First of all, let me say that turning the specialization acquirement into tedious fetch quests is just about the most baffling thing I've yet encountered in Dragon Age: Inquisition--and I've encountered some baffling design decisions. This particular quest is irking me so much that I almost don't even want to play the game.

Now, I'm sure there must be some easy way to find the tomes that I need to complete the quest, but I've gone to the areas in the Western Expanse mentioned in the quest description, and scouted all around, and I've yet to find any of the spellbinders that drop these friggin' things. I've found Venatori--just not the right kind (also, not many of them, to be honest).

So I'm wondering, what am I doing wrong? How can I get these tomes? I'm at the point that I'm kind of about to decide that I don't even want to specialize my Inquisitor.

Exalted Plains,  Ghilqn'nain's Grove. Halin'sulahn and the Desolate Bank.  All in Exalted Plains.

I eventually just went and found a video tutorial that showed exactly where everything was--the tomes were one thing, but I'd have probably never found that book I needed. This quest was terrible.

The specialization quests were added when people complained that getting specializations was too easy in DAO and DA2.

Well after the patch it seems like they fixed this quest. However I am playing a templar story-line person right now and not a mage story-line person right now.

When I do I'll know for sure to see if Nightsoul and Cardac are lieing because before the patch if you go to these spots in the exalted plains:

There will be FREEMEN OF THE DALES guys there and they don't EVER drop Venetori tomes so your stuck having to go to the FORBIDDEN OASIS, HISSING WASTES or HINDERLANDS to find venetori people there.

The generic enemies in EP are Freemen, but the spots marked in the map should have Venatori enemies. However, your class also affects the type of enemies spawning there. If you play as a warrior, these locations will have the Champions instead (who drop Heraldic Symbols).

As much as I like DA2, this was a fault for sure. But I wouldn't say it about DAO in some cases. Reaver, Blood Magic, and Champion especially. AW was neat, if you like simply discovering things. And they weren't fetchy sidequests, but made sense in how they integrated in the main quest -- and the gruesome cost of some of them. You really had to do some serious roleplaying for Reaver and BM just to be one.
