I'm wondering if this is how it should be or if it's some grafical error only few are getting.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE - Lots of love to Syklonis01 for this:

Go into your users folder, example...

C:\\Users\\yourname\\Documents\\BioWare\\Mass Effect 2\\BIOGame\\Config

open up the GamerSettings.ini and add this line under [systemsettings]

DepthOfField=False

OR if you don't want to eliminate depth of field entirely

Zen Shot wrote...

Go to Program Files/Mass Effect 2/Engine/Shaders

Open the "UberPostProcessBlendPixelShader.usf" with notepad++

Find the line "float3 x = max(0,InLinearColour-0.004)"

Change it to "float3 x = max(0,InLinearColour)"

Careful to edit with notepad+ and not with regulard notepad or it will corrupt the file by changing the file type. And make a backup before you mess with it =]

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread that is now 2 years old and still useful.

Well, the lighting is more realistic in this game, and in general, I've found the shadows to be greatly improved. In that screenshot it just looks like your character is silhouetted because of the bright lights directly behind him...looks normal to me.

EDIT: I ran all over that room trying to find the spot you stood in to make it that dark and you definitely picked the DARKEST spot in that whole room, but I can confirm that my screen looks exactly the same and I'm running with both the in-game settings and the Catalyst Control Center settings maxed out w/ a 5870...so pretty sure they're normal.

Okey, actually that screenshot is not a good example. This one maybe?

No character/armor features are visible on any of the characters.

You have a much less severe bug compare to what I have which is crashing to desktop each time I try to load galaxy map so I am basically stuck in Normandy in middle of nowhere.

I had to go into the options and turn my brightness to +2. At the zero setting, I couldn't see the N at all, and at +1 it was barely visible.

It really is a dark game. Shame too. I mean, I can understand "mood lighting' but this is more, "hide lighting' or. maybe. some would say, "bad lighting'

Here's a last pic with +5 contrast. I've painted my armor white too.

I still don't understand though, is the game like this for everyone or maybe it a graphic card issue?

To make it less dark and to me a better looking game...

Go into your users folder, example...

C:\\\\\\\\Users\\\\\\\\yourname\\\\\\\\Documents\\\\\\\\BioWare\\\\\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\\\\\BIOGame\\\\\\\\Config

open up the GamerSettings.ini and add this line under [systemsettings]

DepthOfField=False

Of course make a backup of your ini file before adding changes!!

The changes are on the top image the bottom is normal.

That just makes it look washed out to me.

Wow... I don't know if this comes to a matter of taste but I think the game looks soooo much better now. Judge for yourselves.

Compare it to the screenshot from my third post.

Thank you so much syklonis01!!!!

you're welcome..others won't like it. But honestly, the depth of filed is adding a very dark shadow to the game. If others don't agree, try the edit yourself and see for yourself.

Have you ever been to a club? Never expect good lighting in a club. Why are you posting screen shots of the darkest, most shadowy areas and asking why it's dark and shadowy?

must be where he's at in game...don't judge him on his screen-shot. Try the edit and see for yourself.

Anyone have an answer for Tavior's issue with the freeze on the galaxy map? Mine is crashing too.

Don't you think they could have provided a proper option for this, same as with the mouse speed issue? Is including user options costing them extra money these days, as they seem to be very shy at offering them to us.

Done it. That's much better.

Why put this stupid DepthOfField into the game if it makes the graphics look so rubbish?

This whole thing is a mess.

Please guys, those that don't have it, don't poo poo this. You're just giving Bioware an excuse not to fix it.

These black surfaces are saturating large areas a lot of the time.

The majority of faces that are in full shot.

Important objects and scenery. This isnt meant to look like this.

BIOWARE :

For some reason, shadows are bleeding way over the lines of where they should effect surfaces. So much so, that sometimes as you rotate in a poorly lit room, a black shape dances up and around the wall.

Somehow, some graphics cards (mine is 9400 GT Geforce with 512MB) are interpreting the settings, for depth of field, to quite an extreme.

Please give us some feedback on what you're doing, because you're breeching the sales agreement here. This game is not fit for purpose in its current condition.

Who put *** SOLVED *** On this? What a load of rubbish!

It still looks awful with the DepthOfField setting off.

Why should some of us have a second rate quality game just because Bioware cant program!?

Free game or money back Bioware.

If it's too much trouble to address this, you at least refund those you are not giving the full quality game to.

I agree with the opinion that with the depth of field on, it makes many scenes unbearably dark (maybe it is an nvidia issue, am using gtx 295). With depth of filed off it makes the scenes brighter, you can see the details of the armor but with a somewhat washed out look.

I really hope that Bioware QA or Support took issue with this and a fix is in the offing.

Well it did solve it for me... :wizard: Maybe it's a matter of perspective? I don't know, but the hard-black-nothing-visible shadows go away when you change the setting. If you don't like it that is another issue =].

Yes, i used it for quite some time with the setting off, but it does look terribly washed out.

It's kind of like buying something new, and finding out it's second hand and a bit low grade.

My machine and card are just fine.. not expensive, but more than good enough.

This is just a coding over-sight. And it's not just feeling of being ripped off, I kind of feel i've missed out on complete enjoyment of something very very impressive.

(also.. I think you can romance Tali! can't wait to get in that suit! rofl)
