So in the buildup of storylines following DAI and toward the Deep Roads DLC (which we now know as The Descent), I've been wondering if we'd ever get to see one of the prisons that the Old God/Archdemon are or were kept in.  That's possibly what's in the desert beneath the Western Approach, and who knows, it could be what we'll find at the bottom of The Descent.  But then I realized...

Maybe we've already seen such a prison, emptied.  Maybe that's what the Primeval Thaig we travel to in Dragon Age 2 was.  Furthermore, if it was, I think it was probably the prison for Dumat.  What do we have to support this idea?

Well, there's the Red Lyrium Idol.  It kinda has that look, with the spike-pointed crown, of  the statues of Mythal, Andraste, and, well, Flemeths supervillain costume.  And there is the theory that the Old Gods are the Elven gods imprisoned, potentially for being tainted, and if I were to match them up, I'd match Dumat to Mythal (with Andraste being an Old God Baby, but that's neither here nor there.)

Perhaps the lyrium was tainted and turned red by being in such close proximity to the song of an Old God?

Additionally, the Primeval Thaig has open spaces suitable for containing something the size of an Old God/Archdemon/Super Dragon.  Oh wait, it also has Dragons currently inhabiting it (at least until Hawke kills them).  I don't know how closely Old Gods as dragons and dragons as separate creature are linked, but we know because of DAI that at least Mythal can command some (like the Guardian you get if you drink from the well.)

Also, the Primeval Thaig is built in a style alien to the dwarves, as Bartrand points out, and the loot you get there is either elven or seeming inappropriate to the location.  What's one of these items?  The Ring of the (tree in elven alienages).  And who else has iconography related to trees?  Flemeth/Mythal.

Finally, Corypheus, High Priest of Dumat, was found and imprisoned nearby by the Wardens, and after he escaped, the first thing he did in the guise of the surviving Grey Warden from Legacy is use Bianca to find the location of the Primeval Thaig.

There might be points against this, as it's been a while since I played DA2, so if anyone has anything to add or detract from the theory, by all means point it out.  As it stands, the Primeval Thaig fits as the empty prison of Dumat.

"Perhaps the lyrium was tainted and turned red by being in such close proximity to the song of an Old God?"

Wouldn't it be more likely that the lyrium is tainted by the darkspawn? If red lyrium is blighted, and the blight is spread by darkspawn, who got it from trying to enter the Black City, then the darkspawn must have brought it with them when they dug up Dumat and tainted them. Perhaps Dumat could've spread it after being tainted, provided that they stay in one place after being tainted.

But nice thought. It would be neat if it was such a prison.

Among other conspiracy theories, I'm not going to be surprised if the Old Gods were already tainted before they were dug up by the darkspawn.  We know from the Old God buried beneath the Western Approach that it's singing a song so powerfully that you can feel it when you get close, and I'm not going to be surprised if that song, the Calling, and the "tainted song" the red lyrium sings (as opposed to the old song of regular lyrium), are all the same song of the taint.

We have, what?  Three songs that are sung?  The Taint/Calling, the "old" song of the lyrium that empowers Templars, and the fade...?  Does the fade have a separate song, or is it the same as lyrium?  It's been a while since I've done my codex readings.

I suspect that the Taint is far older than the Darkspawn.

I believe the Legacy DLC in Dragon Age II is what you speak of. It was Corypheus prison for like an eternity. It is a prison and  Dumat's name & altar pop up so I would say its fairly safe to say that it is an official Prison for Old Gods in a sense.

Sorry if this a necro, but while we did not encounter an old god in The DLC, reading in The World of Thedas Volume 2 reveals that an Old God WAS imprisoned there at some point in the past (not that this seems to affect the DLC at all).
