I liked the boss fight, and thought it was sufficiently challenging.  I was at max level and fully geared and I still had to stay on my toes to keep everyone alive.

My dual wielding rogue got taken out quickly (yes, I know now to keep away from the tentacles) and I wasn't paying enough attention to where Dorian and Varric were standing so they were unconscious by the time the Guardian was down to half health. Luckily, like pretty much everything else in the game, it was unable to seriously threaten Blackwall so he just hacked away at it until it died. Not the most exciting way to win the fight, but I'll use some actual tactics next time.

(This is also how I took out the Storm Coast dragon and the Red Lyirum Dragon the first time I fought them. Blackwall does not do a lot of DPS the way I build him, but boy, he is tough.)

My first run through The Descent was as a dual-wielding dwarf with Cassandra, Iron Bull & Dorian. My second trip was as a two-handed dwarf with Blackwall, Varric & Dorian.

Dorian is the master of that final boss, but Blackwall mopped the floor with that Emissary Alpha!

I started the dlc with my lvl 26 archer, whole game on nightmare ofc, the boss was easy. to tell the truth i was very disappointed with this dlc. i knew it was developed by another BW team but this....worst DA  dlc ever:-( no side quests, only fighting wave after wave of darkspawns over and over again, collecting all kind of crap without any reward and if i wanted doing it i was running all over the dungeon like an xxxxxx

It really depends on the gear and level the party has. I play on NM without friendly fire (just unfun) and focus abilities. With my maxed out DW rogue Inqui, Twohander Cassandra, Blackwall S&S and Dorian Necro&Storm the DLC was beyond easy. The aplha Emissary died before he could barrier up. The Titan Watcher got stomped too.

But every of my team member has insane stats. My Rogue has 280% crit damage by 100% crit chance on flanking. That are 1,6-1,8k auto hits, 5k per tick of hidden blades, 30k for deathblow and up to 70k for mark of death.

With another, not maxed out team it was a lot harder.

I must be doing something wrong because I was getting my trash kicked by the guardian, even though I bumped the difficulty down to casual (been playing DAI on hard with my current character but bumped down to casual when playing this DLC).  It was late last night when I was fighting the guardian but I will try again today.

You need to use an Archer and dogde his punch attack and AOE attack, ignore everyone else unless you get an opening to revive them do so and only attack the heart, the rift ability helps too.

The best (not) part about that end battle is the Inquisitor shouting for everyone to keep moving when those AoE attacks take place... and everyone BUT me stands still and dies. Good job, AI!

Everyone getting clobbered by the flailing arms was fun too. I figure, great! I'll give Cole a bow, and I have Solas with me so we'll sacrifice Cassandra and just hit the thing from a distance. No, Solas. No, stop running up to the thing! Cole? You've got a bow, stand back and shoot! COLE!

*sigh*

So ultimately I killed the damn thing using Thousand Cuts and just kept moving while I shot the Lyrium Cluster. It fell and it fell hard and fast, but I was more frustrated with my companions and the crap AI than I was with killing the boss. <_<

So I haven't played the dlc yet but with the way everyone is talking about the boss it sounds like the lavos core from chronic trigger just a whole lot less epic

It was indeed easy (played on NM). I just charged in with my KE, and quickly discovered the little tentacles thingies could take my barrier away faster then I could build it... (nowhere near as horrible as the blasted hakkon dagger rogues lol) Still it was slower then the dwarf bolters (the upgraded rift aegis thingy does wonders for them though  ^_^ ) and i just had to recast barrier a few times... even move occasionally... pfff. As for targeting I just hacked away at the heart mainly.

What I find weird is that I never get to see any aoe attacks  Either I killed it too fast, or it aoed my team... and I don't pay much attention to them lol.

For all of u here who have completed this dlc, should I do it (lore-wise) before or after the main events?

I did the boss battle with a warrior with FT silverite armor, level 24. He lost some of his guard during the battle, but that was about it. I wasn't paying attention to where Dorian and Varric were standing, though, so they got KO'ed. Blackwall and the Inquisitor were fine.

Dual-wield rogue, Bull and Varric all fell over almost instantly. Remainder of the fight was Dorian with Walking Bomb, fade step to move out of danger as appropriate, barrier as appropriate, staff of razithingie to slip into fade cloak (or use fade cloak if you have it).

Walking bomb to the lyrium nodes was the only thing doing damage - it just died within a couple of minutes. I was somewhat surprised!

I thought it made sense to do after you get to Skyhold and secure an alliance with the templars or mages. They both need lyrium and the trouble in the Deep Roads needs to be dealed with to restore the flow of lyrium to the Inquisition.

It was essentially the Dragon Age 2 Legacy ending all over again, except for a easier boss fight.

At least cory had different stages, this thing I could pretty much just whirlwind to death.

Really, because during the Cory fight, I was thinking I needed to reload and raise the difficulty, only to find that I was already on Nightmare, no where else to go.

The first time in, it was a bit rough, not hard, and I didn't have to reload, but Cassandra was the only one left. The second save through, I only lost Sera, because she kept using Leaping Shot right out of barrier casting, so she'd miss out. I expect that my Rift Mage might be a little fun, no barrier crutch.

ya much like the rest of the dlc, just stand there with vivi and spam chain lightning/arcane barrage/static cage, with the occasional fade cloak. (rest of my party is blackwall/my 2h champion who basically both have max guard at all times, and sera/varric, playing on nightmare without friendly fire). destroyed the first thing in front of me which was a tentacle, then the next thing was a lyrium node, so i just afk attacked it till it died, which really surprised me cause i was expecting to have to destroy all of them, or for there to be more phases or well.. anything. remember the ancient rock wraith from 2? now that was a good fcking boss

When I played it as a Rogue, it was challenging, when I played it as a mage, it was easier. When i played it as a Warrior, it was really easy, getting guard is easy with so many tentacles and barrier stacks with it. The Dual-wielder was really difficult, I had to use equippable potions.

Ok, I can't seem to beat this boss...period. My IQ is a sword/shield Templar and I've tried numerous party combinations. I can't do enough damage to the arms in order to get to the lyrium bunches in the center. By the time I finish off a 2nd set of arms, the 1st is back up. I've tried the suggestions of using an archer to keep moving but again, not enough damage.

Folks mentioned concentrating on the heart instead, but I can't target the heart at all. It won't even come up in tactical cam with the controller. I tried switching to the keyboard and that was quite useless.

This is the most trouble I've had out of any boss in any Dragon Age game...period. Any suggestions?

Boss was a joke. It's huge and it's even kind enough to set up the perfect leaping shot spam wall for you.
