So I've just picked up the enhanced edition of Baldur's gate 1 and 2, currently I'm playing a fighter/ mage and have just arrived at Naskel.

I was wondering if anyone, with far more experience than me, had any tips or advice to get the most out of the game, anything from character builds to party setups is appreciated and thanks in advance.

As far as parties go, you can quite literally have success with any party composition - I've done 6 paladins, (MP party), 5 cleric/mages, 6 ranger parties and so on. They do require different tactics, though of course. Having said that, almost everyone finds it easier to have a thief who is good at dealing with traps. Having 1 arcane magic party member and divine magic party member is quite handy as well.

As far as getting the most of the game - I would do what you find the most fun, regardless if it's "best" or not. Some people love to explore - if that's you by all means do so. Some people love to role-play - if that's you, by all means do so.

In BG 1, ranged combat is king - absolutely everyone (except dual-wielders I suppose) should have range weapons ready to be used, when needed. They are extremely useful against powerful melee enemies like bears, as well as quite helpful against enemy mages, and ghouls/ghasts, who have the dangerous hold ability.

Definitely use your limited resources, like potions, scrolls, and wands, against strong enemies, typically enemy parties.

I'm not sure what your skill level is, but hopefully you find this useful.

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately my experience with this kind of RPG is lacking but I'll try your suggestions.

Fighter/ mage = look for wands... you don't get many spells so be picky and don't forget to summom your pet familiar

I see. Well if you're that new, perhaps you aren't familiar with Thac0. The lower the Thac0, the easier it is for your character to hit an enemy. However, if you use weapons for your characters that they have no skill with, they will take a significant Thac0 penalty. Minsc, for example, when you first get him, shouldn't be using quarterstaffs, as he has no skill with them. If you give him skill points in Quarterstaff later, then that would be OK. He doesn't need such pips, two-hand sword is quite suitable for him, but just saying as an example. You can see the Thac0 in the head icon, as well as what skills your characters have for weapons.
