After years of faithful service, during the first wave of Dagger/Collectors with Mrs. Fluffy Cannibal-Nuggss, the red ring of death wrapped around my once beautiful green light. I miss you already. I would post a video of Taps played on bagpipes but I'm not sure how...and I'll probably buy another tomorrow.
I laughed. I mean, I really laughed.
Who is going to carry fluffy now!?!
PS. It's Fluffy's fault.
Yeah. I did what every good wife does and redecorated without talking to him first. I thought he'd prefer a white and red XBox to a white and green one.
Modern consoles are a waste of money, designed to milk cash from people who don't know any better.
£500 laptop (reduced from £750), can't play new games 3 years later.
£250 XBox, 7 years old, can play brand new games that the laptop can't.
Yes, if I'd bought a rig I could upgrade it without having to buy all new hardware, which I can't do with this laptop (and it would have been cheaper to begin with), and yes, PC may be a superior platform, but don't act like it's the cheap option because it really isn't.
If you bought a high end PC from 7 years ago it'd be that cheap. Your 20fps games aren't that great. Look at GTAV on last gen.
Also are you seriously comparing a laptop to a game console .
I could have bought a high end PC for £250?!
I'm comparing the prices. L2Read.
We'll assume you already have a monitor, mouse, and keyboard, elsewise you would not be posting here.
I didn't even go top of the line parts either, simply what looked reasonable on the first page of search results in each respective category. Grand total: $674.23. And this is assuming you start from scratch, rather than upgrading your existing PC that you post to BSN from, in which case it would be even cheaper. Additionally, individual parts can be upgraded at any time over the next 10 years, ensuring that your PC is always relevant, and reasonably up-to-date.
Pre-owned, Refurbished Playstation 4: $479.99 And there is probably something wrong with it. And it cannot be upgraded, you're stuck with the exact hardware spec for the next ten years. Unless they start releasing new consoles every 5 years, in which case you'll be buying so many consoles as to radically offset the cost of buying a PC.
If you don't have $194.24 to spend for a superior gaming platform, then you are a filthy casual.
ALSO: Enjoy your console subscription fee. Assuming a flat $50.00 per year subscription, that reduces the cost of the PC to +$144.24 the first year, +$94.24 the second year, +$44.24 the third year, and -$5.76 the fourth year, at which point it becomes cheaper to play on the PC.
ALSO: L2AIM. We won't even get into the costs of custom/third party controllers.
ALSO: Steam Summer Sales. The discounts you can get here will drastically decrease the costs of playing on the PC. No pre-owned discs full of scratches and soda pop, just straight up digital downloads that eliminate the production costs of producing physical copies.
ALSO: Ease of recording/uploading media, installing custom mods and skins, removing DLC so you get more Cyclonic IVs, etc.
ALSO: You can run a video cable from your PC to your HDTV and play from your couch. I might do that this winter.
I'm not saying you can't build a cheap PC. I'm saying that, over the course of it's life, a console which (potentially) won't need to be replaced for 6-7 years is going to be cheaper than a PC which will need upgrades every 2 years at the least if you want to continue playing new games. Therefore, console is the cheaper option.
Also, as I'm too much of a pedant to let it go, quadruple the RAM and for the love of GPUs buy that thing a fan ![]()

This is my case. Is the fan big enough? ![]()
Actually the red one of these is only $59.27, I'll amend the post to include one of these instead.
They also come in blue, but it's a few dollars more.

You made me click on the link. I will be spending the rest of the night looking at computer pr0n. I hope you fall into a pit full of unwashed krogan and trap your genitals in a thresher maw.
EDIT:
Out of interest, I looked up how much that PC would cost here, and it comes to £560.89. A brand new XBone will set you back £300.
OP figured out that Pacific Rim isn't an actual documentary?
The real point of consoles is that they make for a consistent single target platform. The games are guaranteed to run on them, even if not very well.
@Fluffy: did that price include kb+M? It's easy to spend more on those than the price of a console.
No, just the parts that SMR listed, no monitor, peripherals, or speakers. Stuff is expensive here.

You really don't need really heavy hardware for a gaming rig. I tend to aim around 600, to 800$

You don't need upgrades every 2 years. My current gaming computer is 3 years old and will likely last another 2 before I need an upgrade. Games are limited by consoles... as long as your computer outperforms those, you're golden. You only need new components if you want to play in 4k or something equally ridiculous.
PCs initially cost more than consoles. That's a fact. But from then on you save money with almost every game you purchase, you have far more control over the system and you can use it for more than just playing games. If you're an active gamer, then a computer will be more cost effective than any console after a year or two.
If something breaks (which is very rare if you don't buy extremely cheap parts) then you can exchange that part instead of getting a brand new machine.
Not to mention that you can mod your games, you have more storage space and you can easily record/screencap everything you do, if you're into that.
Oh... and if you are missing your collection of console games... PC's got emulators for that.

I liked this part. It made me laugh, genuinely. You are either the luckiest person I've ever encountered, or the most deluded. I don't mean that in a confrontational or offensive way, it's just that these days everything breaks: it's a required part of the capitalist business model.
I've probably spent £10000 (minimum) on PCs or laptops over 20 years, and considerably less than a tenth of that on Consoles. I have nothing but affection for my Consoles, and little but frustration and occasional downright hatred for my PCs, all of which have let me down catastrophically at the most inappropriate time possible. My Xbox 360 cost £95 and never interrupts what I'm doing to tell me there's an update available for something I didn't even know was installed on it, running silently in the background, slowing everything down. I just switch it or my PS3 on and play. You must surely see why that's an attractive proposition to some people. Besides, mustard disagrees with me. ![]()
