To be consistent with the lore though:

Drell babies eat solid food immediately after birth, so no breast feeding (at least that seems to be the reason it was mentioned in the codex). If the female drell have breasts what function do they serve? Maybe those are humps for storing water since they evolved in the desert where resources are scarce (thus the eidetic memory).  But then why don't the males have them? Why are they identical in shape, position, and size to human females?  I don't think Chris L'Etoile (who was very concerned with the science) would have had the females designed with breasts. In fact the drell may have been designed too human already, thus the alien morality and psychology.

Kinda off topic a bit, but does anyone know if Chris L'Etoile was in charge of writing the aliens in ME 1. I know that he was behind Legion and the Geth, but I never could find in what capacity he wrote things in the first game.

I know he was behind the drell culture, religion, psychology, behavior, etc. I think he tried to make them more alien (psychologically) since the male anatomical design was for the hetero/bi female fanbase originally (if they had kept him bisexual i'd say bi/gay male fanbase as well), to be the sexy counterpart to the asari.

As to Chris's writing (from is Linkedin profile):

RPG Writer/Designer

General Duties
• Developed and maintained the technical background of the Mass Effect IP. Served as go-to person for continuity and "technobabble" rationalization across multiple teams and titles.

Mass Effect 2
• Story planning and dialogue: party character Thane Krios
• Story planning and dialogue: party character Legion
Story planning and dialogue: location Citadel Zakera Ward
• Dialogue: character EDI
• Led multidisciplinary teams designing the Recruitment and Loyalty mission levels for Thane Krios and Legion.
• Developed mission level concepts and wrote first draft dialogue for party members Miranda Lawson, Tali’Zorah vas Neema, and Jacob Taylor.

Mass Effect: Bring Down the Sky (DLC)
• Dialogue: Simon Atwell
• PC Tutorial Codex entries

Mass Effect 1
• Story planning and dialogue: planet Noveria
• Story planning and dialogue: planet Therum
• Story planning and dialogue: planet Caleston (cut from final game; ~50k words of dialogue)
• Dialogue: Gunnery Chief Ashley Williams
• Wrote all in-game Codex entries.
• Rewrote procedural planet descriptions and edited Galaxy Map layout on personal initiative to improve quality and scientific accuracy.
• Produced lore-related marketing materials for BioWare's website and game news network sites.

He left BioWare in 2008, presumably because he did not like where one the lead writers (who shall remain nameless) was taking the series. He would later comment on the contentious relationship he had with this particular lead writer over Legion's design and backstory (his wanting to avoid the humanization of the geth) and the purpose of the dialogue "there was a hole", "no data available".

Yeah I was partially aware of some of this turn of events, and it's pretty much a perfect analogy to my issue with BioWare's titles as a series moves on:

You start with this really creative and believable universe, but then slowly the human and 'rule of cool' elements move in and force out all the diverse 'other' elements in the series until you are left with Pinocchio tropes and space ninjas.  <_<

I'm pretty vocal about the importance of the human perspective. I am particularly adamant about having a human protagonist. But even I will grant that interesting aliens are fundamental for the setting of a good space opera.

Hopefully they'll take the soft reboot that is MEA as a chance to work on that. They're bound to, since the trip to Andromeda is pretty much guaranteed to be a multi-species endeavor and we should meet some funky new aliens in this brand new galaxy.

It was a real let down that the first female Salarian and Krogan were nothing more than males in a blanket.

Not every species has to be gender dimorphic. Sure it would becool hell maybe the female Drellhgave horns.

Agreed. And hopefully the species that make the trip will include the more distinct aliens like the Rachni, Hanar, and Elcor; as well the aliens we get in Andromeda are more than re-skinned 'Not-Quarians' or 'Not-Drell'.

With fiction, it's nice. Especially if these species play a huge role. Otherwise, what's the point of introducing a male or female? Hell, why bother making Grunt and Wrex look as different as they do?

It really boils down to Bioware not being arsed to do it. That's it.

As much as I would like this and to also have the drell return  , my gut tells me that...

Batarians

Drell

Elcor

Geth

Hanar

Rachni

& Vorcha

...will not make it to Andromeda. Some ark, huh?

And I think this will be due to resource limitations, or that will be the explanation to angry fans.

I think those aliens that will make it are...

Asari

Humans

Krogans

Quarians

Salarians

Turians

&Volus (build a stable economy)

...and not only because of popularity, but they had importance and presence in the trilogy (geth were important too but would be considered too alien/hostile). I hope I am wrong though about the drell, but there were only 3 of them in the whole trilogy and zero in ME3 if you did not recruit or keep Thane alive in ME2 and also did not do the LotSB dlc!

There was quite big lack of female aliens in ME1-3 compared to male aliens. Of course there is monogendered alien race Asari, but still we weren't able to see any or saw just one or two female Turians (2 in DLC's), Krogans (one? in ME3), Salarians (was or was not there one councillor?), Voluses (do they exist?), Drells (Thane's wife is only mentioned one), Elchor (unless genders look same and have both low voices), Batarians and Vorcha. There was lore explanation for Krogan (they all live in remote places in Tuchanka) and Salarians (there is 1/10 ratio of female/male Salarians), but lack of females of other races didn't make sense really.

Only alien species whose females we saw in the game were Asari (naturally) and Quarians. And Rachni if someone wants to count them. That's only two to three alien races out of 10+ races of the whole game series.

I'm sincerely hoping that Bioware has learned how to model female aliens and animate them so we will see more female aliens in the ME:A. Otherwise I must conclude that all these alien races are sadly going to go extinct very soon.

This thread is continuation for discussion from here: http://forum.bioware...n-women-please/
, hopefully giving it more on-topic place. And the thread title is reference that some users might catch ;)

Yes that needs to change in the next game. There is literally no excuse for female aliens to get left out for the 4th straight game. Hopefully we get a female Turian and krogan in ME:A since they were screwed over so bad in the original trilogy. Also would like to see drell and Batarian females. Also they all should have their own unique models, and not just recycled male models with robes on!

It will be interesting to see what they do without the excuse of 'old gen consoles holding them back'. Panda is going to yell at me for that, so let me explain. In previous games, Bioware claimed that they couldn't have so many different models on the screen at one time ( although other game companies seemed to manage just fine). Now that they are working with solely more powerful processors, they should, in theory, be able to be more diverse in their modelling.

Male and female Krogan should have the same general body shape. Maybe their head crests would be different. it wouldn't be that hard to do, they had Grunt look different after all.

Unfortunately the 'rule of cool' states that they must fit each character into a role they envisioned, hence the 'iconic look' and Thane looking attractive to humans, since he was an LI,

When you think of a pirate or terrorist, do you think of a female? Most batarians we meet are either terrorists or pirates.

I personally would include the Vorcha...it's logical from the standpoint of needing a labor force capable of adapting to varying harsh conditions.  Storywise it could raise the issue of social stratification and the conflict that inevitably ensues when members desire to move beyond the role they were "born" to fill.

The Rachni would fill that role far better than the Vorcha though. They are natural engineers, quick breeding, highly disciplined, and able to survive extremely harsh environments.

Yes. Shock. Horror.

That isn't what invalidates the question tho, what invalidates the question is expecting aliens to conform to our gender stereotypes.

I agree with you though ^^; I find that just as excuse and it's funny how limitations were only in present with female's of the species.

Yes. Duh.

Most human guys experience females as rather more terrifying than either of those.
