I feel a little overwhelmed with managing the Crossroad Keep; I mean it's cool that they tried to do something different, but I'd rather continue just going on adventures, exploring, fighting, solving puzzles, instead of playing a light strategy or managerial game with unclear rules, or studying long guides about it. And I fear I already approached it the wrong way, can anyone help me get back on track?

My problem is that I already spent nearly all of the funds on rebuilding the keep before I discovered that I actually can spend money on improving my troops' equipment, too. Now they are the best of the best and well trained but few and pathetically equipped, and I'm lacking the funds to improve their armor and weapons. I don't know when and how often I get my income from the keep and so far it's just about 3k, since I didn't dare to send my ill-equipped greycloaks to patrol roads and lands and I didn't dare to tax the merchants and peasants while my roads and lands are still severely lacking in security, so it feels a bit like a catch 22.

Also, whenever I go to Kana to try and change something, she already triggers a new event, and since I agreed to sent an elite force on a special mission (about a vengeful bandit brother called something "the Ogre"), Kana keeps saying "your men are currently tasked to capacity" - does that mean they're still occupied with the special mission and I shouldn't assign them anything else?

Apart from what I already did, are there any other ways to mess things up? Like rebuilding the keep too slowly or too quickly? What's that about keep time, for example?

Thanks for your help!

PS: Does it make sense to save my own money and equipment for the future, or will Mask of the Betrayer strip me of it anyway, so that it doesn't matter what I do with it in the OC? (Maybe post a spoiler tag to the reply, as this doesn't concern the OC only but also the expansion.)

As far as it seemed to me, the keep was put in as a fun little extra to spend your piles of gold on, not something you should stress about.  If you're not enjoying it, just go adventuring as you said and don't worry about it.  You already built all of the rooms, so nothing will be stopping the quest progression.  I took those little missions as little more than flavour.

I take it you haven't recruited any named lieutenants to go out on missions yet?

The game has quest entries that were never used that indicate that originally, which buildings you decided to build (wizard tower vs gambling den vs guard tower, etc.) would open up new side quests from those locations, so you could only do one set on each playthrough.  But those were cut, so it only affects shops and some minor bonuses.

I know you said you didn't want to deal with a guide, but this FAQ basically tells you what to do in order to get certain results.

Wow, how cool would that have been?  I hate hearing stuff like this when there is a fair amount of stuff in this game that I feel like you just end up slogging through for the sake of creating game hours.  It seems like some of that could have been cut in favor of something that would uniquely contribute to your choice of character class and would have added a lot of flavor to the task of building your keep.

I've never found myself being too concerned about such boring non-adventuring things as managing keeps (OC) or building merchant empires (SoZ). I'd rather be out in the world getting my hands dirty (or bloody, as the case may be) than to be stuck indoors dealing with administrative issues.

If given the choice between financial discussions on how to allot tax money [*snore*], or killing a dragon and looting its hoard, I'll always take the latter option. I didn't sign up as an adventurer for the chance to do paperwork!

Thanks for the replies! :)

So what about my last question? I read that MotB lets you keep everything your character equips apart from weapons, but not what you keep in your inventory. Does anyone know if you're stripped of your gold, too?

A quick test starting up MotB and importing a character reveals that you lose your gold.  I also lost my weapon, but that may be because I was wielding the Silver Sword of Gith.  My companion had some extra weapons, though, including some I could use, so it was fine.

You'll find a whole lot of quite expensive loot almost immediately, so providing you can find a merchant with a high maximum buying price (which should be just about *any* merchant in MotB) you should have lots of gold soon enough. Of course the things on offer for sale will also be quite pricey, so your riches might not last very long.

I've read that weapons don't carry over to MotB in general. Anyway, that's all good to know, because it means there's no sense in hoarding all the stuff and trying to save money in the OC. I might just as well sell all the loot and invest it in the keep then.

I haven't played MotB in ages, especially with an imported character, but I think you keep all your equipped gear except weapons.

Yes. Apparently after your impromptu surgery, someone went to the trouble of redressing you and putting your shield back in your off-hand (if your exported character was holding one).
