenix solos/duos as well, if you're interested.

For smashguard, just be sure to pick bonus power on charge, skip lash.

Otherwise the kits is very easy to figure out once you lean on playing more aggressive then playing it safe. As the trick is to just get in any mess possible and see if you can get out of it (if not, that's what rockets are for). Also always try position yourself around RHA cover or having an exit plan to some cover. Remember that you can cancel the second half of smash animation with a dodge if needed. And watch out for swarmers.

Thanks, Deerber.  Been a while since I saw an original Glacier solo.

I tried that BC 6a evo on him before and didn't find it all that beneficial.  In my case the SmashBro sweet melee options serve just fine as his "bonus powers" once in CQC.  Plus going into heavy melee right from a dodge-canceled Smash is a thing of beauty.  I keep his CD around 200% with a power mag AND melee stunner...and enjoy my full 6b barriers after a charge.

Skipping Lash or putting in 3 points for a yoinking utility...up to the player.

Max Lash for the SmashLashDept though.  For it is good.

I think that is still from the time where smash had an insanely short cooldown...

This video is 20 FPS (Geth can't hit ****) and with much faster cooldown on Smash, but with no elemental explosions.

These are more recent and fun:

Sy7ar played at 60 fps, as far as I know. That said, the age of the vid should be pretty clear from the fact that the central room on glacier was still open :P

He upgraded his PC way after this video. He was also one of the first people who brough attention to the low FPS A.I. thing  :)

My best advice is don't make my mistake and skip Lash.  I never used it for the longest time and it is so amazing.

Your references are old Deerber !   :P

On topic, links to videos are now precised in the platinum solos thread for the great majority of characters. There are respectively 11 and 9 videos in this topic for the Phoenix adept and vanguard, involving various builds, weapons and factions. Most runs are on Glacier, White or Giant, but Clusum has also solo'd with them on Vancouver and Dagger.

The gold solos speedrun thread contains also vids for the Smashbros.

The scientific term for Phoenix Brothers is Goons.

Here's a Phoenix Adept w/ Falcon and CSMG vs. Geth Glacier:

This is in the already-mentioned gold speedrun HoF and there's a lot of good goonplay there, but singling this one out because he doesn't take the minmax route and skip lash, and Falcon is cool.

Here's a Goonguard w/ Talon and Hornet vs. Reapers Vancouver:

I like this Goonvideo, and it's not linked in any of the challenge threads/speedrun threads so including it here.

10 Waves Survived Plat Solo with Goonguard.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpfUNxvVzho&feature=youtu.be

Not the most original combo for a plat solo (Venom against Cerberus on White), but IMO this kit's not really the easiest one ever to execute a 10 WS plat solo with, even using venom staggerspam against Cerberus (although it's a mission successful with no extraction because lolcerberusgoons).

There are of course a wealth of many other good goonplay videos in all the solo threads and challenge threads. TheNightSlasher does many good goonsolos as people have mentioned upthread, and you can find console goonplay videos with the goons in those threads as well.

Had a match last week with buddies that involved a Lashed A-bomb, several explosions and incaps, followed by such immense laughter that I all 4 of us had tears streaming down our faces.  You had to be there, but yeah...it's pretty much necessary.

Yeah, very low FPS is exactly what I thought after the first 30 seconds of that video. Nice to see it wasn't just my imagination.

Why would you link this prehistoric video? The smash nerf doesn't even make him the same character.

Charge to instant smash is what makes the kit for me (otherwise I'd just stick to the adept version). It's also a perfect way to handle on host Phantoms too. Charge stagger her > instant smash > Biotic charge finish if she still lives.

Also don't play too much weapon focus to see the beauty of this setup. You should be mostly charging and smashing everything in sight. Not having bonus power puts too much of a stop to playing more power focus.

And don't dismiss it right away after a game or two. Keep at it until you finally see how good it works, and you'll eventually see there'll be no more going back to non-bonus power charge for here on (exception being the Slayer).

Whenever you don't get bonus power, substitute with a heavy melee for dmg reduction (even if you go full fitness instead of melee, like I usually do) or gunfire > smash (if you have enough health) or another charge and try at bonus power.

Lash if for playing the range game (why lash works on the adept). You don't want to be playing the range game with smashguard. Ever. Always close ground, and always charge>bonus power smash or just smash. This is the style that finally made me see why so many folks prefer the smashguard over the adept.

Lash also doesn't have bonus power evolution, so always better to charge over lash. (Sure lash has very fast cooldown, but also has very long animation)
