After having played for a couple of hours of the dlc, I have obtained tier 4 weapon schematics for longsword, maul, staff, bow and the shield. However after going into the crafting station I find out that the crafted tier 4 maul, staff and bow lack their respective upgrades slots.

Here is a breakdown of the crafting of these three weapons:

Revered Defender Maul:

Damage: 26 metal;

Offense: 8 cloth;

Offense: 8 cloth;

Offense: 8 metal.  NO grip or pommel in the crafted weapon

Lyrium-Infused Staff:

Damage: 26 metal;

Offense: 10 leather;

Offense: 8 cloth;

Utility: 8 cloth. NO grip or blade in the crafted weapon

Lyrium-Reinforced Longbow:

Damage 26 metal;

Utility: 10 leather;

Offense: 8 cloth;

Utility: 8 leather; NO grip in the crafted weapon

Based on the amount of marterials used to craft these 3 weapons, they should have upgrade slots. I believe this is a design oversight of these weapons and it makes these end-game ultimate weapons less than ideal to use. I am not sure if this will be easy to fix.

Do the regular loot versions have upgrade slots? That would tell us if they were intended to be upgradable.

No. And I think all these weapons are intended to be non-upgradable. But if that is the case, they need to bump up the amount of materials (cloth, leather) used to craft these weapons. I am too lazy to post JOH tier 4 weapon schematics and BE tier 3 legendary schematics, but they all use significant more amount of materials to craft if they are non-upgradable.

Yeah, I agree with with you there.

That's a pretty bad oversight, considering it's one of the main things the DLC adds, and is advertised to give you. I hope they fix it, but I doubt it.

I doubt it'll be fixed since they still haven't rectified the same problem with the staff from Jaws of Hakkon.

It isn't a bad oversight, it's purposeful. The only benefit stat-wise from both DLC's is the availability of some extra Tier 4 mats to go with the Dragon Tier 4 Mats. A slight upgrade to armor and shield as well. I haven't even come across any Tier 4 upgrades for armor or weapons --- just another reason why I think the Tier 4 weapons aren't really meant to have upgrades). Also, I finished Hakkon with all my characters level 27 (really should all be 28 by the end of the DLC but it's capped), so here I am playing Descent without the possibility to level. So at this point it's mostly about the lore and story, nothing else. They needed to increase the level cap to 30 imo, especially with the addition of two new Inquisitor spells. That said, at least the Hakkon DLC provided a slight challenge on nightmare at the very beginning, although once you figure out the Avvar the challenge is gone.

I didn't mean not having upgrade slots was an oversight; I meant not giving you more material slots to compensate was.

My apologies Banshee, the comment was meant to be a general statement re: Tier 4 weapon power and wasn't specifically directed to the fact that they didn't provide more material slots.

Really, it looks like all the new Tier 4 weapons are on par with Hakkon's Wisdom. Not actually bad, just bad compared to the other high tier weapons.

Similar problem also happens on Axe of Dragon Hunter from BE (2H axe schematic). it has 20 x metal offense slots, 12 x leather offense slots and 6 x metal utillity slots. with this number of slots, it is supposed to not be able to upgraded with haft and pommel. However, it CAN. and it make this schematic way too IMBA.

I doubt if EA cares about it though.

The black emporium weapons still offer the best flexibility and stat boosts I crave.  Though they don't have upgrade slots either.   Though I felt like they didn't really need them.   :D

The Black Emporium weapons that don't have upgrade slots instead have massive secondary slots to make up for it. That's the difference between a Staff of Corrution and a Hakkon's Wisdom.

It's close re: the BE weapon schematics, but for me the Wrath of Lovias staff worked best seeing as how it allowed me to get my overall crit rate into the 70's. Using the masterwork slot with 5 hidden blades made it a truly overpowering weapon throughout the game and let's you breeze through Nightmare difficulty, especially if you're a KE Mage. When you add blade and grip the total number of mats used on the BE staffs exceeds anything in the you can get in the two DLCs by a rather substantial number. In terms of armor, I found the Refined Battlemage available in Hakkon to be the best overall, slightly better than the Tier 3. For One handed Warriors I found the defender shield was best, and it's available very early on in the Descent DLC.
