Because I am at work and cranky and not interested in reading about other people's crankiness, I figured I'd start a thread of (non-spoilery) changes that really impressed me about ME2. I'll admit that there are some things I'm not a huge fan of in the new game (yet?), but they're pretty much overwhelmed by the things I think are awesome. Please feel free to add. (If you want to shoot something down/complain about something someone else suggests, please remember there are already a few dozen threads dedicated to that already.)
- Head shots. It bugged me that you could snipe in ME1 and it didn't seem to matter where you hit someone. This is much better.
- Graphical detail. While we do find ourselves is much more enclosed spaces in ME2, the trade-off is that the level of detail and polish is phenomenal. (This, even more than the new cover system, is the main area where I think we see the influence of the Gears of War franchise.)
- Immersive audio/sounds. I want to say "it really sounds like you're on a space station!" but I have never been on a space station. How about: It really sounds like you are in a city, complete with crowd chatter, background advertising, newscasts, and so on. In space. Much better for immersion.
- Improved character poses and camera angles. The facial animation for dialog sequences in ME1 was far beyond what most other RPGs have traditionally offered, but the characters still often looked kind of stiff, lifeless, and dully presented at the same close-to-middle distance camera shots, using the same limited set of scripted postures and hand gestures. There's much more variety in ME2 dialog scenes, with cameras cutting around cinematically and characters moving about more realistically.
- The dialog writing. Don't get me wrong, I love the story in ME1, but the dialog in this game is so much better written. It's like they hired a "Head Witty Banter Writer" or something. The humor and affection apparent between the characters is even more affecting and believable than ever before.
- Minerals matter. If you're going to send us off on geological surveys, at least have us use the stuff for something.
- More hotkey buttons. For those of us playing on Xbox, it was a pain that you could only have one quick-mapped power in ME1. The controller configuration in ME2 (with 3 power hotkeys) is a big improvement.
- Better autosaves. Autosaving is frequent and happens in the background, without stalling the game. Lovely.
- Bathrooms on spaceships. I don't know why the lack of bathrooms on the Normandy bothered me so much in ME1, but this was very reassuring. I'd hate to think that the crew has to sleep AND urinate in those pods.
(Edited to add the autosave one after reading a thread where someone mistakenly complained the game had no autosave. Thanks for reminding me, guy!)
