From what I can tell, there are a few different types of inner circle missions. I enjoy the ones that are a bit more story-based, like when I had to deal with Dorian's family troubles, or when Solas asked me to assist his "friend". Basically, the loyalty-style missions that have emotional resonance and consequences.

I'm not in love with the ones that seem to mostly be "go here and do this trivial thing", like destroying the red lyrium shards--you know, these quests that usually have locations in a lot of different zones and really just serve to waste your time running there. I honestly find most of the quests that don't involve cinematic elements to be a distraction from the best parts of Inquisition.

So my question is, am I going to miss anything if I just don't do those sorts of missions? Do I need to do them in order to unlock better missions with my inner circle? Anything like that?

They kind of serve a similar function to gifts in Origins, allowing you to increase approval with companions even if you decide to make decisions they disapprove of elsewhere in the game. They are especially welcome for the more doctrinaire personalities like Vivienne and Solas, who will strongly approve or strongly disapprove in opposite directions based on your decisions in the main quest.

So, I don't think you'll miss much, as long as you're keeping up everyone's approval through other means.

Even for these menial quests though, I can get into it. Finding priceless tomes for the Circle as a way of indicating to Vivienne that I appreciate the academic and research value of the Circle institution, despite being convinced that reforms need to be made (and thus having drawn her opprobrium)? That works for me, YMMV.

Edit: I forgot, some of them are actually tied to minor follow-up content. Solas has a war table mission and a short quest for his, IIRC.

Just about everything adds to the story.  Even if the quest itself seems to be "fetch based", it always has cinema screens at the end, and some that start one way evolve into something else.  Personally, with my method of playing, I couldn't live with knowingly skipping anything anyway, so I do it all.

That's a useful comparison. Thanks.

A little disappointing that there might be some nugget of character development tagged onto the end, though, since they generally take so long to do and (for me) are really tedious.
