The thing I wonder about is this: does it have a level of technological (or other) awesomeness somewhere that explains why this couldn't be made for old gen?

It's probably the volume of enemies. You don't fight many people at a time in the main game, but in The Descent there are several instances where you're fighting a dozen or more enemies all at once. Add in your party plus Valta and Renn, and I can see why the older consoles might not be able to handle it. Especially since, if I'm not mistaken, the old consoles' limits on soldiers led to the pre-alpha Keep battles getting cut.

The new weapons made with the plans only have rune slots.  Just like the ones in Jaws of Hakkon.

:'( Well, at least they look good.

I thought the environments looked fantastic as well as more lore! One could always use more lore! And there were plenty of loot to go around, not to mention schematics.

But yeah I agree with many of you here about the mob fights and some of the boss fights. They were tedious to get through! It was fun the first half, but when it got to second half, I just wanted to get the quests done.

Inevitably there will be criticism of any new elements introduced to a game via DLC after release. My only criticism is in regards to audio and graphical glitches that tailgunned my first effort to enter The Descent, and I mean seriously fouled up stuff. Total silence immediately after getting my sendoff from Scout Harding and right up until meeting the two dwarven companions who join you for this quest? Then my Inquisitor dropped through the floor and found herself in the nether regions of null space looking up at the floor that she was supposed to be standing on?

I backed out and launched a different character with a brief bit of audio glitching, before I was able to proceed and then none of that crap manifested itself again. Weird ****, right?

I'm glad that The Descent followed Jaws of Hakkon, because while I loved the former, some have had issues with aspects of that one and I feel as if Bioware responded somewhat. To me The Descent is compelling, jaw-dropping and well worth the $14.99 price. Even though this is a spoiler thread, without ruining the simple joy of discovery, if you liked the darkspawn, then hopefully you will appreciate being able to battle those foes again, and they aren't the only threats awaiting you down there either!

Bioware reinvented horde mode for some key battles that will blow your mind and perhaps challenge you as well. As for the mystery that was teased, it is very intriguing and widens our previous perception of the world of Thedas in a neat way. I liked the new weapons and armors found within, and it was great revisiting the Deep Roads once more in a substantive way.

Big win for me as a franchise fan, and an excellent job from those folks at Bioware who made this thing!!

The most glaring issue for me is, you don't make any CHOICES during the game. At the end I saw the big crystal thing and thought maybe there'll be some kind of relevant choice, like a moral dilemma regarding mining lyrium that could have major consequences in the future.

NOPE.

No if DAI was mediocre this is below mediocre, and I didn't feel that way about JoH.

It's easy to tell BW Austin developed this. I'm grateful for its frequent use of actual cinematics, but the structure, the camerawork, the use of props etc. it feels like I'm in SWTOR again, and it extends to the new enemy types and their (awful) AI and mechanics. The Ogres have too much health and become very boring like Flashpoint bosses in SWTOR, and their special moves feel super stiff and buggy.

Even the dialogue wheel is too rigid. I noticed that often you have these 3-fold choices, where the responses are like "yes", "no" and "maybe" and Idk. I think the main game and JoH had more characterization to the responses. The only companion banter here are also very cut and dry shots that go on turn and your crew each give you one line of something like "let's do this".

Overall I'm not feeling it. I haven't finished it and honestly this is the first time in DAI when I feel like maybe I want to quit the playthrough because it's just not enjoyable enough.

I don't think anything I've seen here would've been technically impossible on last gen though, but given that it's a project that's been passed on between Edmonton and Austin, I think maybe the problem lies somewhere in there and it simply became too much of a hurdle to make it work on last gen. Maybe Austin have no experience with PS3 and that became a deadline problem, so Bioware figured it was best to cut the ties now and for future DLC.

Speaking of future DLC. This is the last BW Austin project I ever put my money into. They made a **** MMO, SWTOR, a failed new IP that they canceled and now DLC that is clearly subpar for the main game it's tied to.

What choices were "necessary" during Return to Ostagar, The Golems of Amgarrak, The Stone Prisoner, Leliana's Song? Sometimes the dlc's we get are just about doing things from another perspective, or experiencing a different story setting within the narrative framework of the main campaign.

****, the difficulty is beyond broken at the long section that ends with Emissary Alpha. I quit for now.

The only really great thing I see about this DLC is that it makes me use tactical mode a lot. I still don't get how Bioware shipped the game with the tactical mode being this way, not being able to go through the ceiling like in DAO or zooming in above the cursor at it's highest zoom-in.

Cool, because it feels like DAO, but still kind of frustrating. I'm not sure how much play testing they gave this DLC.

To be honest, I was expecting the same quality as JoH, but even better since it's the deep roads. However,I went in expecting answers, not "more questions.

I did like the map, and the dungeon crawling style but, the lack of armor, and new mats left me with disappointment instead.

I did get into the lore, but the ending left me with a sense of emptiness. I feel like it was too abrupt, and with plot holes. I also feel like 16 dollars (with taxes) was too much for this content. JoH was worth the money because it took me around 2-3 days to complete everything. I loved the exploration aspect of JoH, unlike "The Descent."

Finally, I would like to point out, that, JoH was a very good DLC in terms of size, and content, and I think you

guys should strive towards that model and make it even better for future content. Although The Descent left me  disappointed, I do still appreciate the team's work.

Lol, I had to lower the difficulty, even though I had the cold rules, fire resist pots, and stuff, the fight was beyond cumbersome on Hard mode, that it felt that I was playing on Nightmare.

Not much given the numerous times I fell through textures, walls or rocks into the nirvana. Fortunately, since the companions don't follow I could solve it by switching to one of them and just walk away.

The Ogre Alpha and Emissary Alpha were the worst offenders for me. The amount of health they (and most other enemies had for that matter) was more irritating than challenging.

Emissary Alpha was a painful slog of combat. That barrier was ridiculous! And the endlessly spawning genlocks... Good thing I went through with my KE first. Not looking forward to going through with a warrior.

I'm fine with difficult boss battles, but not when they're hard due to the amount of HP said boss has.

New abilities?

Just saying, with their idiotic decision to limit your abilities to 8, adding more flashy and mostly gimmicky abilities that you will

probably ignore after using them a few times, is somewhat pointless.

That Emissary Alpha fight was certainly an extended battle, but I loved that we were getting swarmed by the darkspawn as well. It just made things that much more intense for me. I had a dwarven rogue Inquisitor who had made himself a set of those new Stone-Stalker daggers with Dragon crafting material, and he was wearing a Legion of the Dead armor. Cassandra, Iron Bull and Dorian were my team!

I liked it, personally. It did leave me with more questions than answers (much like the Inquisitor, lol) but being honest I see that as a good thing when it comes to stories like this.

I liked the battles but dear god those health bars were ridiculous! I got that the enemies level up with you but once or twice I thought that Dragons had lower health. And those Bolters...

Anyway, taking into account all the pros and cons, I did like The Descent. It could have done with being cheaper than it's £11.99 price tag but not by much. £9.99 maybe?

Also, David Hayter FTW! :D

This is one of the reasons all my mages carry Dispel. One casting takes away half the barrier.

I guess I've never really had an issue with HP bloat in DAI, because, between cross class combos and poison/sunder/bleeding effects, the game gIves us lots of different ways to take deplete enemy HP quickly.

That being said, the inability to save between saves for that rather long encounter is annoying. If I didn't beat it on the first try, I would have rage quit.

The swarming wouldn't have bothered me all that much if that emissary wouldn't have kept renewing his barrier. They really need to put less "health" on enemy barriers or make it to where they gradually decrease like the player's. That just made the whole fight seem cheap, and it seems that it's the only way BW thinks to make mage enemies challenging. Personally, I think it would've worked better if they'd have gotten rid of (or severely reduced) the amount of barriers and given him some better spells. Either more damaging or a enemy version of CC, like a paralysis spell.

What in the name of the Nug King, were those asshat's bolters shooting? Were they just triple barreled rapid fire crossbows? Or were they shooting Lyrium shards?

Hell, even the PS4 had some fps problems.
Edit: Mages+Cassandra/Templar Quizzi can easily take care of the barrier.

- Lesser secrets than in JoH.

All magic is blood magic. You can't get a much bigger secret than that.

BOLTERS. ARE. VERY. ANNOYING!!!

More so than a person typing in all caps in a forum even.

Actually, only part of the combat in this DLC (hell, the whole game) that i actually enjoyed. Put it on Casual, and you can make them kill themselves by Jedi sword deflection with the Knight Enchanter or the Jaws of Hakkon Veil Bubble. Also, using my Masterwork Staff ability to explode enemies when killed to clear a horde of deepstalkers (and nugs). Framerate dropped to the ground on that one, though.

This.  Also went through with a KE first. No idea how I'll fare with a non ranged character. I have a DW Rogue- and I have no idea how he'll fight the machine gun guys. Even the low level grunts have 15k to 20k health points.

I'm guessing some sort of lyrium pellets, considering the bluish glow.

For those who haven't done started yet, I would definitely recommend getting Aegis of the Rift in JoH before doing The Descent.
