I learned the hard way you don't just go in killing everything. You have to kill them in the order it shows during the quest. If you try and kill everything, they will continue to spawn.
Is anyone else finding 'Reclaiming the Thaig' impossible?

Cleansing Runes.
Iron Bull, Cassandra, Cole & Talsaar (Qunari Rift mage). Breezed all the way thru until the final battle. Never did get the Guardian defeated.....

I didn't have much trouble tbh.
I was on normal with a top tier artificer rogue so it was a cake walk but >.>
I think I used a potion or 2.

You can actually defeat it? I thought it was normal that the fight stops after you destroy a few of those core things?

I did it on a level 27 pre-trespasser on nightmare no problem, didn't take all that long, didn't find anything superbly challenging either.
I just did it on a level 24 post-trespasser all best schematics made @ t4 materials (like I did pre-tres) but with the new skill toggles and a few new items...... I blew through it in less then half the time it took the first run.... this is also having almost every trial turned on as well on Nightmare... dagger assassin's too OP... specially with AOE on Hidden blades+throwing blades combo build.

I ran it on my Qunari Mage, with Varric, Iron Bull and Cassandra, all defalt class but, points applied to my liking, not auto leveled, Nightmare difficulty.
Went in at level 12, back out, in at 15, out again, in at 19 and, rocked it until we got below the deep roads, then it was very challenging, and that the Maker I'm an Knigh Enchanter with revive, I needed it three times down there, Lost all but my self on those fights.
Last barrier was killer, have to get the devices, then ignore the fighting and open the barrier to end it or those nasty, lyrium hyped dwarves just keep spwaning forever. Meant loosing my crew, but, I have revive so, no big deal, the fighting stops and, you can move on.
I'd definitely reccomend plenty of potions, use regen on you save healing for crew. And have a KE alon, you or Vivienne for revive. And if you are a fire mage, spec a couple non fire, some things in there are immune to fire and MotR so, leaves the fire mage out of it, if it's you and, you don't have ice or electric or, KE to rely on for those.
Latter replayed it at 21 and, it became a cake walk, even on nightmare but, I knew the map better and, what to do when so, that helps.

Quizzy and Dorian went down early while Cass fell through the map.
To make matters worse, Dorian didn't have Dispel as this was my first attempt and I didn't know what to expect so I ended up having to break the Emissary Leader's barrier the old fashioned way.

Ah... memories! My fav part was when my Mage Inquisitor, Solas and Cass went down. Cole tried to revive them but they died on their feet so he was pushing their bodies around like Chess pieces. ![]()

I was already at the lv cap with the best armor and gear in the game by the time I got here and it was a brutal fight. Most of the hordes were easy to dispatch. I just kept my party back and lured enemies in a few at a time.
What got me was that damned Emissary at the end. I was a mage. And I had Cassandra, Blackwall and Varric with me. Next time I might try with more mages. But damn that emissary took forever to die. I fought it longer then any dragon or other boss in the game. Even the guardian at the end was a quicker fight.

It took my Cadash DW Artificer Rogue about 45 minutes to finish the fight on Nightmare at Level 27, after 3 hours of failed attempts.
I ended up using Blackwall as my immortal tank, Solas and Dorian for barriers up and crowd control, while Cadash spammed throwing knives and elemental mines to whittle down the enemies health, before retreating into stealth or under the Aegis of the Rift.

It was certainly quite a pain at level 12-13 with whatever weapons and armor the quests had given by that level. I could not advance after the deep roads part since those mystery enemies deeper were 16+ and I had to level up a bit
With another char level 22+ after the end of the official campaign save it was a lot easier.

Reclaiming the Thaig is one of the best things about The Descent. What an epic battle against the darkspawn that was!! I've gone through several times and at least once as each class, and while the fight is tougher on lower levels, personally I don't think that is was impossible or irritating even on Hard setting. Haven't done a nightmare run.
As an assassin archer with a couple of tanks and the mage of your choice this fight is quite fun!

Darkspawn seemed to be a lot easier to kill when I was a warden.
The Joining does tend to have that effect.
And now for my actual advice: Confusion Grenades work wonders in this area, because there are so many enemies. Just give every party member a stack of 'em, and make sure to save a couple for the emissary fight. Also Pitch Grenade the emissary so it goes down faster. And do JoH before Descent, if you haven't already, because Aegis of the Rift is awesome throughout this DLC. There are some enemies coming up that just get shredded by AoR + Retributive Strike.

Did it on nightmare at around lvl 24. Did about 5 runs where i got to the Alpha but then i finally ran out of potions
Then on my 6th i finally realized that a potion crate is hidden in each area. If you clear the wave, look around and try to find the crate to replenish health potions

Yes. Cleansing runes are a must. Give them to everyone in your party makes it less painful.

The trial that all enemies scale with you scales them down too not just up.

Okay so i just finished this quest after +/- 15 tries at level 11... Playing it so many times i searched every corner of the area there are three supply crates one on a rocky road on the left of the door you need to pass through , and one by the ogres and other as you start on your left down some stairs. How did i do this, firstly i killed the first 10 creatures you need to kill. i had two mages , for reviving and defensive spells , two double handed warriors. Also i used the mages as snipers out of the range of other enemies. then i went straight to the door that is marked and headed left through the rocky route , towards the ogres, two mages were positioned on the top of the staircase leading down to the ogres, for some reason the ogres never come all the way up the stairs, and two warriors down stairs ... the mages keep reviving the warriors and they kill the ogres, the supply crate by the ogres is the first one i used because i kept attacking with mages out of the enimies ranges... then i after all the characters are revived properly and full heath i headed back to fight the to shield thingies... while fighting them you are getting mobbed by other creatures simly run away , let the characters resporn near you with low health go to the supply crate by the stairs, fill up on health go back and attack and kill all.... then after that head back down to where i killed the ogres and there is mage thingy you need to kill, just follow the same procedure mages distance warriors close, mages reviving warriors..... and thats how i did it. thank god to all the glitches like mages attacking longer than enimies area of attention , ogres not climbing stairs....I leave you with my hard earned knowledge for finishing the quest at lvl 11. It took really long, 1 and a half hours this was around the 15th attempt... it was infuriating but it can be done at low level, just tedious , requires tons of planning and not knowing that you needed to be at a higher level to play it.

I've only played it post main game so level 24 plus. However, when you say it was easier to kill darkspawn as the Warden, surely that shouldn't be a surprise since that is what Wardens are designed to do, kill darkspawn, so it would be rather disappointing if they weren't better at it than a regular person. I actually found the challenge of fighting waves of darkspawn refreshing given how easy most enemies seemed to be in the main game and the darkspawn on the Storm Coast weren't challenging at all.

I am playing on Nightmare and that is exactly what that fight is... a nightmare. Seriously, **** that alpha Emissary. And those damn archers. The problem isn't the fact that it is hard, it is the fact that the fight is so damn long that if you are killed by the Alpha emissary, you have to go through a 20 minute fight (with no saves at any point) just to get back to them. There is a difference between being difficult and just being needlessly frustrating.
You think that's bad? The first time I did the DLC I got the Emissary almost down FINALLY . . . and my computer crashed due to a @#%@# memory leak in the game.

[Minor spoiler]
Massively hard. Got through on second or third attempt about level 25, with only Blackwall alive on full guard for most of it, and running around reviving people when he had a moment. They lived a bit, did a bit of CC or damage and died. Rinse and repeat. fight took about 20 minutes or so - my hands and wrists were hurting on the controls.
Now the [spoiler here!] blue lyrium monster on the other hand ...

That's the only thing that worried me. Fortunately I succeeded on my first attempt.

10 Shrieks + 2 Hurlock Alphas + 2 Genlock Alphas + 2 Ogres + 1 Alpha Emissary, a slew of other lesser darkspawn all the while, and there's only 2 supply caches in the whole room. Darkspawn seemed to be a lot easier to kill when I was a warden.
How has everyone else beaten this? I'm level 14 on my dual dagger rouge Inquisitor and my first try at this fight lasted about an hour and a half. I got past the ogres fairly well and then I spent a lot of time during the Alpha Emissary fight running to a point where my party revived themselves to half health. Then I got killed by spiders in a desperate search for a non-existent third supply cache. I'm playing on casual with friendly fire off and I've upgraded my health potions to 12 I'm still finding this totally impossible.
Is my only option really to go back to a non-DLC area and level grind until I gain a few levels? I'd honestly rather not do that seeing as I'm playing with mods and getting mods to work with this DLC has been tricky so far.
It's definitely hard, but it's doable. All I can suggest is take your time and try to venture past the supply caches and come back for them. Also, when you revive fallen party members they tend to come back with more health than they had right before falling. ![]()

Kill all three of the dragons in Emprise du Lion, equip the gear, then come back to the deep roads = sanity salvaged.

I've completed it on level 22... with difficulty and a lot of potions and resting... I would recommend leveling up.
