I don't mind the option to go 1st person.  I have zero interest in seeing it go a mandatory 1st person.  If a toggle isn't an option, it needs to stay 3rd person.

Is that the best way to immerse? For me

it helps to see the character interact with the environment, to help feel it

working?

Not for me.  I respect that though.  If ME:A could be as good

as COD, that'd be awesome!  Fast-paced, action packed, so

many things going on all at once!  The 3rd person POV really

tears through my immersion a lot of the time.

As far as an option to toggle it, I'd be all for that.  The variety,

I would most certainly welcome.  TBH, it's a request I never

predicted would go anywhere.  I just wanted to ask & discuss.

If they make it first person then it will be time to put ME in the bin.

I saw what happened when they tried to make Mass Effect a first person.

I was not impressed.

--------------------

If they had the toggle option for a first person I'd still be iffy. . .Unless we get VR support and then you get first person KROGAN HEADBUTTING ACTION! SWING HEAD VIOLENTLY TO HEADBUTT. MRAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH-

which wouldn't be at all viable since that's also how you look around and all that. I'd rather they focus more on making the core gameplay the best it can be before worrying about perspectives. . .really, gameplay should be designed based around the perspective.

Deus Ex: HR integrated both well enough but the sudden shift could be jarring and annoying.

--------

I'm with you in regards to 'First Person Immersion' but I don't think Mass Effect is a good fit for that type of camera, at least not in the state its gameplay is in. . .maybe if they had made the jump earlier in the series (AKA after ME1) I could see it working and even then-

I agree wholeheartedly OP. Further, the main character's name should be Ramirez, and he should do everything. The plot should involve defending Burger Town from illegal aliens.

To return to this thread, I think a hybridized view, similar to the aforementioned Human Revolution and in the popular Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 would be the better approach rather than a full-on First Person Mode, should a first person toggle option be featured.

The reason for this is that Mass Effect, like the prior two games, features abilities and functions that would be jarring, difficult, or otherwise tedious to utilize in a purely first-person view. Spliting animations off would reduce that load, methinks, and prevent bad camera angles for certain maneuvers or abilties:

Human Revolution has special abilities, like Mass Effect, that would look rather strange from a purely first person viewpoint. Primarily I am referring to the slowfall and the Typhoon weapon system. It also pulls the camera out to third person for cutscenes to make better use of expressions and actions. It also makes use of third person for moving about in 'hard' cover (actually taking cover with proper animations, versus soft cover of just standing behind something) and in special melee attacks, both of which Mass Effect also uses.

Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 also uses a third person for cover, but also does so for certain certain cutscenes (namely the intro to certain helicopter missions, essentially Third Person in Vehicles), and movement such as Rappelling down buildings. Otherwise, gun play is in first person.

. . .Can you imagine using Biotic Charge in first person? That sudden movement is guarented to cause disorientation, especially with biotic explosions and all those other special effects like screen shaking, magical blue pops. . .and wouldn't those heavy melee attacks look cooler if the camera pulls back out to third person? (See: Krogan Charge, Destroyer Stomp, Asari AoE Burst, ETC). . .Can you imagine sync-kills in first person though? I swear, Banshee ones would be creepy but Husk grabs would get annoying after awhile.

---------

Let's not forget that animations have to look good in third person AND first person (and camera would have to vary because the races, while using the same animation skeleton, have much different shapes). Most first person games take some awkward shortcuts since the perspective is set.

Dying Light did a good job as a full-on first person game, and features multiplayer so other people can see your movements. Games that feature a toggle between the two sometimes have some rather. . .wonky moments, especially when they try to implement it after animations are made specifically for third person. Grand Theft Auto V did a. . .decent job of adding a First Person Mode in later, but it wasn't the greatest.

You can't just slap a new camera on and expect everything to work right. Visual clipping will happen for cutscenes and animations so things have to be made with that in mind (with the racial size/shape matter this becomes more of an issue for multiplayer in particular). With all this said, here's what I think would be the best way to implement a hybridized camera mode:

Actions that can take place in First Person:

- Basic Movement (includes ladders for this)
- Basic Gunplay and Basic Melee attacks (including basic combos. All races now have the basic three-gun slap combo.)
- Non-dramatic Powers (Ex. Warp, Throw, Concussion Shot, Grenade powers, Nova, Armor detonations, ETC)
- Non-cutscene conversations (generic NPC banter, non-important trigger conversations that don't do zoom-ins)

Actions that must take place in Third Person:

- Mako (there's no windows on it!)
- Complex Movement (Hard Cover, Rappelling, ETC)
- Dramatic Powers (Smash, Biotic/Havok Charge, any ability with complex/dramatic movements that are more interesting to watch)

- Heavy Melee attacks (I'd swap out Krogan Headbutt to standing heavy melee while retaining Krogan Charge to running heavy melee. First person headbutts would be- yeesh.)

- All Cutscenes and Cutscene-style conversations.

NOOOOOOOOO, definately not.

Bioware, pleeeeease don't change the formula to appease a very small minority.

The ME franchise has been doing just fine and definately dosen't need to be changed.

Cheers

Ya I was going to say that but I wasn't too sure  if it was true or not

And Bethesda's third person control really sucked, too. My vote is for Bioware to leave their third person perspective alone. It's just fine as it is.

Really? Because I think this changes a lot more than being able to pause or unpause. TP vs FP influences how we navigate the environment, aim at enemies, take cover, melee mechanics, customization. And all you're concerned about is the pause? This is going to be an action RPG, not Baldur's Gate in space.

This is an RPG with a great story not some dumba/sz  first person/3rd person shooter with little to no desire to finish the story or just be playing around and shooting things up. This topic is ridiculous.

To be fair it became less RPG and more Shooter with every game. So this idea of making it first person actually happening scares me, given the pattern we've seen.

Mass Effect is already too much of a shooter for my own taste, and the only thing a first person view does for me is distance myself from whatever those hands are doing. I want to see my character interact with the world, not floating hands doing stuff, so please no?

First person romance scenes please, for immersion.

Yeah... can we switch back and forth for that, too ? You know. For science.

Joking aside, I wish the game could stay a TPS. I love the shooter side of ME3, but not seeing my character 85% of the time would make me so sad :(
