To be fair, I still have very little idea how that blend even worked. An enemy could be standing a foot from me and somehow I'd still manage to get in 3 Force Storms before he could get in a melee attack. Whether a glitch or intentional, there were more than a few problems going on.

I think they were trying to get away from Vancian Casting, since Force Powers don't really work that way, but didn't commit with the whole system.

I know the combat had its share of bugs, although if I remember right the Burst of Speed line of abilities gave you more attacks per "round".

The one that annoyed me was getting stuck in the combat idle animation after combat ended and being unable to move for 5-10 seconds.

I'm not a huge fan of Vancian casting in video games anyway. I don't mind having to prepare ahead of time, but most of the times having a limited number of spells per day just means hitting the rest button in between encounters.

well i like the pc knights of the old republic like i said something with the game play of mass effect and the epic story line like Skyrim.

I don't have anything against pc I'm just a console guy I just got into pc games in the last two years

Mass Effect 1 was essentially Knights of the Old Republic without a bunch of wookies gargling in your face. The gameplay, hub areas, felt very reminiscent of that game's design which is just as well given it was lead by a lot of the same BioWare members who worked on KOTOR at the time, like Casey Hudson.

As for a few Star Wars RPG -- Feargus Urquhart from Obsidian said they were interested, but that was before EA took over all the development rights. So much for that :/

Wait EA is the only publisher able to develop Star Wars games?

Not gonna happen. Role playing genre is a dying breed for old farts like us.

Current kids and teens only like button smash, action, shooter and tablet games.

End of line.

The funny thing is, the Drs made Baldur's Gate and started Bioware because they wanted to make the best real RPG they could. I guess we'll have to wait for another 2 people to say "I'm sick of this action crap!" and actually make a company to produce real RPGs again.

For the most part, yeah.

Disney still has the rights to make social or mobile games, but EA got rights to the rest.

There are plenty. It's just not profitable for AAA development studios anymore. Off the top of my head, you have Obsidian, Larian and InXile as major RPG developers with studios like Piranha Bytes buzzing around trying to re-capture old magic.

BioWare has always cared about a mainstream audience more than making 'real RPGs'. Baldur's Gate was a way of making D&D a popular real time game, whereas the Gold Box D&D games were all turn based. KotOR was a big move towards mainstream development by bringing a cinematic PC RPG to consoles. Mass Effect even more so, with people who don't know the history of RPGs labelling it the first real genre hybrid of RPG and Action. The direction of the Dragon Age franchise clearly indicates they have always been chasing after mainstream dollars. The fact that they were so surprised Origins was a hit, combined with the fact that (according to Brent Knowles) they were already making Mass Effect oriented design changes for DA 2 before DA:O sales became known, just proves that making classical RPGs weren't on the agenda.

You have outliers like Neverwinter Nights and Jade Empire (and even JE was very action oriented) but as a whole, BioWare has always cared more about attracting a big audience to their stories and the RPG genre was merely the medium they chose to do that in, because many of their writers like Gaider have a background in PnP GMing. Once they got a loyal audience, they phased out as many RPG elements as possible if it meant allowing more focus on story and dialog. That's not to say BioWare never made good games or anything, even I like some of BioWare's works, or I wouldn't be here in the first place. But it's a very one sided progression and now that they are a AAA development studio, they couldn't go back even if they wanted to (hint: they don't).
