The "secret war" between the moon men who sided with Tevinter and the Orlesians siding with Snake Men sound like such a farfetched conspiracy theory.

But it might it might be the case.

I would not be surprised if it was a Easter egg for grey aliens and reptilians aliens so i would not hold my hopes to high but I do hope it is legit.

I kinda assumed it was supposed to be lampooning conspiracy theories, much like the Starmetal thing in DAO was about Superman (or maybe a Moon man!? the Plot thickens...).

So, those who have played it already will have noticed by now that alongside the big reveal about the Titans, The Descent also contains lore about another mystery of Thedas. Beneath the Deep Roads, you find an account of a conflict between the dwarves and a bunch of interlopers who attacked them. We know this happened a long, long time ago - probably before the First Blight - because the account refers to the battle happening north of Cad'Halash. This is the description of the aggressors:

"In the flame's light, we saw a man's body like those of the Imperium humans, but covered in scales. It wore armor and even had a dagger hanging from its hip."

While they're basically humanoid and use tools and weapons, the attackers also have talons and use their teeth in battle. They sound a lot like the images found in the Emerald Graves. From this Codex entry, we also learn that they used magic, including blood magic.

So, Thedas seems to have lizard people, or at least had them in the past! The way I see it, there are four broad possibilities:

1. They're the Kossith. The qunari we know have actually become less like lizards through some kind of breeding/magical intervention. Or the qunari were never the same people as the Kossith at all. (Or the qunari are a combination of Kossith and elf?)

2. They're the Fex. Maybe they've fallen on hard times since the Qunari arrived in Par Vollen and that's why we haven't seen them wandering around the south of Thedas biting people's heads off.

3. They're some unknown sixth sapient race, unconnected to the four we know about and the fifth we've vaguely heard of. If so, they're probably related to the dragons instead.

4. They're not a separate race at all, this is just what happens to Reavers when they drink waaaaaaaaaaaay too much dragon's blood. Given the timing and the ritual that's described, maybe they're an ancient Tevinter cult of some kind.

What was written in the codex regarding their magic use?

The moon men could be referring to followers of Andruil, the goddess of the moon...or is it Sylaise? One of them is the goddess of the moon.

The dwarves come across them performing a blood magic ritual:

"The Scaled Ones had set up camp at an intersection in the Deep Roads. In the center was a golden altar fashioned in the shape of fire. A chill swept through me. On the tip of each flame hung the corpses of those we'd lost - including father and Drohg. They'd been drained of blood, leaving only bone wrapped in thin grey skin. A robed Scaled One stood before the altar. Its voice was different from the others: softer, almost feminine. It chanted and raised a basin of blood toward the altar. The other Scaled Ones bowed low. The robed Scaled One produced fire from its palm and mouth and ignited the blood."

That entry definitely reminds me of qunari. Especially with the fire added, which was the qunari birthright according to one of the comics IIRC. Early ancestors of the qunari, definitely.

Just superstition I say

Probably just some wild tribemen wearing Gurgut or Wyvren hides as armor with intact skulls as hoods.

Nothing new here

It sounded that way in JoH, but the Descent codexes seem more serious.  I've wondered if the elves may not have originated on Thedas, but came from elsewhere via eluvian, maybe even from some other dimension.  The eluvians can connect to other worlds, according to Morrigan. The eluvian paths described in Masked Empire were suited specifically for elves, but made humans sick, as much as being in an alien environment.  The ancient elven god portraits are kinda similar to the typical grey alien in features (probably just a stylistic exaggeration of elven big eyes), that accentuates their otherworldlyness.  So the ancient elves being the "Moon Men", is a possibility.  But so far I don't think there's been much to point towards the elves having warred with reptilians; the Titans, sure (elven statues holding giant decapitated heads kinda makes more sense now), but if the scaled ones exist, they've really been under the radar.

hmmm i wonder if these guys are the kossith and are responsible for the creation of the qunari or even the blight?

I kinda assumed it was a bunch of reavers who deiced to drink waaaay to much dragon blood and so grew scales and things. But lizard people could be true to?

I don't recall an association with them, but according to Dalish legend, Mythal created the moon.  It was after Elgar'nan defeated and then restored the Sun.

They are either proto-Kossith / Kossith or they are the ancestors of Salarians who decided to use the Eluvian to migrate to the Mass Effect universe.

All the theories in this thread... lizard people, living rocks, alternate dimensions... This is starting to sound like the "plot" to the Super Mario Bros. Movie.

SMBMovie-Goombas.jpg

But seriously, I think the depictions in the Emerald Graves are probably an exageration of how these lizard people looked. They are probably the result of Tevinter experiments. Some of the first true reavers perhaps.

Hmm good theory, perhaps some links after all hints are about that the race has corrupted blood and the old god child even says sorry about what happen to your people basically if the IQ is one of them

"Hear me, sons and daughters of the People--
I am Sister of the Moon, Mother of Hares,
Lady of the Hunt: Andruil.
Remember the Ways of the Hunter
And I shall be with you."

—From Codex entry: Andruil: Goddess of the Hunt

So I guess it is Sylaise.

Maybe, or it could be referring to how Andruil's the daughter of Mythal, who also made the Moon.  Sylaise seems to be more fire in symbolism.

Reminds me of the Lizard People of NWN...

However I think we have already so many plots waiting to be solved (Elven Gods, Old Gods, Darkspawn and the Calling, Qunari and Kossith... and now Titans and Lyrium)... so I don't think we'll se these Lizars very soon, even if they exist...

If these Serpent men are just heavily mutated Reavers (or, more likely their descendants) then the question becomes.....where did they get all that dragon blood. Perhaps there was an Eighth Old God, perhaps struck from the records of Old Tevinter or struck down long before the first priests could contact them.

There's a warden who came across a pile of dead bodies: different beasts and darkspawn in a pit while she was on her calling. Then we see something similar in The Descent that had a beheaded statue of Mythal, Tevinter Artifacts, etc.

The quest talking about a sigil that surrounds a thaig. I wonder if it's the work of these Lizard Men? Or just a magister?

But, blood regenerates.

Interesting stuff. I like the theories but I think they're a seperate race of intelligent beings descended from Dragons. However the theories on them being Kossith, reavers gone mad or Tevinter experiments gone wrong really interest me.

It adds another element to the mysteriousness of the deep roads. The deep roads and the fade are personally my favourite areas within the games because it's basically the unknown.

I think it was said (cassandra or someone else) that during the peak of Dragon Hunting, hunters would drink dragon blood .. thus gaining reaver abilities. Side effect included but not limited to: short temperedness, uncontrollable rage, growing of scales.

Perhaps the Primeval Thaig might've been a previous "Lizard People" settlement prior to being invaded/massacred by the Dwarves? Then again "Claws of Dumat" can be seen in the Primeval Thaig and ALSO in The Descent

Screenshot20110325072723406.jpg

These look like dragons if you ask me.

Now that the conspiracy might be a thing ... perhaps it was one of the Lizard People that whispered to Corypheus to enter the Black City? Seem as if Lizard people hated the Tevinters and since they live underground they may have locked up their Old Gods. When the Old Gods stopped talking to Cory and crew Cory heard a voice telling him to go there. It has always been speculated that it was not Dumat, but something/one else.

Only thing I can think of is the Lizard Men.
