Mathias snuck from his room in the dead of quietly making his way to the cellars. He pulled the door gently not making a sound, his hand went cold as ice with anticipation. "Just breath it will be fine... just like in the books in the library.. books don't lie right" he whispered his hands trembling.

Kara him step down the stairs making as little noise as he could. She lit candles so she may see her friend. "Your late.." she whispered.

Mathias walked toward holding hee waists. She still towered over him despite being half way through his teens. Kara smiled as he blushed looking away, she noticed how nervous he was his hands shaking. "Hey don't look like your going hurl.. I'm scared too"

"Really? I thought you.. you know.." he said awkwardly his voice cracking due to his and and nerves.

"Yeah... I was serious when I said... I had nobody special.. " Kara said pulling him closer "just be gentle okay?" She leaned in kissing her younger lover.

Mathias gently laid her down letting her head lay on his vest for support. He kissed her while sliding his hand up her tunic feeling her warm breast feeling the pointed tip. He was in utter bliss he had made love not sex with the love of his life he looked to the sky smelling the air not caring it was all a illusion, he knelt beside the imitation of Kara pulling a box of earring before her. "Marry me let's escape the circle live on a farm away from magic and the chantry " he said smile ear to ear.

The specter swatted the box into the sea she doesn't love you.. she's using you.. how could you let her touch you!" it shouted reveal it's green and orange eyes. Mathias stepped back as the illusion of Kara morphed into compassion. She was clad in a orverly sensual black dress,her crimson hair flowed in the winds.

"Compassion... " he asked. He felt her presence it was off putting to say the least, he had limited his contact with her after she dropped him to his spiritual death three years ago and every interaction since had be dubious.

Oh now you acknowledge me... now you converse with your mother ,sister, and protector. Ungrateful whelp! You get a taste of some harlot and you think you can forget ME! ME! compassion shouted pushing Mathias over and over until he fell into the water.

Mathias swam to the surface treading water as gasped for air. The water span rapidly in a circular motion pulling him to the center, he fought against the current only for tendrils to grab him pulling him under. He willed his mana changing his nightmare of drowning to being in a meadow.

"Compassion.. what's the meaning of this" he shouted wiping his face. Tendrils eriupted from the ground beneath him forcing him to his knees

The meadow turned black bountiful flowers that smelled of spring, rotted and smelled of death. The blue sky turned red and smoke polluted the air. Compassion walked to her captive slapping him over and over. ungrateful child who raised you! Who helped you nurture your gift! WHO! WHO!. AND THIS IS HOW YOU REPAY ME! PLAYING WITH SOME TART! she screamed grabbing his face dragging her nail across his neck... slowly making her way to his jugular.

Act 149: change

Mathias put on his pants trying not to wake Kara. He had broken their rule of sleeping in each others rooms, it was their one rule to avoid discovery of their illicit affair. For five years they lived as criminals hiding their love from their superiors as if some immoral thing,he had grown tired of it constantly considering running away with her in toe living off the land as farmers in the backwaters of antiva.

He looked in the mirror making sure his appearance was proper. He brushed his stubble and hair he had cut a inch high, and straightened his vest hiding the love mark Kara placed on his neck.

He sat on his desk reviewing a copy of the recent news among the circles. There had been a rebellion of some kind in orlais and the every circle had gone to war with the templars, it was a matter of time til his own fought amongst themselves.

Weeks had past since finding out of the war, his circle had devolved from a relitivly sedate place to a battlefield he watched as his fellow mates fought against their jailors some dying by the sword others giving in to the stereotypes of his people turning into monsters. Mathias dropped his staff grown weary of all the death and ran to find the only one that mattered.

Kara drove her sword into a demon's chest watching it evaporate as it died, she moved to the mages that summoned it. They casted fire at her but she cut through the flames cutting them down in return. She knew these mages they were her friends that talked to her when Mathias was gone. She wiped her blade "duty... comes first... before emotions" she said turning toward Mathias, hearing his foot steps.

"Kara **** this madness and let's get out of here" he said walking to her stopping when she raised her blade to him.

"And go where? Live like fugitives we've done that for years. Real life has come... I will kill you and then myself. I love you that much I'll risk damnation so we may be together! " she said steadying her sword. Mathias saw the desperation in her eye, she had never killed before and these long days of battle tore into her Psyche. She charged at him swinging her sword wildly lacking her normal prescion.

Mathias dodged her strikes wishing he had kept his staff. " Kara listen to me we can live in peace away from the war, have a family. Five kids and a dog remember we talked about this! We can still do- " he said before feeling a sharp pain in his heart. Blood spewed from his mouth, his vision blurred as she drove the blade deeper.

"Just hush snips.. I'll be with you soon... just wait for me" she said kissing him one last time ,tasting his blood mixed with saliva and removing her sword from his chest. He slouched to his knee coughing blood.

"But... I... lo..ve.. " he muttered falling into his blood,the world became damped and dark he looked at Kara weeping by what she did. His last thoughts were that he hoped she was right about her plan... dying hurt.

The creature caught her blade and looked at her smiling sadistically so your the little ****** that took my property from me... not much to look at... I'all be sure to tell him you loved him... and that you won't miss him Scorn said mockingly as Kara tried to pulled her sword away for a another strike. Scorn's hand glowed with magic melting the blade burning Kara's hand. She then drove her hand into Kara's chest ,Scorn gazed a puzzled look to her victim.

odd your heart isn't in the right spot.. curious she said removing her bloodied hand watching Kara slump to her knees.

"Mathias... I'm so sorry... my.. lo...ve "she said falling over the life ebbing from her eyes as she saw the creature jusmp from the window, hearing a loud splash. AS her life faded she begged the maker to guide her lover to a merciful end soon.

Yeah this was definitely cathartic for me.. so I felt it appropriate. I mean **** things went **** and her fate was sealed either way.


I like to think for all her bluster, training, and scars that she just snapped due to combat stress and ideal of protecting Mathias. She really wanted to stop but felt trapped believing they'd die anyway so she took the "romantic "way out. Thinking they'd live on in oblivion

They honestly loved each other more than anything in either of their lives. scoens appearance was literally a ft fluke.

I wanted to show what happens when one is attached to someone but their job is to watch their and kill them. Like what happens when your forced to do your duty but you can't, afraid of losing the one you love. I found it similar to Tristan and Isolde somewhat maybe even Romero and Juliet.

It was really good! I feel like the devs just completely glossed over the effects of the Circles falling apart - we saw the Chantry blow up, and next thing we know, apostates and Templars are just roaming around fighting each other, with only passing references to the tragedies some of them endured.

 

I feel like there should have been a game in-between DA2 and DAI where we play as one of these people, or at least some backstory for our DAI character.

 

I like how you set up this situation between Kara and Mathias. When I had Guy pull Elowyn out of the Circle, I was worried that a Templar would not have gone against his duty to annul the mages. I think it would be interesting to put together a collection of stories around this subject.

Well there we're some temps that sided with the mages willingly so it's believe able.

And a few stories about the temps oh yes please. I know most image supporters have a issue with temps but there are good one

Edit: i left a six year gap for Mathias and Kara (7-13) and a five year (16-21) for that very reason and I'd love to see how you explore their relationship

Act 150: remorse

Mathias found himself impaled to a tree his arms and legs pierced by black tendrils. He tried to move but felt the pain in his limbs unbearable and quickly gave up. "So... this is what damnation feels like... figures" he sarcastically said lowering his head. His mind flickered to his last moments his lover murdering him, his fear of dying and how he told her he loved her.

A sultry voice hummed in his ear it was a lovely sound but malice and jealousy coated the sounds. Mathias looked for the one who sang to him turning his head in all directions.

I so your awake beloved.. I hope you like your chains... Scorn said forming from his shadow,straightening her dress as she finished constructing herself.

"Hmph figures you'd be my tormentor.. in this dead space.. " he said solemnly resigned to a expectation of agony.

Oh that's rich beloved you think your dead Scorn said laughing at his melancholy. oh no your not dead... I love you! Since a I found you I loved you as a mother loves a child... but you didn't love me as much... YOU CHOSE THAT SL*T OVER ME! Mathias realized who he was talking to,his closest friend had been warped by jealousy. His resolve to live whatever life he had faded, as his mind was flooded of images of him killing Kara,running for days into the forest murdering anyone who got close to him, finally collapsing in the road looking at his bloodied hands. The tendrils released causing to fall to his knees.

"What have I done... I'm a monster.. a rabid dog..." he said staring at the ground angry and remorseful at what he done.

Scorn knelt to him holding his chin and kissed him her tongue slithering in his mouth. we are not monsters but beings truly becoming one with each other.. nothing will harm you while I'm around.. but in return I demand your love and devotion

Mathias was in shock by her kiss he could feel her lust and desire, it was genuine but he wondered could spirits truly comprehend human emotions but he honestly did not care he was a shell of what he was . Scorn raised her dress showing her pink lotus,she rubbed her stem moaning as it made wet squishy sounds. Mathias Ragin was dead... he was now Monkai Ragin a member of a dead house, descended from nardeth the spirit caller, rivaini by birth but tevinter in ancestry. He began filling out the papers of his new life fighting back tears of remorse

Act 151: adaptation

monkai arrived at the minrathous bridge he poked his head out the carriage to better see the city. He was amazed by how it was larger than anything he had seen,ignoring it's archaic architecture ,and what he was taught that tevinter was a den of blood mages and monsters.

They arrived at fresia's building stepping from the carriage he watched the people pass him by not carrying that he was a mage, he began to relax. "Young man carry to help a lady with her luggage. " fresia said carrying her luggage, monkai decided to help her to help her before leaving to turn in his papers

Monkai waited in line to have his papers registered ,listening to a woman berate her daughter. "Your a disgrace to our house. Working as scribe while your sisters show promise.. " she shouted the mother had dark hair light skin and her voice was harsh and cold devoid of love. It reminded him of how his grandfather spoke to him. He cleanched his fist feeling his nails break his skin.

"Hey lady you think you can talk to your daughter like that!" He shouted regretting his outburst. The woman waved her hand dismissing him.

"Just stay where no one will see you.. " she said walking away shoving monkai away. "Watch yourself boy..." the woman said tossing her hair. Monkai gave her the finger and walked to the desk looking at the girl fighting back tears of embarrassment.

"You alright?" He asked.

"Thank you...but it's just mother showing her love... least she said happy birthday.." she meekly said.

"Really.. it's my birthday too how old are you?"

"Seventeen.. you?"

"Twenty-two. I just moved here from rivain."

The clerk gave a puzzled look "that's far! How come?"

Monkai pulled his stack of papers from his pack organizing them. "Here you are miss? "He said discreetly asking her name.

"Uh a tavern called the wh*re's gambit. " he said scratching his head. He bid his aquintance farewell, wishing a happy birthday to her.

He found his brown and bloodied vest drew attention to him,and decided to blend in with the citizens. The silk was soft against his skin and it was light than the vest he wore tgrought his life.

He walked into a alley removing his hood and stared at the sun noticing clouds forming. "So this freedom... I wish you could see it love" he said as rain dropped in his face,he let the rain soak him thinking it was penance being washed away from his soul. He pulled his hood over his head and walked the streets listening to the summer rain hit the ground.

"Thank you... "she said pulling a cookie out of her bag quietly taking a bite. They didn't talk just sat in their seats. He began to see how she mirrored him,her loneliness matched his as child.

"Your papers said your a mage of laetan lineage but grew up in rivain... you have nice tattoos.. and earrings" she said breaking the silence.

"Yeah my father fell in love with a woman... and long story short uncle died I moved here to learn my roots.." he said trying to keep his story straight.

"Well... if you need work til your inheiritance comes... the circle is looking for a temporary first enchanter.. while the divine is busy..." she said giving him a piece of her cookie shyly looking away.

" I'll look into it. I might like it here.." he said dipping his half in his drink.

"You'll need sponsorship... to enter.."

One had dark brown hair with a slight reddish tinge,and she had piercing eyes she had piercing eyes that looked right into his soul. He feel out his seat when he saw the other one, she had azure eyes that looked as clear the oceans,her hair was the only thing that separated her from kara hers was long but brighter in colour . "Kara!" He said rising up.

The woman looked confused "apologies but you have me mistaken for someone else. My name is zera..." she said, her voice eerily similar. Monkai wondered if he had drunken too much as he rubbed his face

"Don't speak to the lower class... they are covered in disease" the dark one said her tone stoic and indifferent.

"Cassia be nice to my friend... and how'd you find me?" Muriel asked getting out of her seat.

Zera pulled a vial that glowed brightly from her pocket . "Father made these remember your late for dinner"

Miriel's head hung low realizing her mother would be attending... "okay.. bye monkai... nice chatting with you."

Monkai patted her head "same to you kid. Thanks for the information have a good night" he said watching miriel's face smile.

He returned to drinking as they left trying to push the image of Kara out his mind.

The three sisters walked home taking the long way home for Miriel's sake knowing their mother would bully her, picking at her self-esteem.

"Soooo who was the boy " zera teased her sister proud that she talked to someone other than her and cassia

" nnno one..."she stuttered embarrassed by her sister's insinuation. Her face burned red pulling her hood over her head.

"Whatever he is don't spend time with him... he feels off I sensed he had magic but it felt... odd" Cassia said breaking her stoicism replacing it with concern.

"Oh you say that about every one miss sour puss " zera joked shoving her sister playfully. Cassia shook her head annoyed by her sister's lack of priorities.

"I do think he's cute... I've never seen a rivaini before.." miriel said blushing "he was really nice..."

"Hey geezer hate to interrupt but uh i have a appointment " monkai said politely raising his hand.

"Allow me to introduce myself... if only prevent being called geezer. I am magister caius vaellious. And my daughter tells me your a medium yes?" Caius said picking his words carefully. He stared at the young man intent on listening to every word and deconstructing them.

"Yes i am home tutored but very well versed in politics, economics, and obviously magic. "

"How so I understand those images born in the south are jailed... are you admitting to apostasy... "caius questioned folding his hands leering at him.

" what do you think... but I am of laetan blood and free agent. " he said avoiding the question, he felt sweat drop from his scap wishing he cut his hair. He found his sponsor to be sharper than he thought.

Monkai felt the world go cold as ice. He got what he wanted but he couldn't shake his sense of dread. The more caius explained his terms for his service the tighter his throat became as if snakes slithered around him choking the life from him.

Act 154: humanity and theory

monkai fell on to his bed exhausted. In the past few months of his indentureship he had succeeded in gaining the coveted spot of interim first enchanter while the divine ran the chantry. He noticed the little but distinct differences that laid in tevinter. They had fewer circles,but they functioned as academies for those who qualified ran by enchanters like his own but the minrathous circle was normally managed by the divine directly while controlling the imperial chantry . The templars lacked disruption of man's abilities joking they were myths told to the southern mages to keep them collared, they were subservient to the divine of tevinter and by extension him. He closed his eyes preparing to sleep but heard a polite knock on his door.

The door opened with miriel carrying a plate of food. "Umm.. you forgot to eat again" she meekly said.

Monkai gently took the plate from her, he found since becoming a abomination.. he didn't need to eat and only did so to please his domineering other half. " what in the void is this..." he asked looking at what appeared to be stew but it was a grey gooey mess.

"Zera made it for all the apprentices... " she said digging her feet into the floor.

Monkai set it down beside him frightened as it bubbled. " I'll eat it later... sides I don't eat meat..." he said finding it unsettling how open he was with her. Miriel could sense the room grow awkward.

"So... being the first enchanter... is it fun..."

"It is but I checked the records... why aren't you enrolled? Most the other residents here are either graduates or attendants "

"I lack the gift... mother was never pleased about that" she said pulling her hood over her face.

"Well mundanes are just as if not more powerful than mages.. they are resourceful,cunning, and have a odd tendency to do what..." he said before holding his head in pain. His mind flashed of memories of him and Kara and her words of murder and suicide. keep talking to her... see what happens Scorn shouted causing his headache to intensify.

"Um monkai are you ill? " she said reaching for him

Monkai moved to the other side of the room. "Apologies.. I have a headache.. may we finish some other time. I'all bring a few baked goods "

Miriel jumped at the offer like a child getting what she wanted. "I'd like that..." she said bowing then quietly closing the door.

Monkai collapsed to his knees holding his head withering in pain. i warned you! Didn't I you don't need anyone else but me! Scorn said squeezing his brain.

"I'm going to cut you out of me... your not compassion your a demon masquerading as my friend" he said grabbing his letter opener cutting open his throat. He felt no blood come from his wound stabbing his juglar to get some reaction.

Scorn laughed at his attempt at suicide. you can't kill us we have so much to live for we must show our love to the world... and self harm isn't a proper display she said mockingly. Monkai dropped his knife kneeling defeated, he wondered if he should say he was a monster tell his master so he may be killed since he couldn't do it himself.

Monkai sat in his office filling out paper work and requisitions for his charges. Most saw him as a grumpy young man who got lucky with his posting, few aside from the mages that resided at the manor he lived in dared to interact with him due to his biting sarcasm.

He leaned back in his chair staring at the ceiling dragging his quill across his neck , smooth as if he never attempted to murder himself. He looked a the fungus that grew on his dinner a week ago he'd forgotten to dispose of,he saw bugs eating it while the fungus slowly grower and fed off the remains. He took a empty tome from the bookshelf after disposing the rotted food and began writing forgetting the paper work that was due in a hour.

Caius argued with his wife chastising her for her obvious nepotism amount their children " Murica you need to stop talking to her like that!"he shouted

"She needs to grow up! I did not give birth to that... weakling. Miriel should be hidden away like a dog that buries it excrement. " murica said brushing her hair.

Caius clenched his fists taking all his will not to to strike her. Their marriage had been political and while they loved their children he despised how she treated miriel. Woman I warn you don't tempt me" he said his voice sharp as knives ready to skewer her.

Murica merely waved him off knowing he would do anything "best worry about zera and that... boy you've decided to groom. Something's not right about him low horns are always trouble. " she said mockly blowing him a kiss as she left to attend her business. As the door slammed shut caius struck the wall creating a crater, he seethed with anger and disgust toward murica, thinking she had become a liability in his plans

Act 155: The Magister's Daughters

Cassia swung her staff gracefully piviting her feet at the right angle increasing her momentum at her trainer . "Six steps to the right, strike the center stopping the heart. Strike with the end breaking his jaw, drop forty degrees sweeping his legs from him, then execution "she thought proceeding with her plan.

She slammed her staff into her trainer his eyes going white as he faded from consciousness. Her face was emotionless as she twisted her staff,as she her clapping.

"Bravo my daughter perfect form excellent precision. " murica said congratulating her. Cassia brushed her hair back,sweat flowing from it. She noticed a small tear in her attire.

"A tear.... unforgivable. And I was off by four seconds... it was not perfect " cassia said correcting her mother. "But thank you"

Murica grabbed a staff from the rack inspecting the weight "then we will make it perfect "she said taking the first strike .

Miriel sat in her room playing chess by herself, hiding from her mother's chastising. She knocked her queen over in surrender. "Damn..." she whispered falling into her pillow. She thought of her mother's words of her being a embarrasment and monkai defending her. She was glad he lived in the apprentice wing of the manor,the other mages avoided her or just said hello and left. They feared her due to being their master's daughter. Monkai made the effort to talk to her but only to be friendly. Miriel heard the door open and zera slamming it shut.

" Vhenhidis Fastavass kaffas! Ciutiti inuehebatur pater! "She shout punching the wall on her side of the room. Miriel pulled a half full jar from under her bed filled with coins.

"You know the rule... you swore three times.. that's three silvers " she said opening the jar." and is papa trying to control things again"

Zera put the coins that laid on the table into the jar, frustrated by her father's concern. "Yes! He just sent Feros to seheron acting like it was for my own good!" She shouted stomping on the the breaking it in half.

Miriel had grown used to her sister's tantrums ,valid or imagined. "Well feros was a *******.. " she teased putting the jar back under her bed.

Zera stomped on the splinters of the table grinding her heel into them. "Now he expects me to attend a party for the new guy "

Miriel let a smile creep on her face "will monkai be attending... " she asked almost in a whisper.

Zera stopped her foot gently setting it down and walking to the bed where Muriel laid. "Thats his name.. what a odd name it's not tevinter in the slightest. " she said sitting next to her sister. She smiled at how her face turned pink. "Maker's blessings girl does my baby sister have a crush on the lower born mage "

"Nnnooo we are just friends I promise! Don't tell cassia.... I mean no.. I mean he's cute but.. it's platonic.. I guess"miriel stammered hiding her embarrassed face in her pillow.

Zera laughed at her sister playfully teasing her innocence. "I won't... but maybe monkas "

"Monkai" miriel said covering her mouth realizing she had fallen into zera's trap. "Still didn't answer my question.. "

"Yes your boyfriend will be there. Its his party. You should go... I hear there are cookies and mother won't be there" zera said nudging her shoulder .

"I don't know I have to be at the archives early tomorrow and I'll just embarrass everyone."

Zera grabbed her head rubbing her knuckles in the sides of her head " your going end of story miri, I'll be damned if I go alone "

Miriel whined in pain pinching her sister's waist releasing her. "If I go will you finally move out my room..."

"I'm only leaving if A; I get a playmate or B; married. Your stuck with me little one. " zera teased followed by miriel hitting her with a pillow playfully telling her to get out
