So, those who have played it already will have noticed by now that alongside the big reveal about the Titans, The Descent also contains lore about another mystery of Thedas. Beneath the Deep Roads, you find an account of a conflict between the dwarves and a bunch of interlopers who attacked them. We know this happened a long, long time ago - probably before the First Blight - because the account refers to the battle happening north of Cad'Halash. This is the description of the aggressors:

"In the flame's light, we saw a man's body like those of the Imperium humans, but covered in scales. It wore armor and even had a dagger hanging from its hip."

While they're basically humanoid and use tools and weapons, the attackers also have talons and use their teeth in battle. They sound a lot like the images found in the Emerald Graves. From this Codex entry, we also learn that they used magic, including blood magic.

So, Thedas seems to have lizard people, or at least had them in the past! The way I see it, there are four broad possibilities:

1. They're the Kossith. The qunari we know have actually become less like lizards through some kind of breeding/magical intervention. Or the qunari were never the same people as the Kossith at all. (Or the qunari are a combination of Kossith and elf?)

2. They're the Fex. Maybe they've fallen on hard times since the Qunari arrived in Par Vollen and that's why we haven't seen them wandering around the south of Thedas biting people's heads off.

3. They're some unknown sixth sapient race, unconnected to the four we know about and the fifth we've vaguely heard of. If so, they're probably related to the dragons instead.

4. They're not a separate race at all,  this is just what happens to Reavers when they drink waaaaaaaaaaaay too much dragon's blood. Given the timing and the ritual that's described, maybe they're an ancient Tevinter cult of some kind.

This would be the second time we've see hints about the Serpent Men, so it looks like they exists after all.

Forgive my ignorance but what were some of the other instances, I might have overlooked them and this is an interesting topic to me?

In addition to the images in the Emerald Graves (sorry, I don't have a screen cap, can someone else post one?) there's a reference to the Snake Kings of the Earth in one of the Mysteries of the Frostback Basin Codex entries. Of course, the author is a crazy conspiracy theorist who thinks that Orlais are in league with the Snake Kings to counter the Tevinter Alliance with the Moon Men. I would take whatever he says with a barrel of salt.

Until today I was willing to dismiss the Emerald Graves images as mythology or art, but given that there's a whole quest devoted to collecting these codex entries in The Descent I'm inclined to take them seriously.

I thought these creatures were Hurlocks, and these were the first meeting with the dwarfs prior to the first Blight.

Hurlocks aren't covered in scales, and the description of their behaviour doesn't sound like any darkspawn we've ever seen or heard of.

Maybe they're wereserpents, like you said with the reavers. Perhaps it is an ability.

Just remember the phrase "ka nama kaa lajerama" and we'll root out these serpent men.

Looks like a certain developer can use another developers model to make this happen! Just look at those stems! (cough* Quarian/Salarian cough*)

If the Inquisitor becomes a Reaver, Cassandra warns him/her saying that her family (and/or Nevarra in general) were renowned dragon hunters and many of them drank dragon blood to better hunt them, drinking more and more until they became enraged and grew "growths, scales, things of that nature".

In all honesty though, I think they're the kossith. We don't have much to go on, but if they're going to introduce a new humanoid race it's going to be them We're also getting other hints about them, and them and the qunari seem to have a connection to dragons, so the scales fit pretty well. They sound scary :?

Who the heck are the moon men?

So on top of Kossith and Fex we have Snake kings and Moon men? unless the fex are one of the two and kossith are related to qunari thats 2-3 possible new races! hope we see at least one of them soon. Id rather get the fex and kossith reveal out the way since they were first no need to keep stacking mysterious races.

Mythal is said to have created the Moon for the Sun. Might be Elvhen-related?

I seem to have no recollection of the fex. When were then mentioned, and what do we know about them?

Tevinter stealing acquiring Elvhen magic might be why they met the moon men.  Goodness knows why the Orlesians are allegedly allied with the snakes.

Perhaps it's simply a case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"

All we know is they in Par Vollen with the Qunari and have assimilated to the Qunari Culture. At least that is what The Par Vollen wiki states.

Serpent men?

Obviously the children of the great old Yig are returning to rebuild their lost kingdom of Valusia.

Not on my watch, "Ka nama kaa lajerama." is going to become the new handshake for the inquisition.

Checkmate snake people.

Ah, right. I always assumed they were humans, and their culture/location name was simply "Fex". I could be wrong, but I don't want them to introduce too many different races, especially with the kossith most likely on the way.

For now , I wouldn't think too much about the fex.

I think it was David Gaider who just said Fex during an interview or convention , maybe before or after DA2 ...and they were supposed to live in Par Vollen.

Thing is it's been a couple of years now , and we heard nothing about the Fex since.

It's possible the entire idea was dropped at one point.

The "secret war" between the moon men who sided with Tevinter and the Orlesians siding with Snake Men sound like such a farfetched conspiracy theory.

But it might it might be the case.
