Hello all! I hope you have been well. Everyone keeping up with things these days?
So this truly doesn't belong in the mass effect mod area; however we all have some modding experience (and there are those here who are complete aces at it aka Fob, WV, etc). So I was wanting youe thoughts on something.
Back some time ago I got into basic videogame design within an engine. Nothing major; my math teacher thought it would be a good way for students to waste time in school way back. I learned 3 things: one, it is doable, but difficult. 2, its a lot of work and 3 you need a good team for anything worthwhile.
There is an old Star Wars game that is near and dear to my heart. KOTOR 1 to be exact.
Unfortunately, the more I play it, the more the graphics\animations are showing their age.
I know that the engine that the game runs on is ancient. I truly have my doubt's that it could ever look nice by modern standards even if people went all out.
Which led me to a rather crazy idea some months ago that I can't shake. If there were enough dedicated people, I am wondering if it would be possible to make a "mod" that upgrades the graphics and animations onto a new engine. The Unity engine comes to mind; it is easy to work with design wise, and licensing is not too terrible (though given it is a "mod" hopefully that would undershoot the radar). Essentially, keep the story, UI (maybe), voice acting, dialogue, level design, and battle/balancing system. And change the graphics/ animation.
I know what I am thinking is difficult/crazy/halfway impossible, but that aside, i was wondering on your thoughts on the matter and if anybody might know of a people\ community that might be interested in pursuing it at some point (crowd source work is a wonderful thing). Having talked with some of my friends, they would love it if such a game existed.
Anyway, I look forward to being brought back to reality. Cheers!

Thank goodness for email reminders or I would have missed this for months.

Whew...I don't think I'm game. And I loved KOTOR. Freak'n sweet. First taste of a Bioware game for me; although Mass Effect has replaced Star Wars as my favorite sci-fi.

Anyway, while I loved that game, I don't think I'm up for the challenge. It's brutal, as you know, just to edit within a game. To actually attempt a move into a new engine; I'm out. Obviously not impossible but I have a hunch it would require quite a team of people working full-time to pull off. Even if something simple like the assets and animations couldn't be exported it's pretty much over before it begins. You'd still want those blocky models as a base from which to work.

Do what I do...have the great memories and leave it be. I remember this game (I'm old) and would never play it again. But I have to say that Assassin's Creed Black Flag is bringing back those memories. That game is just a blast.

But it's tough. You either live with the bad graphics or give up on the game. I like to look for replacements. Some day I'll be done with Mass Effect even....some day. ;) Not there yet though. I made that Extended Cut to Citadel DLC mod for myself, really. I have plans for a Control freak total jerk femshep.

Unfortunately... I didn't have email notifications :P hence the late reply. anyway, thanks for your input Deager. Yeah I do realize it would take a team; I have no illusions when it comes to the shear size. Maybe it's just a pipe dream, but I would kill to play KOTOR looking like something in unreal 4.
Unfortunately, until star wars gets a new RPG (not the mmo that they keep trying to sell) I will probably continue to play Kotor on an annual basis.
Maybe as tools get more advanced and user friendly, maybe making a mod like this won't be so hard one day.
On the plus side, mass effect 4 next year (please BW don't make it suck)
Cheers!
