You know, I did originally state that it could be kind of vauge; whatever level of details or vagueness you feel would be perfect. The point is that we get more say in our background rather than a predetermined one.

I would be okay with that if it is orchestrated well.

I was particularly annoyed in the trilogy with how little exposition of Shep's background you had. I mean, why couldn't we visit Akuze, or Mindoir, or Elysium (directly)? Even just for a mission or something? It would have made their background more real and tangible, I think.

It's not really clear what the proposal entails. Is this a request to have more background choices than ME1's two sets of three choices, but to have each choice come up less frequently than the ME1 choices did? Or is the idea to throw a lot more resources at the background choices?

Some of the backgrounds don't seem like they'd be playable. Like Akuze, you're just surviving a thresher maw. You basically do nothing but avoid it the entire time and that's it. Mindoir Shepard was 16 when the raid hit. To really make this work, it would probably be pared down to maybe one or two basic backgrounds, and a key decision at the end basically becomes part of your service history and your psyche profile.

Too many options would result in a character that wasn't far removed from a blank slate.

Yes, just going with a blank slate would be a more efficient use of resources.

And make the game better.

I would prefer to have some gameplay playing through the characters early Life and key moments leading to the Expedition... Which shapes who you are at the start of the journey.

Might be too development Heavy, but really, I think it would help me feel more attached to my character. One of the things I liked with the Fable games was the aging of the Character and choices shaping you and your World. The idea was really good and maybe it would be a good way to create your character.

How about little to no background and let the player define the character over the course of the game?

Seriously the most important part of the character should not be the things the player never gets to experience that happen before the game even begins, it should be the actual events of the game and how the character chooses to react to them and how they in turn define the character.

Bioware tried that with the Inquisitor in DA:I.

Opinions vary on whether or not that worked. I'm firmly in the 'didn't work' camp, and thought the Inquisitor's bare bones background partly made him/her dull in comparison to Hawke or the Warden.

As far as character background goes I'd rather Bioware either went the route it did with either Shepard or Hawke. Shepard of course had some limited background choices that the player selected at startup, and Hawke mostly had a set background other than whether or not he or she was a mage.

You know what would be even more interesting? If they actually showed and allowed the player to experience the events that lead up to forging the person that your character is by the end of the game, the defining moments of your character's life should not happen off screen before the game even begins, the should be a major part of the story yet to be told.

In short I don't want to be told about how awesome my character is for thrashing everyone in a tournament I have never experienced, saw or even heard about until that guy mentioned how awesome my character is for thrashing everyone in it as it means nothing to me, I would much rather characters react to how much of a **** my character is for wiping out the peace loving race of Aotearoa provided it is actually an event in the game that I the player had an active hand in.

Having a playable origin story could be a great way to establish a character's backstory. Although I don't expect it in ME:A, I do love that idea. I thought it worked well in defining who the Warden was, and helped make him or her an interesting character despite not being voiced.

Too bad you can't use your backgrounds to solve any problems.

No they didn't, depending on your race and class choice you had a fairly defined background, if you were a human you were from the Free Marches and belonged to a noble house, if you were a Dwarf you were a surface dwarf that belonged to some dwarven crime ring or something, if you were a Qunari you were from a Tal-Vashoth mercenary group and there were more than a few occasions where people and even your own character reference irrelevant moments from their past like the parties your family threw and fond memories of your drunken auntie Dorris who has no relevance to the game apart from one line of dialogue where your character waxes nostaligic about the past.

You misunderstand, the entire game is the character's story, the things that happen before the main events in the game are largely irrelevant, it is the main events and how your character reacts to them that defines them and shapes them into the person they become, not the things that come before.

Playable background at the moment of getting to Ark would be a really nice touch. Most likely won't happen though.

That was implemented to late in ME3 dlc, being an Engineer was highlighted twice in Omega and Citadel dlc. The DA team started in DA2 but virtually forgot about it in Inquisition

I am kinda split on this. On the one Hand, I don't want a Character with a Backstory, that includes any significant or potentially traumatic Experiences like, for Example, Mindoir Shepards Experience with Pirates or all three of the great Events (War Hero, Survivor, Ruthless), because those are Events that would greatly shape the Psyche of my Character and I'd have to take into Consideration, ultimately limiting my Ability to roleplay.

HOWEVER.

I very much like the Choices the original Post mentions. This gives us a little more Customization of our Character - how old are they, what do they believe in, what Job Experience do they have. They are not restrictive, but open up more Options to shape our Character, while not implying a huge, life-changing Event that would be invisible to us. They could even open up more Dialogue Options similar to these Inquisition Perks in DA:I.

So, in the End, I am in Support of building a Background, as long as this does not include huge, traumatic. life-changing Experiences, but rather define, who our Character is, how they were raised and such. I ESPECIALLY like the first Bullet Point, where we decide how old our Character is (which could maybe even the hidden Choide of Voice Actors, perhaps? DA:I's german Version didn't have Accents but rather and older and a younger Voice and I adored that). The COmmunity is very diverse age-wise and that Way, everyone could have a Piece of the Cake and not be shoe-horned into a Character of a certain Age.

I'm also in support of more background choices and even more if they matter. To be honest, I want pretty much all choices to matter period. Somewhere, somehow and/or to some one.

The problem is if there's already a story on rails like in the ME trilogy, it would be difficult to implement. Thr background choices. They could barely do it with the limits that we were originally given. I'm still bitter that they had dialogue about kaiden and his experiences in biotic school but Adept-class Shepard (if i recall) could sit there like "biotic school? Implants? Whoooaaaa what are THOSE?!"

I think the background should be limited to a point especially if it's reffered to in the story I'd say go with 6 differeent backgrounds to choose from similar  to DA because at least there while it is limited there is quite a vast range they all seem to work well within the story. I think it largely depends on how much they want the background of the character to influence things.

I like it when background choices are referenced within the story, but to suggest and alternative:

The Mandate devs still have their mock up background creator from their successful kickstarter

It's quite detailed and nuanced, with background choices influencing starting stats and faction reputation.  It will probably never be referenced in the narrative of the final product, but with something this detailed I don't think I'd mind.

Yes, more background choices. I believe that knowing more about our characters' history would increase our immersion in the story.

The Warden didn't really solve any actual problems along the main quest on account of a specific origin. I'm not sure what kind of problem the PC should encounter that would make use of it.
