As the topic states, I just finished my first playthrough of the game, and I must say, it was an incredible game. Continued my soldier from ME1 on Hardcore, and it was simply so much fun. The suicide mission was epic.
I ended up losing 2 people in the mission. First, I lost Legion. I sent him through the tunnels to hack the doors, and he got blasted as the final door was closing. I picked Samara to lead the second team, as Miranda stressed experience should determine who led the team. Who has more experience than a 1000 year old Justicar? After that, I chose Samara to lead the second team again, and Subject Zero to maintain the barrier around my party. Zero made it through easily, but Samara got killed. =/
Finally, I decided to make the surviving crew members walk back to the ship alone. I knew they werent going to make it, but I didn't want to risk any of my teammates. Took Garrus and Tali with me to destroy the base, which we did, and then booked it out of there. I got a little worried when my Shepard took that jump to get on the Normandy, I was going to be pissed if I didn't make it lol.
What did you guys do, and were you more effective with your tactics than I was?

Samara wasn't a good choice because she has said herself she has always worked alone. She would not know how to lead a team into battle while Garrus or Jacob does.
As for Legion dieing, the only thing I can think of is loyalty or not enough upgrades. I always send Legion into the vents and he does fine.
Also if Grunt is loyal and upgraded he can escort the crew back with no issues, as can a couple other members.

Ah. Thank you. Yeah, I can see how Samara may not have been the best choice, but she got the job done the first time so I assumed she'd do fine the second time as well. I had the loyalty of all my team, but not all of them were fully upgraded, so I guess I will need to work on that on my future playthroughs. Thanks for the feedback!

Actually, according to the wiki, your choosing Samara is what got Legion killed in the first part and what got Samara killed in the second part. If you choose the wrong person to go through the ventilation shaft OR if you choose the wrong leader for the second team, the person you sent into the shaft gets killed trying to shut the door.

This is correct. Choosing the wrong leader for the team will kill the tech specialist. Garrus and Miranda are the right choices to lead the teams.
