coldi awoke in her bed confused, remembering being scolded by her master again but then nothing. She held her head as it ached, she heard whispers in her ear. "Pretty pretty girl" it said driving her mad. "Shut up... SHUT UP!" She shouted her hair covering her face.

"Coldi " she heard from her master as he stormed her room to see who she was shouting at. Coldi grabbed her master's waist holding him tight "make it stop just make them stop!" She cried. Monkai patted her heard as she cried in fear in fear,seeing the bright light swirl around her feet.

"Coldi we can't help if you don't talk..." monkai said hugging her so she might calm down.

"The lights won't go away forever changing, the voice of the woman won't go away forever rhythming when I sleep... I just want it to stop!" Coldi said fear of what was happening coating her throat.

Act 138: elaborations

coldi felt her master's gaze as he left the roof. She sat down staring at her reflection in the pond. "I think master knows what's wrong with me... he looked at me like I was a freak when I told him what was wrong..." coldi said losing her fiery disposition with each word.

Galatea knelt beside her pulling back her hair ragged hair, it had a natural blue hue to it that she found unique. "You have pretty hair and the way you cut it make you look like a dragon!" She said trying to cheer coldi up to no avail. Coldi placed her hand in the water causing ripples to appear...

"Why are you here... you have money and I assume another house... so why do you stay.. " coldi asked,it befuddled her to why her master allowed a slaver to stay with them. She could understand herself but why her she thought.

"Good question... is it because I want to see how the world changes due to your master... do I seek passion where none lie... am I just bored and need excitement. Maybe my friend is buried over there and want to stay close " Galatea said playing with her hair marveled by it's colour and style. She pulled Coldi's face to her staring intently in her eyes "or maybe because I've fallen in love with both the master and apprentice "

Coldi's face burned red with embarrassmet by Galatea's confession she opened her mouth to respond only to see Galatea laughing at her embarrassment. "As*hole..." she said stifling her laughter, still trying to ascertain the reason for her staying .

"Just enjoy your life princess don't worry bout your masters approval... find your own happiness." Galatea said kissing her head and leaving her to ponder what she said

Monkai lit candle after candle in a circle down in the laboratory. The emitted a scent of black lotus burning blue flame, he blew the match out inhaling the sulfur from it, "your late apprentice " he said as coldi entered.

"Apologies master... it won't happen again.." she said kneeling in forgiveness,seeing the stream of light surround everything in the room.

"I called you here tonight to discuss what you see.what we see." monkai said filling a bowl with lyrium. They here whispers emanate from it and a wonderful sound ring inside their minds.

"So you do know what's wrong with me. Before those bastards touched me I didn't see that weird light... TELL ME!" Coldi said breaking her formal tone.

Monkai teased his hand from touching the contents of the bowl watching as the vapor rise from it. "Its called the leyline similar to tears in the veil.. but benign in nature, like a fault line . Mediums can see and interact with them, they allow us to commune with spirits the brighter the colour the less likely a tear will happen.. the darker and more sinister feeling the opposite. Dreamers can see them as well but the aren't like us they bend and distort the leylines allowing them to enter the fade without lyrium and into the minds of others"

"Wait if I'm... we are mediums what separates us from dreamers and isn't that elywon girl a dreamer too?.

"Well we don't destroy the boundaries for one ,we respect it communing with spirits taking them into ourselves if need be to learn and grow strong to protect our friends and loved ones..." monkai said not hold back his pride. "And elywon is a oddity among oddities yes she is a dreamer but it appears she has the ability to enter the fade completely and ending up it odd places. Normally dreamers only mentally do what they do influencing their victims and occasionally directly controlling them, but these are questions for tomorrow. Your new training begins now."

Coldi stood in shock by her master's words he rarely elaborated on anything always brief descriptions and answers, she saw him drag his palm against the leyline, crackling as he did it she moved to where he was mimicking his gestures "it's warm... and calm... but lonely "she said feeling it.

Act 139: master's folly and advice

monkai watched as coldi meditate innately summoning wisps that danced around her. Wisps where generally devoid of purpose making them perfect practice partners. She opened her eyes and jumped in excitement at her success.

"They are adorable.. I'll name you blue, pica,and stratos " she said bouncing the wisps on her hand.

"They aren't pets... they are partners that will aide your endeavors." Monkai said his tone warm and nurturing. "What we do will require more vigilance even the wisps you play with can be dangerous. "

Coldi looked at her new friends bouncing as if to play, she knew demons wanted enter realm of mortals and images were ideal targets but she felt nothing from her companions. "But your... technically a abomination... seems hypocrital"

Monkai rubbed his chin unable to explain his condition.. "I'm a symbiote... but yes I am... I learned the hard way... this how I came to be, listen to my tale do not make the same mistakes I did respect the boundary. Act 140: gilded

Mathias walked the streets of dairsmund, his stomach groaned from hunger. His grandfather hadn't returned in over a week from his business leaving him to fend for himself. He saw a baker leaving bread out to cool, he stole the bread pushing away customers with fire running into the crowd.

Mathias sat down in a alley gluttonously eating the bread. "I don't need anyone... and they don't need me.." he said sniffling. He looked at his tattoo dusting crumbs off it. "Pfft heir to a tevinter madman whatever.. if dad never cared why should I.. who bloody dies on their kids birthday... " he angryly said tearing another bite choking on the size.

"Its cause you eat to much.. " a girl a few years his senior, she had crimson hair styled into a ponytail . Mathias looked at swallowing the last of his bread, he stood and backed away "shove off... " he said fire erupting from her hands.

"Woah easy snips I'm a friend, names Kara Bret.. put the fire down. I know a place that has food and shelter. " the girl said extending her hand

"I don't need help... I'm seven I can take care of myself " Mathias shouted

"Its either you come with me or the templars looking for you hurt you.. choice is yours.." Kara said walking to him. Mathias felt weak collapsing holding his stomach in pain. "Told you... so ready to go?"

"Screw you hag" Mathias said. Kara shook her head and picked him up, "you really should be nice to people who try to help you " she said carrying him to their destination.

Mathias had been in the dairsund for a week, he was grateful for the three meals a day and the compulsory education, but he found himself alone without anyone to talk to. He saw kara from time to time but they rarely talked he found out she was a Templar in training and had different classes than him.

"Is that boy who the new recruit found.. I hear the first enchanter said he was a seer " a student said. "Pfft just a mad kid.. only women can be seers.. he won't survive the year before he's made tranquil." Another said.

Mathias heard the others gossip about him as he ate, he left the table taking his food to the cellar.

Mathias picked at his food his only company was a stream of blue light echoing in his ear. He felt alone constantly discarded by others "so you come hear to eat too" kara said sitting down next to him. She smelled like sweat and musk, her oder choked the air around them.

"None your business... you smell.." he said before kara pulled his head into her arms. "Smelly attack beware the stench of hard work and swordplay " she said laughing as Mathias tapped her arm in surrender. "So how's class" she asked chewing her bread.

Act 141: compassion

Mathias walked the fade as he slept dream envisioned his mother and father but they just stood smiling telling him how proud he was. He dispelled the illusion annoyed by them, "proud... you died when I was five you don't know me.. you left me with him... I HATE YOU!" He shouted casting fire at the illusion listening to the screams they made.

why did you do such a thing a redhaired woman said appearing behind him. Mathias turned facing the apparition, "you want some too cause there's plenty to go around spirit. "

hush child I won't harm you I am a spirit of compassion I seek only to help... the spirit said her white dress flowing as she glided to him. She held him tightly as he struggled to remove himself from her

"Get off!" He shouted waking up panting. He saw the stream of light circle around the dormitory as the other apprentices slept.

Mathias stared at the ceiling wondering what the stream was and why it felt comforting. The enchanter giving the lecture called to him "daydreaming won't finish the exam master Ragin " she said.

He looked at the paper "categories of spirits and demons" he scoffed at the title as he read the questions.

Mathias sat in the cellar waiting for kara to interuppt his solace, he closed his eyes feeling the stream it echoed a wonderful sound to him. I found you my child the voice said. Mathias opened his eyes dropping his plate in shock, "what in the void..." he cried looking for the voice that called to him.

"You alright kiddo " Kara said carrying her plate looking at her friend like he had seen a ghost.

"I'm fine... just eat... " he said rubbing his temple wondering what was going on.

Mathias traveled the fade looking for the creature that called to him. "I'm here spirit why did you summon me" he shouted.

I simply wish to help.. I feel your lonliness and pain I seek only to help compassion said coming appearing in a glow of light. Mathias looked at spirit, her red hair blew in her face covering her orange and green eyes , she stood taller than him so she looked down at him and he looked up to her.

"Demons like to help too.. so how I know your not lying to me. Whether I'm alone or not I have no interest in dying.. " Mathias said standing his ground extending his chest.

Compassion glided to him wrapping her arms around him letting his head press on her stomach "spirits are not interested in mortals we wish only to observe and help if need be" she said her voice tender and loving, Mathias struggled as she held him becoming tighter as he did "hush my sweet child I'll be your mother, sister, protector. No one will harm you while I'm here" compassion said stroking her new child's head. Mathias hugged her tightly as he cried into her dress feeling safe and loved that life never gave him.

Mathias ate his breakfast quietly as the the other students passed him by. He pulled a book he stole from the library, on mediums and dreamers it cracked with age as he opened the book,gently turning the pages so they wouldn't tear.

A shadow blocked his light, he looked up to ask them to move. "Well it would appear the riffraff can read" a boy said he had dark skim and his face was tattooed in odd designs.

Mathias looked at the boy realizing it was jace a older mage he judged to be around twelve who made his life miserable since his arrival three months ago. "Yes I can read... whether you will comprend what I read is another story."

Jace knocked Mathias 's food to the floor and picked him up by his collar "think you so smug don't you you little twerp just cause your in the advanced classes and buddy buddy with the Templar intiate you think your better that us." Jace said

"I am better than you.. near do well what was you last score? Fail right " Mathias said. Jace struck Mathias in his face,blood exploded from his lip and nose, Mathias kicked jace in his groin dropping him to his knees. Mathias kneed him in his face returning the favor to his tormentor.

Jace tackled him down using his weight to pin him down and began to beat him. He saw flashes of light as jace's fist struck him repeatedly.

"Hey get off him he's just a kid!" Kara said pulling jace off Mathias

"Pfft whatever we will settle this later twerp.." jace said leaving rubbing his hand feeling the broken bones in his hand.

"You okay snips.. come on let's go see enchanter Arias ,she'll pa- " Kara said picking her friend up from the ground

"I don't need your help.. I would've won... I don't need anyone! So quiet acting like we are friends! I NOT SOME KID THAT NEEDS HELP!" Mathias shouted picking up his book and leaving the dining area. "Everyone is out for something or other I can only depend on myself..." he thought.

"I heard you skipped class snips.. " kara said carrying two plates of food. Kara looked at her friend seeing his face healed. "So you healed yourself...impressive "

"Tch I won't apologize for what said earlier. I meant it." Mathias said leaning against the wall. Kara sat beside him putting his food next to him.

"I know i totally get it your alone yadda yadda, I'm mate hear me roar. But your not alone you have a friend who will help you. Void even other mages that will help you. " kara said picking the vegetables off her plate sliding them on to Mathias's plate.

"They see me as a freak... they don't want her. The other students have a pool to see when I go rabid... **** them and their mothers. " Mathias said scrapping the meat off his plate and on to kara's.

"Nonetheless your well gifted you shouldnt squander your gift..."

He watched her spar with another boy twice her size parrying her strikes as she resorted to fighting dirty, kneeing her foe in the groin and knocking him out cold. "And that boys and girls is the Bret special " Kara said giggling noticing Mathias carrying his oversized pack. "Hey snips, lunch time? " she asked.

Mathias nodded and left to await her in their usual spot. Her fellow recruits made kissing sounds and teased her saying she had younger paramour. "Next person who says something gets the special you too ladies " Kara shouted in embarassment slamming her sword into the ground cracking the earth. She turned her head smiling at the idea Mathias and her's relationship

Act 143 bloom

Six years pasted since Mathias had entered the darsumnd circle he had grown into a talented mage spending his time in meditation in the cellar free from worldly distractions. He took a deep breath focusing on the blue stream of mana, he found they were called leylines when spent a summer in orlais to improve upon his unique talent. "Been some time compassion.. I've missed you.." he said dragging his hand across the stream.

"Apologies but I've learned so much" he said ecstatic by his application of his gift

Mathias turned his head to hear metal clanking in the darkness. He kindled fire across the candles illuminating the cellar. "Gad that's bright snips" Kara said carrying their dinner.

"Maker I told you I hate that name.. and I smell turnips... " Mathias said rubbing his temple. He distanced himself from her as sat beside him.

"Yes turnips that's all the vegetables left... maybe if you at meat like a normal person it wouldn't be so bland." She said taking off her armor loudly breathing as the last of it came off.

The smell of the cellar became unbearable from the sweat and musk emanating from Kara. Mathias pulled soap and a cloth from his pack wetting it with his cup of water. "For all that's holy woman.. bathe more than once a day when it's sparring days" he exclaimed handing her the soapy cloth.

"My if you want to see me naked you just have to ask... little monkey. "Kara said laughing.

"I'm not a monkey... that was one time I was curious and you we're late showing up and I!" Mathias said pulling his hood over his face in embarrassment. Kara laughed at her younger companion for all his angst and knowledge he was still a kid with childlike curiosity.

"The Knight commander and first enchanter are allowing you to take your harrowing, mediums are a special case " Kara said excited for her friend. Mathias wondered what entailed in the ritual, he heard jace go through it but came back tranquil. It brought smile to his face knowing his hard work brought him this far at his age.

"Apprentice you have come far in your short time with us but now it is time where you the will learn if your a detriment or asset to the world. " the first enchater said. Her accent sounded antivan to mathias's ears,he wondered why a antivan was head of a rivaini circle.

"The first enchanter speaks truth should fail we will slay you... but if you are a coward tranquility is the alternative path." The Knight commander decreed.

Mathias walked to the pedastel placing his hand over lyrium, the essence of the fade. "Lets get this over with " he said feeling his entire body convulse in agony.

Act 144: ascended

Mathias awoke in the fade he felt like he had stayed up all night forgoing his daily nap. "So this is the fade... when added with lyrium." He said as he gazed the field of flowers emitting a fresh bloom, he picked a bundle smelling them, thinking Kara would love them.

"So where do I go now that I'm trapped " said walking through meadow and into a twisted forest. He felt the malice around him,it hungered to devour him. For the first time in his young life he felt true fear.

remember what I told you my child nothing will harm you while I am near compassion said coming from a tree. She glided beside him pointing to the darkness. through there lies a demon of hunger. Only through banishing it will we leave.

Mathias trekked through the brambles tripping over gnarled roots. He saw the demon feeding itself on black liquid from a chalice and devouring legs of humanoid flesh. Mathias clapped his hands slamming his hands to the ground, lightning erupted from the ground arcing to the demon.

The demon opened his maw devouring the lightning. "Haha so a mage has decided to step into my domain... you will make a delicious snack.. " the creature bellowed stepping toward the boy. It belched loudly as lightning came from it's mouth. Compassion erected a barrier to deflect the blast protecting Mathias.

no shall harm my child compassion decreed casting a spell of paralysis over the demon.

"This will be too easy" Mathias shouted throughing a ball of fire to the demon. Mathias shook his hands looking at the smoking turn to compassion. "Looks I... " he said hearing a loud roar behind him "ah ****" he thought as the demon opened it's maw to devour him.

Compassion pushed Mathias out of the way. He heard aloud crunch as the demon mauled her tearing her in half throwing her at him. Mathias saw the only mother figure he knew dying coughing black blood stroking his face shaking as she was dying. I... promised... nothing will ever harm you.. did I not... compassion weakly said...

Mathias panicked as she laid there dying. He learned spirits never truly died ,they would be reborn anew but different. "Hey mom stay with me... please... I can't do this alone... I'm just a kid." He said crying as the demon devoured lower half making obnoxious sounds as it ate.

Mathias hush... it's part of growing up.... fly to your goal.. live a happy life with Kara... compassion said her body fading into entropy. Mathias saw the demon walk to him, chewing compassion's leg, he saw his friend fade anger and fear filled his heart, his body glowed with power.

"You want to eat me... well NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!" Mathias shouted,he willed his mana feeding off his rage and compassion's fading body. Her body was absorbed into him as the demon devoured him.

The demon laughed as he tried to bite down. He felt it's jaw explode as Mathias burst from it, landing on his feet. The demon stepped back in horror. "You want to eat... well open wide" he said conjuring a massive bolt of entropy at the creature obliterating it. "That was for my mother,sister, mentor, and my protector. " Mathias said his eyes glowing orange and green, his skin seething with mana

Act 145 : First

Kara sat at Mathias bed during off duties time he had passed his harrowing. When she heard the news she was ecstatic with joy only to find her friend comatose after giving only the finger to both the first enchanter and Knight commander before passing out. She opened a box showing a pair of Ruby studded earrings she intended to give him after he passed both as a gift for his birthday and success on his achievement. "Come snips wake up you'very slept all week. Its been rather dull since you've been gone. Tell me to shut up or curse at me. Something anything " she said placing her hands in her lap.

She had grown fond of the boy seeing him as something special. She found him in the alley eating stolen bread when she skipped class. He was dirty and half starved, she had considered taking him in just to deflect her punishment for skipping class. But over the years she grew to pity him as he sporadically opened up. She knew something happened to him that left him a angry and bitter child.

Kara stroked his curled hair that grew long enough to form a mullet. She pulled her knife and began cutting "sleep or not still need a proper grooming " she said tugging his hair.

His face went wide in joy forgetting his place. He kissed Kara on her lips, licking her tongue pulling back and hiding in his covers once realized what he had done. "I look like a jester..." Mathias said breaking her chain of thought. His robe covered him head to toe looking like was covered in his sheets . Kara burst into laughter realizing the tranquil made a mistake in his size. "Its not funny I look like my gramps in winter!"

Kara stopped laughing seeing his scowl. "Here let me help " she said tearing the sleeves off his robe and shortening his hood and shortening the rest into a vest . "Better ser steals a maiden's first kiss "

Kara stood next to the Knight commander and first enchanter as they formally granted Mathias his rank. They didn't look at each other still awkward from the night before. They avoided each other like they had the plague. Her mind kept showing her their kiss "it's just a childhood crush it will pass like they all do" she thought as the commander and enchanter left to tend to their duties.

Mathias fixed his vest and pulled his hood over his head. "Well I'll be in the library... see you around... " he said meekly. His normally deadpanned tone replaced with a stutter and shame.

Mathias sat on his desk cross legged his vest tattered and stained with age. He had braided his hair down to the nape of his neck ,he grew a foot taller and had a few hairs on his chin. He looked over his students as the wrote down notes as discussed the lecture. He was made a junior enchanter a year on his fithteenth year and found his freedoms increased as he showed promise.

Mathias sat in the cellar eating his dinner. Gazing upon the leyline, it had steadily grown hungry for something since his harrowing whatever had resided in that realm was long since corrupted. He considered banishing it but it was docile.. for now.
