... I have to say, I've always been intimidated to try the themed challenges in Prestacious' thread, so I wonder if newbies would feel the same if they thought doing themes is mandatory to participate? I thought about what would entice me to try MP if I were a newbie and I came up with:
1) Fun/Intro -- do whatever in a supportive, safe environment
2) New experiences/tourism -- get locked in the reactor, see collectors, find the easter eggs on Vancouver, play as a nonhuman, etc.
3) Upping my game/weapon workshop -- get advice from experienced players on how to play certain weapons/kits, get to play with BSNers, try a higher level of difficulty
4) Themes/challenges -- get that sense of accomplishment
5) Geek out -- discuss lore with other fans
What do you think?
IMHO strictly, the SP only people are shy to try mutiplayer because they don't feel confident in how they will do it in real time without an ability to pause. Some may be older, some just don't like combat at all, and most of them don't have any real time multiplayer experience or have really bad abusive experience. Some secretly tried and some wanted to play gold or platinum right off the start and got kicked or died and that might have been great discouragement for them. Others might have just plain bad internet connection. So, something inspirational can be added to the list as well. Inspiration is different for different people. What worked for me might not work for the others. But there are some ... things here on the forum that are universal. I'm talking mostly with regard to those who have strong doubt about their real time abilities and who are new to rather unforgiving game play. Well, this one is outstanding http://forum.bioware...n-accomplished/and still makes me shiver. I'd say number 3 on the list is the most appealing but carrying should be done carefully. IMO, let them die a couple of times and let them kill a few enemies themselves to have a real feel. Just running and nuking spawns might give a wrong impression.
On the other hand, any fan of ME must try playing as krogan, drell, asari, vorcha, geth, turian, collector, EDI, volus or quarian (essentially number 2). It is unique experience available only in multiplayer and the most attractive part of it. They do have to unlock these characters first and it might need to put some hours in the game to get going. So, I'd say number 3 is still a mandatory part.
I'm sort of impartial about themes/challenges (number 4) and IMHO, number 1 might be somewhat redundant for some as there is more freedom to enjoy scenery in single player.
Also, but only for PC, there is modding and me3tweaks, and this is huge. Some SP people might like it a lot. I'm talking mostly about different types of game play. For example, typical horde unmodded setup might be not very attractive for some people. But they might like grenade capacity, low gravity, or zombie mods, or some other mods out there.
