I'm about to do Varric's quest and enter Valammar. I am just wondering who are the best party members to take. Obviously I am going to take Varric since it is his quest, and he will probably have the best dialogue options. But I am unsure of who else to take. I usually bring Solas because he offers insight into the Fade and various things I generally enjoy (especially since I am a female Elf Mage who is currently romancing him lol), but if he offers little during this particular storyline I would consider Dorian (I like to have another Mage besides myself), since he is always fun. I would just take those two, but I generally want a tank (Warrior) in my party. I was considering Iron Bull, but I am not sure he would be as invested in the Red Lyrium as some of the others...Plus he is truly a delight when he opens his mouth lol.

What are people's thoughts or experiences on this particular quest? I basically want to know from a story/dialogue view point who the best people. I tried to look up what other people have done for this quest, but there seems to be no threads about "Well, ****" and what the best party members are. Try to use as few spoilers as possible (for my sake and others).

If I remember rightly, no one has unique comments in Valammar, except Varric (during his personal quest). You might want to take a mage to plug a darkspawn hole though.

Well that would make who to bring easier if he is the only one who says anything. I am a mage so I normally do all that stuff myself. Thank you for your reply though, it does make it easier.

Yes, unfortunately most NPC quests exist in a vacuum like that -- I was really disappointed by the silence during Cassandra's quest, myself. The only exceptions I remember are Cole's (heavy mandatory NPC involvement) and Iron Bull's (some of the other companions are addressed/briefly interrogated if they are in your party). One companion has a single line before the action/drama kicks in during Solas' quest, but oddly not during those parts. A few companions may also have a few words to say during a grim moment early in Blackwall's quest, but, again, that's only before the plot really takes off.

Go ahead with anyone you like.  Bull lets you know that his boss, "the Qunari, really doesn't like red lyrium" during the Demands of the Qun quest, so he does have an vested interest in making his boss happy.  The Deep Roads are full of darkspawn and Blackwall will fit right in.  As far as Cass goes, she's one of the Inquisition's founders.  She has as much reason as anyone else to be there.

Good thinking on Varric because it's his quest and Dorian because he's fun.  Perfect reasons for them to be the first picks.

Take at least one warrior, because there's a section only a warrior will be able to get you into.

My male human mage takes his romance Cassandra everywhere (with the exception of Cole's quests, obviously). And Varric is mandatory on his own quest. So I think I went with Dorian on this one. I don't remember him having any banter though.

I would say the most relevant people for this from most to least are:

1. Varric, because its his quest.

2. Cassandra, because she has an interest in information regarding red lyrium.

3. Solas, because of huge spoiler reasons regarding Bianca's business partner.

4. Dorian, because of a spoiler reason regarding Bianca's business partner.

5. Blackwall, because it's the Deep Roads and you might find darkspawn.

6. The Iron Bull, because he hates red lyrium, and he should report Bianca's findings to the Ben'Hassrath.

7. Vivienne, because she might take interest in the magical properties of red lyrium, especially if she... takes a high social position at the end of the game.

Cole and Sera don't matter because Cole already knows what red lyrium is, and Sera hates it enough already to know that it should be destroyed. But Cole might have something interesting to add, though I don't know this for certain.
