So I randomly woke up, hopped in to a PUG Nightmare from matchmaking and found a friend and his friend, AT THE DRAGON.
Oh and then I only went on to drop the Dragon Shield AND the Hakkon Staff. RnG probability tells me in all likelihood that I am still sleeping 
this happenend to me once too!
(But then I woke up...)

Just bear this in mind: you may have took the spot from an unlucky bastard who spent his effort to reach the dragon and got disconnected or crashed or bugged out. He may be in tears crying over what has happened to him and lose out his chance to win a sweet hakkon weapon. He may be in fury trying to complain to his friends how unfair what has happened to him. He may also smashed his computer for this.
Be grateful for his sacrifice and always bear it in mind: because it may happen to you as well 
Actually I joined as another guy was joining, if this was the case, my friend Dex would have told me and I would have backed out.
Early matchmaking on a weekday in Europe is limited I regularly solo Perilous games and no-one joins at all. My friend Cannibal has to get me Nightmare lobbies as I can't find one, at that time he finds a different US game almost every 2-3 mins.
I commend you on your theory, but only the 2 mages joined at the end. My buddy Dex was the Lego.
