Are they important and if so is there a class guide for what you should have equipped and what you should be giving to companions before/after specializations

There aren't any guides about the best pre-Skyhold accessories because the best ones are in areas you can't access at that part of the game. There are some exceptions but they require a lot of busy work. You can get get a Superb Amulet of Willpower from the "Celebrate the Dragonslaying" war table operation if you kill the Ferelden Frostback, and you can loot one of the 3 Superb Belts of Fire/Ice/Spirit Resistance from the Solasan Temple if you have enough shards.
Your best rings pre-Skyhold will be ability rings that improve the key skills your party uses such as Barrier, War Cry, etc. These are luck based finds so listing them as options isn't practical but nothing is stopping you from farming rifts and hoping these drop if you know how.

Yeah, and this issue extends towards advice for doing no crafting runs. I thought about making a thread about suggestions and tips for where to find decent gear and equipment for a no crafting run, but haven't yet. There is a lot of RNG involved in getting decent drops of loot, even putting aside knowing which areas have better chests than others.
I usually don't try to farm equipment, nor do I really know the best place to try and get those accessories to drop early game. But there is a vendor in Val Royeaux that sells common equipment (Barnabus). Sometimes I get a ring of lifedrain for each member of the core squad. Really though, the common accessories have such small bonuses it is hard to notice them. Like a whole 2% extra critical chance. Stacking two on a rogue gives a whole 4%... not particularly great.

Absent definitive guidance, this is better than nothing. This is GhoXen's crafting ranking, which can be stretched to apply to deciding between, for example, a +2% Attack ring vs. +2% Crit Chance ring for a warrior. Take note of the assumptions and take note that this ranking is normalized to a unit of crafting material, which does not apply for Accessories, which tend to have a flat percentage per unit. YMMV.
Assumptions:
- Weapon damage 150; enemy armor 50. Existing stats: 10% Attack, 0% AP, 40% Crit Dmg Bonus, 25% Flanking Dmg, 10% Crit Chance.
- A well-balanced party, with removals dedicated to Guard (Shield Bash, War Horn, etc.) and Barriers (Dispel).
- Ranking is for a pure DPS character. Not a tank/support who may want Stagger % to allow the party easy combos, or crit % to trigger party-wide effects.
-
Willpower's auxiliary effect of magic defense is considered, since it's simply too vital on harder difficulties for all characters.
-
The ranking applies to only very general situations. For specific party composition, enemies, locations, etc. It would be best to use the damage calculator (listed above) for more precise min-maxing.
-
Flanking damage % is best stat If a DPS in a flanking position. Otherwise it's worthless.
Crafting Priority:
3% Flanking Dmg > 1.75% Attack > 3% Armor Pen > 1.75% Crit Chance = 1.75 Dexterity (rogue) >1.75 Willpower > 1.75 Magic (mage) = 1.75 Strength (warrior) > > 1.75 Cunning > 3% Crit Dmg > 3% Barrier Dmg > 3% Guard Dmg

So, according to that, the +2% Attack ring would be better to wield than the +2% Crit Chance ring, if you only had one choice and all else being equal.
BUT, the values are so small for all the low level common stuff, most decisions are in the noise. It kind of doesn't matter. Just don't double up on the blue skill enhancement rings, I've read that they don't stack, and some don't even work, apparently.
