there's a cave, it's a side mission (at least that's what I'm guessing it is) about 10 or 15 minutes into the abyss that's just filled with nugs. once you get in you see what looks like a throne, your character says "an altar? for offerings?" and then i can't figure out what to do next. there's no option to click on the altar, or anything, killing nugs gets you nowhere, they just respawn. and the search tool doesnt offer any help. any1 figured out what youre supposed to do here that can point me in the right direction?

You need to place a wheel of cheese on the throne (if you don't have the cheese, you won't be able to interact with it). I can't remember where it was looted from, but it was one of the earlier levels.

One of those doors that you have to open with gears has the cheese. I can't remember which one but one of them has it and a deepstalker in there.

Where is the nug cave? Which of the six levels? 

 

To get the cheese, you have to do the operation of building the bridge right on the floor where you burned the Legion of the Dead bodies. After that it will be in a room at the end of the path to the right if you stand on the ledge facing the open cavern.

Nug cave is on the 4th level (Forgotten Caverns) right in the middle of the map.
To get there, go to the travel node for 5th level (Bastion of the Pure) and stick to the left; follow the path upward and it will put you back on the Forgotten Caverns map.
You will reach a crevice, and there is a stone marker on the left. Interact with the stone, then jump over it, sort of hugging the left wall as you do. (I died here, but I resurrected right back on top of the marker, so maybe you're supposed to die a little?) A nice, sturdy bridge will now be in place and leads you to the nug cave.

You actually just have to read the stone and walk into the abyss. If you jump, the bridge will not appear. If you read the stone earlier and left without spawning the bridge, you have to read it again.

Yeah you read the stone, and then just walk into the "nothing", and a bridge will appear.
No jump.

It's not a door to open with gears. It's an expedition you complete that when you fast travel to the "Ruins of Heidrun Thaig" you'll go down the wood bridge to the right, then left after hitting the other side.
