Is varric a must for any extra dialogue? Any companions get special dialogue like hawks sibling did in legacy
Varric gets the occasional interjection, but so far I haven't noticed any special dialogue for any companion, not even Varric or Blackwall.

Not an argument. The Deep Roads in Origins and 2 had a story.
What? No it did not. The deep roads in origin was mostly start at a fight till you get to b and while you're doing it the game stops and goes "hey, look at how horrible the darkspawn are...especially to woman"...and the once at point b it goes.."Hey, look at how crazy this one woman it...are you going to back her?" and"Golems are made of soylent green".
Not much story at all in the deep roads ever.
The DA2-esque mobs in combat totally killed this DLC for me. So. Freaking. Tedious.
You fighting Darkspawn in the deeproads..... What were you expecting? Even in dao in the deep roads you were mobbed. And in the dlc it only happens in one place.
Would you be so kind to tell me whether you got some special reactions as as a a Dwarf?
Yes you do. It's start right at the beginning with Harding when she says that as a "Sky Gazer" she's not allowed inside Orizimar and the Dwarf quizzy say that there are ways to get in. or something similar can't remember the exact wording.
I'm liking it so far. I'm playing it on my first and main Inquisitor (that hasn't even done Jaws yet). My other Inquisitor has done Jaws but not Descent.
Unfortunately though a lot of the armor/schematics I'm getting are completely useless because there is no dwarf warrior in my playthrough. Well, not completely useless since you can craft to get rid of class requirement.
Spoiler
Voice selection, race selection, or both?
I would be more than happy with only two races maximum for the next game (only human with gender option, even better).
IMHO, this eternal crying of the proven only 20% of DA players that can't live without every possible race showed in past games, as an option for main character creation, inflicted a huge damage in the development of DAI. When you put that, together with choosing an engine that the devs didn't even know how to make it work, plus having to downgrade the game to the maximum so not to enrage dated console platform players who refuse to save some bucks to upgrade their gaming systems, then you have a perfect recipe for what DAI ended up been at release. Beautiful scenery with empty feeling, repetitive combat with the same few monster spawning from and crawling around endless green holes, in between 1,000's of nonsense, boring fetch quests, a great variety of lobotomized protagonist all of them with less personality than the tranquil mage woman who sells goods at the Gallows, in DA2. A recycled main villain who is mostly absent throughout the entire game just to offer at the very end, an uninteresting subpar final battle.
That's why we didn't get any of the amazing content EA/Bioware showed in their the alfa content video and promised for DAI (choices, epic battles, consequences, real tactical camera, decent hair, interesting main story connected to the rest of the game, less shards collecting, interesting fetch quests with their little story, a decent amount of cinematic scenes and a protagonist with, at least, a minimum amount of personality. All that budget went into make eight bland protagonist options. And from whatever time and money they had left, they couldn't use it to improve the game because of the old console platforms not having enough memory for it.

And once more I get the feeling that I played a very different game then the one another user did on the BSN...and watched very different gameplay reveal marketing.

Yes, as you said, it must be you are just getting a feeling (the wrong feeling, of course). Don't worry, it will pass.
As you did with DAI, I have sometimes missed few essential pieces of gameplay marketing for other games. Thanks the maker for youtube. It's all there.
I find it to be an enjoyable dungeon crawl.
As far as the story goes, despite the more frequent cutscenes, it still feels akin to Jaws of Hakkon, more lore-heavy than character based, and it doesn't provide much opportunity to role-play. While some find the new characters engaging, I find them rather bland.
What I really like is the combat and the atmosphere. The combat keeps you on your toes, but in a better way than JoH. There are more enemies on the screen at a time to worry about. The Bolters are threatening in a way that requires actual tactical positioning and targeting to engage with, but they don't one-hit KO you out of nowhere like the Hakkon archers.
And I really liked how dark and atmospheric it felt. I liked descending into the dark unknown. And the environment of the lowest stage is just surreal.
I just beat it and found it to be very enjoyable, wish it had more story and companion interaction though.
What I did not like:
- The darkspawn archers are ok, but the new enemy archers are DAFUQ! JoH archers pale in comparison, bigtime.
This, oh my god. These bolters are ridiculous, with their (what feels like) FIVE consecutive shots that deal 550 damage each on Nightmare at level 27.
Coupled with the seemingly endless waves it really started to feel like a chore. Didn't help that the tank guys were immune to my staff's basic attacks either.
All in all, it's enjoyable and I think it's worth the money but pleeease Bioware, enough with your fixation on crazy strong ranged enemies in DLC.

Tip: use the Inq's special JoH ability and put a static cage over the archers. Laugh as they hurt themselves, get sundered and shocked in the meantime.
(NOBODY shoots my damn Inqy)

Oh, I did not know how much I would love that fade shield when I first happened upon it. I love the electricity spells so it was nice to take them in use again. The static cage is a joy.

The thing is that race selection was added really late to the game (a year before release) with most of the story, quests etc. already done.
It doesn't really make any sense that all flaws of the game wouldn't be there if we just got one race to choose from. That's just not how it works.
Only halfway through the 3rd floor, with its insane fight against an endless darkspawn horde (WHY is everything on fire? D:) , but I like the DLC a lot so far. The scenery is great. Love Ren and Valta and thier dynamic. Ren, especially. My party is Solas/Cass/Varric and so far I've had Varric interject into conversations with Ren and Valta at least twice (I really laughed when Ren hesitantly asked me about how I kept Skyhold from floating up into the sky and Varric cut in with some smartass mocking) and Cass once (with a *Disgusted Noise.*, no less.) I do wish I had more companion chatter, but then I always want that, so...
I really like the DLC so far. Totally worth the price to me. I just wish I had the soundtrack. The battle theme version of The Dawn Will Come is awesome.
I'm really enjoying the DLC so far; I just established the second camp after that grueling fight with the Emissary, if that tells anybody where I am.
To be honest, I'm sort of puzzled at the complaints about lack of companion interaction. The companions have chimed in during banters and cinematic conversations here or there...not a ton, but I don't feel like they did in the main game unless it was their personal quest most of the time. It's not like we can just talk to our companions any time out in the field, even in the base game. It's a DLC...they weren't going to go record a ton of lines for all 9 companions plus the new characters AND all 4 voices for the Inquisitor. I'm pretty satisfied with what I've gotten so far.
Edit: Have now finished the entire DLC. It was fun, but the second half actually got rather tedious for me. The enemies were WAY too tough...not even tough, really, just bucketloads of health and so it took FOREVER to put them down. And they were immune to everything. The ending was also slightly unsatisfactory because it left me with bunches of questions...but I think that's the point. It's a tease for DA4, most likely, or a novel or something. So I'm cool with that.

Um. No? Almost every fight, not just against darkspawn, was waves of enemies with way too much health. I think the smallest group I fought was five enemies.

I agree with the way too much health part. But the waves overall weren't so bad for me. And only got tedious in those fights where you had to take down the leader to stop the waves.

I loved it. This may honestly be my favorite DA DLC of all time but I feel kind of bad about that, especially since this is just my first time through, so right now I put it in the tie with Awakenings/ Legacy. Amazing DLC. Sure the combat was a bit blargh but the story...amazing.
5 is a pretty small group. It's only one 1 more than your own party. 1 less if you count the dwarves.
...And? The small group(s) of enemies were in the minority, and when you tack on the ridiculous amount of health each had, it felt like more than five anyway. I could literally take a refreshing nap during combat.
They were going to name it "The Decent", but the PR department added the 's' to avoid accusations of false advertising. ![]()
