What the title asks. Are there any good single player RPGs with a super hero theme? I'd like to play something like that. Personally, I think it would be awesome if we had one with Jade Empire (Or the Arkham games) style combat with different power sets and abilities we could purchase on level up. Add in Bioware style companions ala Jade Empire or Mass Effect who serve as sidekicks or super team-ups, a strong villain/nemesis and some real choice and consequences and it would be an amazing game.

Single player RPGs? Not that I can think of.

A few MMOs (City of Heroes, DC Universe Online, etc.) but they were all light on the story. Freedom Force from back in 2002 was kind of a cool superhero game, but not really what I would classify as an RPG, per se.

There are some limits to this. First, it's never been done. This may sound dumb, but an untested concept is something that wakes up most publishers in a cold sweat at night to think about. And if you don't have the publishers' money, it's very hard to make a cinematic game even on the scale of Jade Empire today.

Secondly, super heroes have some intrinsic roadblocks to implementing their powers. Developers spend entire game's budgets on getting the feel of a certain super heroes powers/abilities to feel "just right." Look at the Arkham games - it's taken years and multiple titles to make a game where Batman feels like Batman. And then look at the Hulk games in the past - they have ranged from terribly cartoony to actually capturing the pure power and rage of the character. Point being - superheroes have a ton of powers and abilities that would dramatically affect the gameplay. Making a game that lets you be The Flash, where you can zip around faster than a speeding bullet and also lets you be Green Lantern, which lets you create any object your mind can imagine, is quite hard to do. Outside of a turn-based combat system, I'd say it would be nearly insurmountable to tackle all the powers you'd need for your team and opposing super villains.

Thirdly, RPGs that deviate from the standard fantasy tropes don't typically do that hot. Even fewer that rest the success on good writing or companions, like Bioware is known for. And aside from Bethesda, no RPG is making over 10 million in sales. If a developer was going to create a super hero game, they'd either tether it to a film release to cash in that way or they would go the full-action route, such as the Marvel Ultimate Alliance games or the Arkham games. Being an RPG just doesn't make sense.

All of this being said, if you can scale back your expectations, you can check Kickstarter, Indiegogo (or even RPG Maker sites, if you would stomach a retro SNES style JRPG with superheroes) to see if there are any projects to fund a video game of this nature. Honestly, tabletops have put out many good, balanced super hero RPGs over the years, so someone should be able to make a video game-friendly ruleset that would be feasible. Still... if there is one out there, I haven't heard of it.

Freedom Force is the only one I can think of but it's not exactly the kind of RPG you're thinking of, OP.

I remember Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was pretty fun, but it wasn't really an RPG.

If you turn evil you can't be a superhero anymore, that's why superhero games are either action-adventure or action-whatever!

But I can think of this possibility: a RPG game like KOTOR with Dragon Ball Xenoverse gameplay (specialized for a superhero game)...  B)

Whatever... just label it as a superpower game!

Darksiders II had some RPG elements.

Not really superhero, but it does have a comic-book style (and one of the best video game soundtracks in recent memory).

They should really do an iconic-super-man (without any positive/negative meaning) rpg game, set in a contemporary world (same as ours or similar).

There was a similar project growing in Bioware, but it was going to be a MMO, and since it was going to fail hard (for reasons) they aborted it.

The first one was great.

Just don't get Prototype 2.

It's essentially angry black guy with powers simulator 2011. I had high hopes for the series as well :(

I thought that became Champions Online? Or did they decide to take another shot at getting a Marvel MMO off the ground?

Just play the inFamous games. They are incredibly fun. First 2 games, in particular.

Crackdown was quite possibly one of the best super hero games, it has RPG elements such as levelling up, and choosing which abilities you want your hero to have. However, it's really really light on story, and isn't actually an rpg. But other than Deus Ex, this is the best that comes to mind for me. I don't believe I've ever heard of a super hero RPG (other than a few mmos).

The X-Men Legends games were great. They had power progression, equipment/inventory, a wide variety of powers tied to the various characters. Sadly there was no real story choices and you were limited to predefined characters.

It did. I was just giving it as an example of a superhero MMO, which is an example of what the OP didn't want (they specifically asked for a single player RPG).

In what world are those RPGs?
