I don't like this idea, but I propose an alternative: synthetic prosthetics and other augmentations. Think of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but then Mass Effect style.
Playing a protagonist with a metallic arm or cybernetic eyes a la TIM (or renegade Shepard, minus the glowy scars) would be awesome.

The Quarians were supposed to be like that. Tali even had a cybernetic arm in ME1.
The technology seemed to be prevalent in the ME universe but we weren't shown much of it.

I have to say, the more I think about it the more the concept of cybernetics appeals to me.
Thinking of the space western theme to the game, a big aspect of the western is the veteran of the Civil War moving west to start a new life. The American prosthesis industry really took off post-civil war replacing lost limbs; I can see a real parallel here with the cybernetics replacing war wounds from the Reaper War.
