Act 156: promotion

monkai collapsed in his bed, he had spent the past three days writing and experimenting with his new power. He wrote down notes on how he could tap into his magic amplifying it for a short time. His relationship with the spirit possessing him had improved she allowed him to talk to other women without punishment long as he didn't make eye contact.

He pulled his book from his pack turning the pages to the last entry "symbiote " it said. A term he had coined for himself to cope with his condition. He planned on having it published despite his master would take a considerable portion of his royalties. He heard a knock on his door,it was even tempered,neither polite nor rude.

Monkai opened the door to see cassia clad in dark red velvet, he rarely interacted with her ,she had a scowl that mirrored his and her eyes made him uncomfortable. "Well I'm not one for trysts during daytime" he said joking to light her mood. Cassia merely stood silently unamused by him.

"Your presence is requested at auditorium in the south wing. Wear these and do not be tardy laetan " she said giving him a enclosed package and leaving. Monkai knew from their conversation that they would either kill each other or she would kill him.

Monkai looked in the mirror gazing upon his new robe. It was bigger than his normal size,the Hood covered his entire head. "I look like a jester... " he said looking at himself. He remembered those very words with kara. He laughed fighting back tears. "When will I be able to move on"

He looked in the mirror grabbing the arm of his robe and tore off the arm doing the same for the other. He cut the waist off forming a vest. He looked like he did he was a child only taller. "Much better. Best to bring a bit of eastern charm to the engagment " he said burning the edges of his shoulders.

The auditorium was loud the guests gossiped about the gathering wondering why they had been summoned. Zera and miriel stood by the wall, she drinking and Miriel hiding behind her hood..

"Can I leave...they see I'm not a mage.. I think they are talking about me. " miriel whispered nervous about being out her room after curfew

Zera took a obnoxious gulp from her glass complaining how her father only drank wine and never had liqueur at his events. "You'll be fine miri just wait til your boyfriend shows up and play kissy-face " she teased her sister laughing as she pulled her hood more.

"Your so mean..." she said.

"But you loves you most?" Zera said pulling her hood back. She had applied purple mascara and a light shade of red lipstick imported from orlais on to Muriel before they arrived, she looked beautiful, her blue eyes matching her attire.

"You love me the most" miriel said pouting at how her sister played at their bond.

"Nope your boyfriend! " zera said pointing to monkai who entered the hall, ackwardly bumping into the guests. "Makers breath.. just a unsociable fool.. they are perfect for each other" she thought. Zera whistled to him calling him over.

"Kay he's a boy your a girl use your charms " zera coached pulling her robe slightly to show skin.

"But they aren't as big as your he won't notice... maker he's coming this way... what do I do " miriel said panicking, she felt the underside of her arms become moist with sweat.

Monkai bowed to them careful not to make direct eye contact. "Lady vaellinous and younger lady vaellinous good evening ". He said his tone polite but a tinge of sarcasm. He looked at miriel who looked heavy with fever "are you alright kid"

Miriel looked up to him. He was a few inches taller than her, his robe was ragged and fashioned into a vest, she saw his tattoos a snake eating it's own tail on each of his arms. She stuttered trying to find the right words "nO I'm.. I'm fffine " she said her voice cracking. Zera chuckled only for miriel to step on her toes.

Monkai leaned onto her pressing his head against her's miriel felt blood build up in her nose. "Well your not feverish.. but I have some herbs that can help. "

"You'll do nothing of the sort." Cassia said appearing out of thin air. She shoved monkai aside with a staff made of silverite,standing before her sisters. "Miriel it's past your curfew.. and aren't you grounded " she said to them her voice sounding like their mother's. Miriel felt exposed and naked.

"Only tried to help miss scowl " monkai said. Cassia's eye twitched at what he had done to his attire

"What is that... I told you to dress nice laetan " she said masking her frustration as indifference.


Caius stompped his staff on the marble floor the sound echoing drawing attention to him. "Apprentices I've called you here to this special night for one who has shown promise and talent. He walks among you blending in but distinct in his manner. He has kept me informed of your progress,and I decree it is time to reward his loyalty. Step for monkai of house ragin " caius said his voice booming with authority.

Monkai swore under his breath at being summoned like a dog. Thinking if he was to be rewarded for spying on others he should've done it in private like all their past dealings. He stepped up the stairs kneeling before his master, "you called oh great magister" he said facetiously

Caius breathed deeply monkai could feel his annoyance it brought him a smile to his face knowing behind his methodical exterior he was a mortal beyond his comparison. "I promote you to house vaelinous's first enchanter leader of arcane research and defense. Bring glory to my house and you will have everything " caius said his voice mixed with pride and intrigue,curious to see how monkai would aide him in his plans

Act 157: master of the monster

monkai had entered caius's office, he had been summoned from his duties at the circle by one of his apprentices being told it was a important message. He found the office barren of his master he opened the drawers in his desk looking for something to read be it smut or any of his notations.

"Well well what do we have here a month being our first enchanter and already trying to rob us" zera said twisting a strand of her hair. She had a dubious smile as she walked to the desk.

"I was looking for snacks honest" he joked sliding the drawer back in place. He took a few steps back, he had found her to be difficult to be near.

"Uh huh. So what brings you snooping around my father's office. Planning to betray us." Zera said dragging her hand across the desk.

"You first I understand your supposed to be locked in your room, for a previous transgression" monkai said circling to her back. His eye caught her rear and he could help but want to see her nude. STOP LOOKING AT HER LIKE THAT YOU HAVE ME! LOOK AT ME! Scorn shouted her voice made monkai drop to his knees in pain holding his head.

Zera rushed to him kneeling before him. "Monkai are you alright!" She said her voice racked with concern.

Monkai swatted her hand as she reached to touch him "it's just a headache.. I'll be fine" he said staggering to the door "I promise just mind your business... please"

He bumped into caius's chest as he walked out the office. "If you have a headache boy my daughter is a skilled healer. Perhaps you should let her help." Caius said placing his hand on him escorting him back in the office.

Caius took his seat folding his hands staring at zera and the incapacitated first enchanter. "Master ragin please stand upright when I talk to you.. I will instill some sense of respect in you." He said his voice calculating. " I have called you both here to discuss something quiet important."

"And what will you ask of us father" zera said her voice dropping it calviliear tone and instead one of respect.

"Yeah what's the job..." monkai said clenching his head still in pain refusing zera's hand to help.

Caius sighed at his protege's stubbornness for aid. He admired pride, self reliance, willfullness but despised stupidity and refusal for aid. "Zera I've noticed your skills in combat magic to be lacking. While I admire your determination to study the healing arts, a vaellinous must always be well rounded. I have decided to change your instructor to master ragin. "

Monkai groaned at having another duty to perform ,adding to his shrinking free time. " Do I get a increase in my salary? "Monkai said sarcastically knowing the answer would be no.

"Understood father when do I begin " zera said her voice still respectful but laced with a tinge of frustration.

"After I have a word with master ragin. I have specific regime in mind" caius said dismissing her.

Caius waited til he was sure zera out of ear shot when spoke to monkai. His face was penetrating, monkai felt the world go heavy as if the weight of the manor fell on him. "What the... " monkai asked buckling under caius' magic. "When did he cast a spell... his hand were in the same place the whole time" monkai thought

"Just a test my young friend... one your failing." Caius chuckled as he watch monkai kneel. "I know what you are young man... "

"What a half tevinter apostate reclaiming his inheritance... kinda late to the party " monkai said collapsing under the invisible weight, he felt his bones splinter

Caius let out a hardy laugh "no not that I looked into that thoughly... it legitimate. But I was referring to what you really are ... I am a magister of tevinter! I have twenty years of your experience, did you really think I wouldn't notice you were possessed. And you had the gall to foolishly write down your findings!"

Monkai felt numb as caius revealed his secret but he just laughed as his eyes began to change to green and orange "well geezer you caught me plan on killing me. And for the record I prefer the term symbiote." He said rising to his feet only buckling slightly as caius added more pressure on him.

"And the difference is?" Caius said snapping his finger applying more pressure on to him causing him to kneel.

Monkai struggled to move inching step by step to caius grabbing his collar. " I am in control always I have none of the drawbacks but all of the benefits. So if your going to kill me best do it while I sleep cause I will defend myself " monkai said staring his master down. bastard thinks he's so smug but we are better a thousandfold Scorn added pour her power into him.

Caius merely laughed at the display, amused by his new project clapping with pride. "Most impressive boy so you are a medium and not some blowhard or liar. You passed my test, your raw, impulsive, insolent, and frankly an stubborn *******. But you have potential, I seek talent over race, ideology, ethnicity and you lad are most talented. " caius said his voice confident and in control

Monkai released him dropping him in his chair as his eyes reverted back to their normal colours " I could have killed you... still can geezer "

"Hehe I doubt that boy... One you'd lose everything... and two.. it's not in your nature. You lack the resolve to murder in cold blood. Doing so will prove what you fear most in the world... that your a monster." Caius said folding his hand smirking at monkai's face.

Monkai felt hollow as he realized he had fallen into caius' web he showed his power in anger ,revealed himself a monster and found he was owned by caius.. he was now a slave to him to serve him lest he would be exposed.

Caius noticed his horror and chuckled "Don't fret boy... the choice is yours.. join me and have everything... stand against me and you lose everything "

Act 158: complications

Zera tapped foot impatiently awaiting her instructor he was late again, she had trained with monkai for weeks refining her skills . She cursed under her breath at her father decision to dictate her training "I graduated from the circle, passed their tests and father's yet he still treats me as a incompetent apprentice " she thought to herself grunting in frustration. "First feros then my education... maker help me"

Monkai entered the training room tripping on the steps as he entered. "Apologies Milady I was held up. "

"Late is late monkai... but let's just begin." Zera said rubbing her head and moving to the dummy.

"Actually today we will be learning staff combat. " monkai said drawing his staff, it had a topaz coloured orb in the center and the stave was made from silverite. Cassia had given it to him as a status symbol as being house vaellinous's first enchanter and interim first enchanter of the circle. He twirled his staff breaking the wind and watching the leylines dance around him.

"Rivaini I think I'm going to going to enjoy this lesson" zera said picking up a staff from the rack, intending to release her frustrations on her tutor.

Monkai blocked her strikes anticipating each strike, they were wild and full of emotion "less aggression more control " monkai said pushing her back.

Zera breathed deeply annoyed by his advice, knowing he was right "less defense more aggression " she replied to him pressing her attack. Monkai found himself blocking her blows that cracked his staff. careful beloved if she touches us I'll be most displeased said distracting him from his foe. Zera struck him in his stomach making him drop his staff, she broke her staff against his chest and kicked him to the ground. Zera grabbed his staff pinning monkai to the ground.

Her hair fell from her face as monkai was pinned to the ground "I win... master" she said. The room became tense and charged, zera felt his member bump her crouch. "Pervert"

"Apologies.. I just get off on beautiful girls that best me in combat" monkai said pushing her off. He walked to his pack pulling a vial from drinking it.

"What is that" zera as asked incredulously

"Magebane... it keeps me centered after sparring... " he said putting the vial back.

"I know good tavern if you need centering... you rarely leave your room"

"... I'm a poor drinking companion... perhaps another time "

"Think of it as escorting a lady through the seedier parts of the city."

Monkai watched zera drink glass after glass of liquer, he wondered if she was human the way she held her liqueur. "Take it easy Milady I'd rather you not die on my watch" he said taking a sip of his glass of rum that had gone flat.

"Hush I'm twenty one and I'll do as I please" she said filling her's and monkai's glasses . "So master rivaini, have one special" she asked

Monkai poured another vial into his drink chugging it in one gulp "best you don't know me like that. I'm not the best at relationships"

Zera poured them another round intent to get to know her tutor and her sister's crush. She had known him for six months and the only thing she knew of him was that he was a rivaini of tevinter descent of dead house, that lived in her father's manor. She was determined to get answers.

Her vision blurred as monkai carried her from the tavern both both more drunk than they ever been. Zera smiled as he talked about rivain and how his politics where challenged since moving here. She had succeeded in cracking the grumpy and gruff exterior.

"So let's gooish back to miplace "zera said holding on to him for support

"Buts weeish livez in da same place" monkai said laughing. His mind felt foggy wondering if drinking magebane silenced his other half.

"Shh just be a good mage and walk me home "

They creapt inside the manor stifling their laughter as they made their way to zera's room. Monkai followed her into her room, he scanned the room seeing it covered with Griffin dolls and other memorabilia. Even in his giddy drunken state he found her obsession odd.

"I really like Griffins... theus ares so cute " zera said taking off her coat.

"Theys are extinct you know.." he said turning to leave "I'll be going now I have a meeting to- " he said only to be met with a kiss from a drunk zera

"I gotta inch that needs scratchin care to help.." zera said pressing her body against his. Monkai fully expected another headache but felt nothing ,for the first time in months he felt silence."Milady... "

"Zera or z... is what I prefer monkai.. Milady is my mother" zera corrected him finding it ruined the mood.

"Apologies... zera, your drunk and I'm definitely drunk let just pretend the kiss never happened and.. " monkai said trying to do the responsible thing.

"Problem? Who'd know" zera said unbuckling his belt completely forgetting he was her sister's crush. "Just have to see for myself" she drunkly thought as she knelt down and stared at the girth of his member. She stroked gently at first, then licking the tip and finally fellating him.

Monkai stopped resisting it had been half a year since he had sex and to his knowledge had no one but Scorn, he was drunk and she was drunk.. "let caius find out in the morning" he thought believing he earned a break from the lies he told, lies he started to believe

Act 159: betrayal

Miriel danced with monkai letting him guide with grace. She blushed her lowered her, his face inches away from here's. "You the most beautiful eyes" he said seductivly brushing the tip of his nose against her's.

"As do you..." she said nervously she found it difficult to breath with him being so close,she closed her eyes and kissed him awkwardly. Monkai stroked blonde hair from her lip,hair been caught in the deed.

"I loved you since the moment we met .." monkai pressing his lips against hers, miriel's heart jumped hearing his word, feeling safe she pulled him to the table letting get on top of her kissing his neck.

"I love you too " she said as he entered her and her mind going blank

Miriel swore at how she awoke hitting her bed waking up at the good part of her dream. "No more dreaming I'm going to tell him and then have a bunch of children. " she said clenching her first.

She scanned the room looking for her sister, seeing the bed still made from yesterday. It was odd to see her sister up before her. Miriel pushed the issue from her mind ,getting ready for her confession

Monkai and zera laid together in bed waking as the sun blinded them.

"Ugh my head.." zera said conjuring mana, she felt a cool breeze as her hangover receded she looked at her bedmate as he did the same.

"Remind me to never drink with you again... or at least not so much " monkai said rubbing his head. His memory of the night was hazy, he remembered drinking with zera and discussing politics finding they had a lot in common and she was patient with his avoidance of questions relating to him never pressing him for more information more than once.

"This was a one time thing right" he asked feeling the awkwardness in the room. Zera realized what she had done her face in horror and regret when she heard her door open.

"Hey zera! I'm going to the circle to- " miriel said covering her mouth in shock. She saw her sister and monkai in bed together, her sister covering herself.

"Miri... this isn't what it looks like!" Zera pleaded as her sister stood, her face losing colour. "Mon..kai.. and... sister.. in bed... no I'm still dreaming she'd never do that to me.." miriel thought to herself.

Zera took her robe and covered herself walking toward her. Miriel swatted her hand away and ran from the room with zera screaming after her.


Monkai merely stared at confusion to what just occurred "okay so what just happened"

Act 160: friction

zera called out to miriel to stop. Miriel ran down the stair pushing cassia out of the way.

"Hey!" She shouted as zera pushed her aside again. She ignored them and went back to her task.

"Miriel wait I can explain " zera said stopping to catch her breath she had always been faster but miriel was surprisingly fast.

Miriel stopped in her tracks turning to her sister. Her face was red with anger and jealousy, "how could you... I told you... and yet you knew... I TRUSTED YOU!" Miriel shouted pushing her sister.

Zera looked at her younger sister, she was hurt by her betrayal she was at a loss for words "I'm sorry it's just sex nothing came of it.. yeah that will go well" she thought.

Miriel threw her hands in frustration "SAY SOMETHING! " she cried hitting her sister.

Zera held her sister while she pounded her chest. "We were drunk I didn't plan for it to happen honest I would never hurt you. Believe me" she said holding miriel tighter.

Miriel broke free from her sister and slapped her. "Your always drunk that's your excuse for everything you do! For once in your life take responsibility " she shouted.

Zera rubbed her face feeling the bruise forming "ever thought maybe it was what he wanted and getting drunk was the only way.."

Miriel's face went solemn at her sisters words and zera realized she went too far as she ran from the house with zeta giving chase again.

haha no caius sent away feros zera's ex . miri didn't care for him likeshe said he was a jerk apparently. and i dont remember kai dissing her (not counting sleeping with her sister) . monkai actually likes the kid seeing her as a genuine friend

 

and im curious to how miri will react to pub's duplicity and if monkai will break his knees lol

Publius+Cassia would make a better match, temperamentally, but I think he isn't highborn enough for her. I wonder what became of the engagement between her and Batzas? Everyone got too busy with other plots!

 

I could swear Miri's friend got sent to the front, but maybe I'm mixing up the sisters. Or Caius has a habit of shipping off suitors!

And yeah zera 's bf got shipped off miri 's only suiter is pub. Its partly how zeraXMonkai met he's a backdrop at best.(to my knowledge ). I honestly expect hilarity if pub tried to woo cassia it would be like SNL

Act 161: business and worry

monkai sat at his desk in the circle still embarrassed by being caught by miriel after his tryst with zera. He wasn't modest about himself but the look in her face she gave him made him consider moving out of the manor's apprentice wing and into his own. so I hope you intend to apologize to me for that indiscretion Scorn echoed. Monkai found it easy to suppress her attacks on him after spending the night with zera. He heard a knock his door opening to reveal a red haired woman clad in leather, her hands were covered I grease.

"First enchanter I've finished replacing the locks on the winery. I also found you carried a exquisite brand. Would it be possible to procure a bottle." The woman said polity bowing to her employer.

Her name was Alessandra Valentius, a artificer and leader of a small craftsman guild he had contracted to increase security at the circle. He didn't trust mages to handle locks and more mundane details believing them to leave flaws easily exploited. "Thank you milady I appreciate your service" he said pulling a small box from his desk.

"My pleasure " she said opening the box showing her payment and a bottle of the circles wine. She smirked thinking it was uncanny that he knew she'd wanted the bottle. "Well aren't you a cheeky mage conjuring wine at request " alessandra joked.

Monkai raised his eyebrow "what... I was going to give it anyway... what do you?" Monkai said puzzled then laughing finally getting her her joke. "Clever "

She thanked him for the bottle declining to share it with her as she left. Monkai smiled at how his life had changed staring out his window.

"What do you mean miriel still hasn't come home! "Cassia shouted to zera shaking her.

"We had a fight... and I lost her in the market." Zera said her voice heavy with concern.

"What did you do..." cassia demanded. Zera didn't answer due to shame and regret for what she had done. Cassia shook her head frustrated by the lack of answers. "Father will be back tomorrow from mother's. Best to find her before his return... but I will demand answers."

Zera nodded in agreement telling her sister the last she saw her

Act 162: misunderstanding

miriel walked through the night holding out her hand noticing the rain had stopped. She walked into a alley and sat in the mud,staring at the sky as the clouds dispersed. "She isn't looking for me... she doesn't care.. no I should apologize... no I shouldn't. I'm in the right" she said arguing with herself still heartbroken. She played in the mud drawing a face smiling at her.

Cassia watched zera ran wildly looking for their sister, she asked the shopkeepers and vendors if they had seen a girl matching her description. Cassia merely sighed at their situation pulling a pipe from her sash filling it with kohl and mint and listing it's contents. She found it a dirty habit to partake in courtesy of her sister but it helped her think. "Where are you... "she said blowing smoke from her nose enjoying the minty aroma..

"Why are you just standing there! Move" zera cried to her sister noticing it was getting dark and beginning to to rain again.

Cassia chewed on her on the tip of her pipe, giving off a stoic aura and cocking her head. "Panicking won't help. Best to stay calm. She only knows three places; home,the archives and.. that tavern" she said inhaling her pipe, the embers glowed a menacing orange.

Zera wiped her face and shouted. "Why did I sleep with him.. I shouldn't have done that" she thought to herself swiping Cassie's pipe smoking to steady her nerves.

"Best to move... I have reading to due.." Cassia said heading to the tavern.

Miriel ate at her table at the wh*re's gambit, she stirred her bowl of chowder it had grown thick and congealed hoping by stirring it would be normal. She looked a couple across from her they gossiped over wedding arraignments the smiles on their faces made her jealous.

"I should really head home...Cassia will be furious if she sees me covered in mud.." Miriel said taking a spoonful of her food. She felt a pat behind her back.

"Don't you have a curfew? " monkai said taking a seat across from her.

"Uh..."

"Hey I won't tell or ask why your covered in muck. Just head back." He said calling for a barmaid.

"How can he act like I didn't see them.. or how I.." miriel thought checking for her satchel to pay for her meal. "Uh..."

"Kids these days... " he joked pulling out a few coins for her. She smiled for the first time since she ran away.

"Um... I.. li" she said before hearing zera shouting for her.

"Miri! I've looked everywhere for you" zera shouted hugging her sister. She noticed monkai sitting next to her they turned away blushing at the awkward moment.

"Great they are making like nothing happened" she thought pushing zera off her. "Thank you monkai for the meal.. I'll see you later.." she said walking off scowling at zera. "See you at home "

Monkai looked confused at what just happened. "Twice in one day something is up. " he thought as the bar maid brought him his cup and a bottle .

"Thanks for finding her.." zera said avoiding his inquisitive look.

"Whats going on between you two." He asked taking a drink from his cup.

"I did something horrible.. she won't forgive me.." she said taking a seat holding her face. Monkai poured her a drink filling the cup to the brim.

"I'll listen but no sex " he said.

"Deal... " she said downing the entire glass in one gulp

Act 163: understanding

zera stared at her drink awkward silence sat between her and monkai who looked like he was in pain. "I understand your a medium... your headaches... is it common for those like to have them" she asked curious to know more of her friend.

Monkai rubbed his head "it will pass don't fret so much on it." He said putting on a false smile. go on lie to her some more... tell her what she wants to hear... stroke her ego... Scorn echoed applying more pain into his brain. He felt like was going to vomit
