Actually they probably have fewer periods, especially the poor. Starvation and the costant struggle for survival (therefore lots of stress) would cause them to miss periods or make them very light. Also there doesn't seem to be any contraception or an alternative to breastfeeding, so women probably had a lot more children (many of which didn't survive) and were caught in a pregnancy-breastfeeding-another pregnancy cycle for most of their reproductive years.

Noble women who are well-fed and not pregnant/breastfeeding would probably toss their blood-stained cloths in the hamper for the servants to wash and forget about it. The servants would proably be fine with it, compared to the more grisly things they have to endure. (Didn't Sera say some nobles also have "wipers"? That seems worse to me.)

Then for quizzy and her female companions, I imagine they quietly head to the nearby river/lake/oasis when they need to, while everyone else avoids the direction they're headed, and pretends they didn't see them walking away.

You can't compare hygiene standards of a world based on medieval theme with the standards of current modern culture. If you do, you will be disappointed. They were smelly dirty people back then... (that's why perfumes were created after all)

But hey, since the game doesn't state anything about this issue (except some party banter with Vivienne), you can imagine they have some hot springs on Skyhold. ;)

Stop! Not in my medieval ages. People were nastier in the so-called "Reinassance", and in fact parfumes in Europe are a modern era invention.

The more you know...

I also wonder if Thedas has STD/STI's cause I know for sure that my Warden and Hawke spent a lot of time at brothels (cause it entertained me)
Also, pirates sound unhygienic- I wonder if Isabella is clean... that was partly why I decided on Merrill in DA2 tbh, :/

oh! and yess Dental hygiene bothers me as well, cause I can just imagine Cullen leaning in to kiss my Quizzie and my quizzie passing out from the noxious fumes emitting from his mouth D:

Sometimes Isabela would ask Hawke things like if she smelled or if she should take a bath. It was also heavily implied that she did get STDs which Anders healed.

In one of Josephine's early Skyhold conversations, the paraphrase is "Such as a week's worth of bathing." That implies that people bathe more often than once a week.

This isn't strange at all, really. Poor hygiene wasn't as omnipresent in the Middle Ages as people think, and many ancient societies were actually exceedingly clean, particularly the higher classes. Some monarchs in Mesoamerica would never wear the same clothing twice.

Seriously? You think they'd be icking out over a bit of period blood when they essentially spend most of their time stabbing, shooting, slashing, burning people to death. Hah, I imagine my character would hardly care about blood on her underwear while she's got bits of innards covering her clothes. My Quizzy = Badass Mofo.

There's a vast difference between getting blood on your clothes and having it leak out of your body though! It's uncomfortable to walk around with your bits soaked all the time without reprieve. It's like peeing yourself and walking around the entire day with wet underwear that never dries. At least with pads and tampons you feel dry down there, but the quizzie doesn't get those, only cloth? I mean, with someone else's blood getting on you, it dries, but when it's your own and constantly flowing? what an inconvenience.

alright, alright. It's called absorbent leather straps, ladies, since we're still on feminine hygiene. washable, water/blood absorbent (though would need replacing every couple of days of course), can even be somewhat supple or soft. It really is possible, and a lot of fantasy books I have read set in medieval type fantasy worlds that actually mentioned the subject used this method.

I have a really hard time believing that a fantasy world with herbs and potions that can heal wounds, make taking a fireball to the face survivable, and send one's consciousness into the Fade does not also have both contraceptive and anti-period mixtures.

Fade water is kinda nasty though, it's all blackish green D:

The Fade is shaped by your thoughts.

Just think you're clean and there you go, smelling like roses.

I actually wondered it a bit, but there's bathtubs you can see in Skyhold. Honestly they are in weird places, so bathing would happen. I highly doubt they bathe while running around the wilderness fighting etc, but would likely enjoy a long soak back at Skyhold. But as others said, it has to be compared to a different time and place, imagine more Roman Empire period of time since the Imperium did build aqueducts and bath houses etc. No proper running water but water is available for that stuff.

Alright, but what about the party camp in DAO?

wait so it's a piece of leather you put between your thighs? i've never heard of them before xD

Sounds interesting!

ooh anti-period mixtures would be wonderful tbh, one that doesn't mess up your insides or causes infertility.

But what do they use for toilet paper? All I remember is Blackwall saying he found one of Varric's books in a privy once, with a few pages missing...

Seriously, though, leaves? Their hand? Eewwwww.

Necromancer! :P

This is a world (like many others) where time doesn't matter (though sequence does), day doesn't turn to night, night doesn't turn to day, the seasons don't change as months pass, eating is more a passing allusion than a necessity, doing #1, #2, or a comination thereof is not a game mechanic... And somehow people are going to have use of such a silly thing as toilet paper and deodorant? Pfft. You IRLer, you.

I just assumed the mages in the group will clean everyone with magic as part of a daily ritual.

I think Wynne mentioned a spell to get Dog clean in DA:O. She also wanted to give him antlers.

That's what people used to do. And continue to do in many parts of the world.

Pffff, just because we don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't happen! Gameplay and story segregation! :P

Noooope, I'm way too much of a weenie for that.

That's funny about Roman toilets though. I wonder if Tevinter uses the sponge-on-a-stick method? My brain quails at the thought.

There should be bathing scenes like those from Quantic Dream's games (Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls). Nose bleeds.

Imagine bathing....  :P

I've never played those games, but if the reality is anything like what I'm thinking, I can totally get behind this.  :D

Yep :D http://dragonage.wik...ry:_Witherstalk

Anyway, the answer is simple :D

All the people who wish to bathe luxuriously must travel to the Winter Palace :P

All the others make do with whatever water they find: rivers, sea, etc. If I don't recall wrong there is a well with a bucket somewhere in Skyhold, no? I'm sure they just get the water in a bucket and go somewhere in a corner where no one can see and throw it on theirselves :P
