Black Sam Bellamy's Ship, the Whydah, ran aground on April 26, 1717 in a strong gale and disappeared off the shores of Cape Cod. She was said to be carrying 4.1 tons of silver, along with some gold. In 1984, after 267 years, the wreck was found, under a mere 16 ft. of water....

1717 is also the year Edward Teach, better known as "Black Beard", captured the French ship, Le Concorde. This ship was renamed Queen Anne's Revenge. He ran this ship aground on a sand bar near Beaufort, South Carolina. The ship was found in this area and excavated in the late 1990s.
