Face Code for Import *sigh*

Well, I google'd around looking for the answer to this and I thought I had it, but it wasn't working.

Apparently ME2 won't generate a face code for an imported character. What I got from the google machine was that it will if you select Custom and then go back to the import. I tried that because I want to change a few things, but the face code it generated is for the default femshep.

Is that right, and am I just kind of screwed and/or looking at trying to recreate the face from scratch? (Assuming I want to put the effort in.)

I've read that clicking CUSTOM while importing, even if you don't do anything with it, is what screws it up, actually. And that did happen to me, as well. It generated a facecode, but it was not the proper one. When I then imported my character into ME3, it looked nothing like the original. I think that what you can try is just import, leave the face as it is, not click anything else, and then hope it'll import into ME3. (Unfortunately, you won't know whether it worked until you try to import it into ME3, which totally sucks.) My friend managed to pull that off. His custom femShep translated perfectly throughout the whole franchise. However, if I remember correctly, his manShep didn't, curiously enough. I don't know whether he did anything differently on that one.

To be honest, what I started to do is that I take screenshots of my ME1 slider settings and then use them in ME2. Or make a character the way I like it in ME3 and then use that facecode and slider settings for the other games.

There might be a way to fix this through Gibbed, perhaps. I haven't looked into that yet.

Yeah, I tried looking in Gibbed for a face code and it's just blank. And I didn't take screenshots from my ME1 sliders, so I don't know how well I could recreate her. I just want a few changes for ME2 right now, but having a face code to actually use in ME3 would be super perfect and totally make my day.

Ahh, that sucks. Shame this issue was never fixed. I know that some changes can be done with Gibbed on existing characters, so some tweaks are probably still possible, although I don't know how hard that would be doing it "blind" like that. This tutorial looks very interesting: http://masseffect.li...com/656484.html, but also like a pain in the rear, somewhat. But maybe you've seen it already. Sorry if it's redundant.

yeah, ME1 didn't come with its import code. I found out about this while playing my second Shepard and she came with a new imported overbite and huge neck... I just play the import and then in ME3.. it screw up mightily.... that's why nowadays I started with creating a character from ME3 and backtracking it for ME1. Less pain.

If you're playing it on PC, you can play it on windowed mode and find a screencap of your ME1 character and then try to replicate it. You can recreate it from scratch as long as you remember the major features of your character; head structure, eyes type, nose type, mouth type.

True. Luckily, some of the features are easily recognisable. I can very easily recognise my Shepard's eyes and nose in all three games, for example. Lips, not so much. They seem quite different in each game. But it's still better than nothing. However, exactly as you say, it's just better to start building new characters from ME3. I've also found the Mass Effect Face Code Converter quite useful while going back to ME1.

I'll have to start with ME3 on my next runthrough. Although, I do have trouble with the eyes in ME3. The eyelashes are so strange and the eye shadow is so light I have no idea what color I'm choosing.

I think the number of changes make the import problematic because I can import my femshep without trouble, with only some minor changes like the eye shadow color.

I changed only the hair, the makeup and the eye color in ME1. I touch nothing else. I didn't have much change and or a big problem when I imported her to ME2 and ME3.
I can put pictures if you like.

Hmmm... I remember I spent so many hours around this problem... I know I used Gibbed Editor a lot. A very very lot.

And yep, I remember than even with Gibbed, an imported face would never ever generate a face code :(

I still ave so many screens and notepads filled with codes and RGB values and vectors and... pfffiou...

Your ME2 Shep looks very good though, I am not sure you could come closer :)

I used to manually count each notch (starting from all the way to the left) and saved it in a notepad for ME1. That's how I reused/adjusted faces. Like this old code I found:

"Facial structure: 8, 3, 2, 0

Head: 5, 5, 10, 20, 0, 15, 20

Eyes: 0, 30, 20, 5, 15, 10, 8

Jaw: 20, 0, 25, 10

Mouth: 3, 0, 0, 19, 13

Nose: 11, 10, 20"

Extra work, but it was helpful for importing. :D It'd translate perfectly to the ME2 sliders, except for the makeup, since there's more makeup in ME2. It sorta worked for ME3 also, but I ended up just making a new face from scratch for that game because the facial structure is way different.

Looks like you mostly got it figured out though. Pretty Shepard!

There is a way and I am trying to remember how to do it.  There is a program that pulls slider data from a saved game that you can then use to create your face in ME2 using custom.  It isn't perfect but it gets it pretty darn close, I had no trouble fine tuning the look.  I believe the program I am thinking of was created to help with the fubar the face import into 3 was.  Though to be fair my recreated Shep looked pretty much the same as the very first time I imported her.  Anyways I am out of time tonight I will look for this tomorrow if no one else points the way first.

I helped a redditor yesterday to make her ME3 look more like her ME2 character. Her code import is disastrous but she's doable...

Not really a fan of the hairstyle but I think she turns out right.

There used to be a service\utility tool, which recalculated both imported ME2 face-code (other than few missing sliders) AND ME1 original slider positions. I've used it myself to recreate my ME1 custom face for a fresh non-NG+ run. Unfortunately, I can't remember the URL, and I'm not even sure that it still lives.
There had also been some sort of 'manual' way to recollect the data, but I was fortunate enough to use that tool. I think one of the ME2 facecode DBs had hosted it, but I can't remember which one.

Also, ME2 face-code per se does not help with the ME3 auto-import accuracy. The shapes, textures and lighting differ too much. I ended up with heavy tweaking my ME1\2 face in ME3 CC + some minor gibbed tweaks (like colours, removing the gloss and moving up the 'eternal sad face' lip corners). Threre is also a tool called 'Lazarus', that was supposed to import the 'raw' ME2 headmorph data into ME3 save. Unfortunately, it does not work well with some faces. It did not work for me, but it's still worth to try it.

Here's my customShep's headmorph  'progression' for those who are interested:

Ok I found the site but it does link to other pages and I didn't check to see if they are still active.   Also the site address has a rather obscene (considered by most anyways) word right in the title so I don't think copy and pasting it would be wise.  And to top it off I am failing to find a way to just make it one of those click me links so if anyone can offer up how to do that that would be great.

Is it one of the "effyeahmasseffect" sites? Because if so you can type "this site" without quotes, highlight the text, click the hyperlink button at the top, then paste the url in.

This site

Why yes it is that site so if you already know about it I guess you have tried it and it didn't work?  There might be others out there the key search word is YAML I am pretty busy today with work or I would do a better job searching.  I am no expert but if you have any questions I will do my best to help and thank you so much for showing me how to do the hyper linking!  Thumbs up for you

Ok that last link won't work since you need the ME2 save editor and that link is dead which is to bad that is the way I did it and it worked great.  If you have the time and patience you can try this site it does work but a lot more time consuming.  Will will need Gibbed save editor but that is easy to find.
