When I first played the game (well a bit of it...) I knew that I wanted it to be a Dwarf. (Since my Warden was a Dwarf.) then as time went buy I thought how I should have made it different...having it Dwarf/Human/Dwarf sounds kinda boring (DA:O/DA2/DA:I) So I said good bye to my Dwarf to make another one...(nice looking Elf/Human or even Qunari)
Might end up going back to my Dwarf once I have the time again lol.
Did you know what race you wanted?

My canon inquisitor will always be a qunari mage.

Canon is human female mage. But I've played as female humans, Qunari, Elves and male Humans. Zero interest in male elves. They look broken. Tried to start a game as a female DW Dwarf. Didn't finish it. Generally I play as a female human mage.

For me canon is my elf mage. I feel so much more connected to the game world/events with that combo. Tried playing as a human rogue at one point but it felt wrong. Other than not wanting the world to end I just didn't see why my Human rogue Inquisitor would give two toots about either the Templars or the Mages.

I normally play as elf on my initial run. So I hit lucky when it turned out that there was so much elf lore involved in the story. I tried going human on my second run but found it difficult to get into it, so did another elf, but different gender and class. Then another. Finally got back to doing a human.
I think I might have had more incentive to do different races if we'd had proper origin stories like DAO, although even there I did every permutation of elf: Dalish, mage and City, before moving on to the other races.

Yes, unlike with Origins where I only cared about getting the mabari ASAP.
The premise of the game made me want to try playing a devout, thoughtful and rather open-minded Andrastian -- a character who would have a personal stake in said premise and a credible reason to be at the Conclave. When the game hit me with the "Herald of Andraste" business, I was delighted with the roleplaying challenge it presented. So the Trevelyan family turned out to be an absolutely perfect fit. Sadly, the big faith theme and its different manifestations in and effects on different people is woefully underexplored like so many things, but I still enjoyed it and bonded over some of the other characters with it.

Qunari because it was new. Unfortunately the camera angles were awkward so i switch to elves. No regrets since you learn alot of elf lore and romancing Solas who likes to spill his secrets when you made him mad.

Usually I go for elven rogues (city elf if I could get it but I reluctantly settled for dalish). Otherwise I like the dwarf commoner. I really wish there was a human commoner background. I hate that all the humans represented to us are always rich and privileged. I really wish I could have been a wash woman or a beggar. I also really missed my City Elf this time too.
I've yet to play Qunari. Not sure why. I may get round to it at some point anyhoo.

I knew I wanted to make a dwarf, until I saw the dwarves in Inquisition
Then I made a human.
When dwarf is second place
human master race

Never make a human unless I have to. Male Dwarf nr 1 and male Elf as nr 2.

With the reveal that Sera had a thing for qunari ladies, that became my first choice. Unfortunately, I suck at making a qunari that I like the look of, so scraped it and went with a male human. But, before that reveal, a male human was my go to choice.

In each of the Dragon Age Games I have played all of the available races, though my personal favorite is Elf.
I have over 1000 hours invested in DAI and have yet to play to the end, though I am getting near there for each of my characters.
I did know, however, that I wanted to start as an Elf - Rogue in DAI. I missed not having that option in DA II. In the case of DA II, though, that would not have worked in that game, so my romantic interest became Merrill.
My online persona of Selene Moonsong is based on an Elf Bard character I played in the Neverwinter Nights series of games, and I began playing Elves back in my days of playing D&D and AD&D (table top) over 30 years ago and have been my favored race when it is available in a game.

Elves! Always the elves! ![]()
(Although I was also really excited to play a Qunari for the first time, and wasn't disappointed.
)
(Dwarves are still amazing too, although I already played a carta thug with my Dwarf Commoner.

I've never wanted to play anything but humans although I'd be tempted to play a female elf, in DA1, to romance Solas once but I won't do that while she looks like she has twigs for arms. ![]()

I'm pretty beholden to dwarf PCs if given an option. So my initial thought was that my canon Inquisitor would also be a dwarf (like my canon Warden). But then they announced qunari and it just seemed like something so different, so I decided to give it a go and really liked him. So now I've got dwarf --> human --> qunari. Which sets me up perfectly for my PC in DA4 to be......... another dwarf! You didn't really think I'd say elf did you?

Human, human, human.
How's that for boring?
I believe that Dragon Age has always been a series for human protagonists. Humans fit the storylines and lore best.
If you're an elf, you are an elf surviving in a human world. You're either a broke servant class in an alienage or something similar, or you're a nomad who walks around barefoot in the wilderness.
If you're a dwarf, you're either from Orzammar or you're a surface dwarf. So you're in a caste, you have no caste, or you're in roughly the same boat as the city elves.
Qunari haven't been shown much, not even in DA:I. If the next game takes place in Qunari lands, then yeah, maybe a qunari protagonist will be in order. But even the qunari as a race are rumored to be the result of magical experiments of Tevinter, again, humans.
Humans are simply the top of the food chain. And all the human protagonists so far have had noble connections. The Couslands, the Amells, the Hawkes, the Trevelyans. This makes them more compatible with the events of each game. The Cousland can become a joint ruler, the Amell can at least rule Gwaren, Hawke regains noble holdings and can become Viscount(ess), the Trevelyan rules over the most powerful organization in Thedas. Humans of noble linage coming to power over human lands, holdings, or groups.
Makes more sense than an elf or dwarf coming to rule over human things, and much less threatening than a qunari coming to rule over them.

I'm so boring, I just really like to play as a human. I like the feel of the story as a human.
Dwarves don't have magic so that's a no go for me.
It's my second playthrough and I'm playing as a female elf now, it's okay but I always go with human during the first playthrough. I wanted to try a Qunari too but I heard it was disappointing.

I knew that I'd eventually finish the game with all the races, and I have. That said, I planned my first inquisitor carefully. She would be a dwarven rogue who romanced Blackwall. It was a really fun playthrough, and I'll probably consider her my "main" Inquisitor going forward. That isn't to say that I won't care about my other Inquisitors! But my first one will always be my favorite.

I wanted to play a dwarf Inquisitor from the moment we heard race selection was back. I was briefly tempted by the qunari, since that way I could have been a mage, and I hadn't played one of those as my 'canon' protagonist before, but ultimately the idea of a Carta assassin becoming the Herald proved too tempting. No regrets!
So now my 'canon' universe goes human rogue (archer) > human warrior > dwarf rogue (stabby). If race selection is back in DA4, I might go qunari mage then. Or dwarf warrior.

Human master race, so you don't have to feel like weirdo being surrounded by master race everywhere.
Stand by the master race, make others die by the master race.

I originally really wanted to play Qunari for the novelty and roleplay experience. My first PT was a Dalish mage though (something I always wanted to play in DAO) and I think it's my fave. There is so much content for a Dalish elf and all the lore reveals felt more hard-hitting when I was role-playing as one. Definitely worth it!

Humans fit the storylines and lore best.
Eh, that's mostly a subjective statement, especially in DAI where one could easily make the argument that elves fit better because of the elven lore, Solas, etc.
Personally, I don't get much out of human characters in fantasy games, so humans are the one race I avoid, esp human females. Blah.

Well, I knew I wanted to play as the Great Race of Yith but that wasn’t an option so I played as a dwarf instead.
